Re: What is it about Medicine that you like?So I can change my second name to Zoidberg and run around going 'WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP'.(Original post by Miryo)
Simple thread.
Why do you want to become a doctor? what is it about it that makes it so appealing to you?
Seriously though... I want to be a Doctor because it is a career that has my combined interests of the human body and helping people, furthermore, the job is strenuous, challenging and for the most part you have to remain active (apart from when you're doing the mounds paperwork, of course), and I'm the type of person that likes to stay busy and challenged on a daily basis. Of course there are a lot of jobs which have the combination of human body science and the ability to help people, but what I really want to be able to do is diagnose. After shadowing a few Doctors, I have become very fascinated by their ability to digest information and symptoms and conclude with a diagnosis. I want to be able to use my mind and knowledge in that way in order to help people. [Insert more rambling here, and something about it looking cool on Scrubs/House]
TLDR; For me it is a highly desirable job because it combines my interests and personality with the outcome of helping people. -
Re: What is it about Medicine that you like?
I want to become a doctor but I have no real reason. Who seriously wants to be stuck in a hospital, for most of their life and for long hours? To be honest, deep inside, I love physics. That is what I want to do at Cambridge. And hopefully, I want to get a PhD on it! I have so many books on physics. Watched every show Prof. Cox done (don't really like the way he talks. And I don't really like it when people use analogy, although Physics is filled with analogy). I thought that if I think of being a doctor enough, soon I will love it, but that is really not the case. I want to do Physics, although getting a job will harder than getting a job if I do Maths.
I think I want to be doctor because of the respect and I just want to make my parents proud! But that to me, is not a good reason to do medicine. It's a matter of life and death here, not your respect and you parents being proud.
I know it's a long answer, but I wrote it v. quick <- (I wrote 'v. quick' instead of 'very quick' to show that I am writing quick, as I am using shortcuts)
EDIT: At least reply if you neg me.Last edited by JamalAhmed; 11-07-2012 at 22:09. -

(RIP) so that has always inspired me to do medicine, and then specialise in diagnostics or oncology

Re: What is it about Medicine that you like?I actually like the idea of working in hospitals for long hours. I've always liked hospitals, probably because of the way I've been treated when I was in them. If you want to do physics why don't you just do physics?(Original post by JamalAhmed)

House is awesome! Ahhh, sorry for your loss, a lot of medical applicants are fueled by the loss of a loved one. Good luck with your career choice, I hope you get to where you want to be.(Original post by techno836)

I am interested in diagnostics because of when I shadowed a consultant psychiatrist. We were in an autism assessment clinic and the way she derived a diagnosis from all the answers she got was truly remarkable. I'd love to be able to do that. -

Re: What is it about Medicine that you like?Diagnostics is in every specialization in medicine. Whether you're figuring out what illness someone has, what disability someone has or if you're a surgeon and have to diagnose what's happening in surgery. There is no general specialization called 'diagnostics' because no-one is expected to know enough about every specialization. That's why medicine is a very multi-disciplinary field, if something is out of your specialization you refer them to another specialist. Just choose the one which most interests you, which I imagine would be oncology

Re: What is it about Medicine that you like?
Money and bitches.
Only joking. I don't know really, it's nothing specific like "I've wanted this since I was a child!" or "I want to help people!". It's just everything, I considered it in conjunction with some other careers and it was the one I was the most interested in and it seemed like I would be suited to it. Quite a logical decision and now I can't imagine myself doing anything else. -

Do you know of any way I can get work experience with a Psychiatrist? It's one of the fields Im interested in but can't seem to find any work experience.
