I'd like to know specifically related to the life science department, not status, night life, some being russell group unis or not or prestige. thank you
scratch that, include those apsects listed above

    Reading
    Birmingham
    Leeds
    UEA
    Liverpool
    Southampton
    Newcastle
    Surrey
    Sussex

i've never been one to rely on league tables because they are all different

    Re: Rank these universities
Its pretty difficult to place those Universities in order, they are all very similar to be honest.

So we're to make a league table for you... I'm not sure how logical this plan is.

Yeah sure, well it's Russell Group, has probably close to the best reputation for nigh life, it's a relatively old uni - very good reputation. It's got a strong research rating, an extremely popular choice making it a competitive uni!

I would put Southampton's reputation slightly higher, but Leeds is above the others I would say yeah ! However in general terms Leeds has a better reputation for humanities than science but thats just a broad generalisation and it's strong in a number of areas

Personal opinion is difficult cause we would look for different things, BUT i looked for best teaching, and liked smaller universities like Sussex and Surrey because you would get more attention and help from teachers rather then being just another number. Surrey also has a very good program where (I think) 80% of students take a year out and work in labs and industries, which is really helpful to get a job.
If your looking for nightlife I would go for the bigger universities in Cities like Leeds and Newcastle.
With all aspects included, my PERSONAL ranking would be something like this:

    Surrey
    Sussex
    Birmingham
    UEA
    Southampton
    Newcastle
    Liverpool
    Leeds

This is because I focused on a place that would get me a job, in a nice location, with good sports facilities and clubs that i want to join.
My last word of advice is that if you are deciding between these universities, i would pick due to personal preference of nightlife and location etc.. because they are all similar in jobs. Also if reputation is important a Russel group uni will help with that.

P.S. I will be a bit bias towards Surrey cause Im about to study microbiology there! But i hope this helped anyway

well yes, that is the objective. Thought it would be better to get opinions from students themselves instead of statistics ect. I would assume you guys would have more information

    nice choices, everyone loves Leeds

I visited Leeds when I got my offer, the place was pretty nice!

The reason i'm asking is because I might ask to change my place, im not too sure yet but these are the ones that still (very surprisingly) have spaces on their course! Are clearing grades always lower then the standard offers?

Surrey does look really nice, I had a biomedic tell me how much she loved Surrey!

What would you say about Reading in terms of rep with the Biological Science department ?

No, Im pretty sure they are the same.

I only say that because i changed my course and applied to a different university through extra, and the grades were no lower then i expected. Clearing might be different though, but i wouldn't think so.

    Are you at university?

Just I'm seeing you in a lot of threads in vastly different subjects, and you seem to have extremely specific rankings in all of them.

EDIT: OP, rather than asking someone on the internet what they think, can I recommend you go to the open days of these universities and see for yourself

For example liverpool, birmingham and leeds are in large cities with 10s of 000s of students. UEA is on a campus near Norwich and Sussex is a campus as well. They are vastly different in their surroundings. In addition people at the universities will be able to answer questions about job prospects, nightlife etc far better than most people on here can.

what and where did you change it from and to what ?
I Changed twice actually (I was very undecided).

Once was from Manchester doing Biochemistry, to Sussex doing the same course. That was easy cause i already had offers from both i just needed to call up in change in the 1 week they allow.

The second time I changed it was cause I just did the microbiology unit in college and loved it, so i had to make alot of phone calls and ask my firm and insurance choices (which were now Sussex and UEA) to release me from my offers so that i could apply through extra to do microbiology at Surrey.

All sorted now and Im glad i did it

Why did you change from Manchester to Sussex? The Life Science department is supposed to be "to die for" so I hear ? I was lucky enough to get an offer (with pretty low GSCE and AS Levels ) for the biomedical science course, realised the offer was un-doable and wanted to change to UEA or Birmingham but they wouldn't let me !?
its good to know that you are happy with the outcome

and sorry for all the questions, it's late and i'm bored, this is the only thing stopping me from picking up my Biology text book xD

A few reasons really, as soon as i picked it i realized what i was unsure of before hand, which was that i didn't want to live in a city for the next 3 years, and like i said previously, i didn't want to go to such a massive university.
Who told you that the offer was un-doable?

And its okay, I'm happy to answer them, i have nothing better to do! Although i would recommend you pick up that Biology book :P

Well, many teachers and even parents informed me and that made me even more driven, but the reality of it is that it's almost impossible for me to go from BCC to AAB, even though I did manage to get my AS to ABB. It was just so much work and come June, I crashed and burnted

My insurance is Reading and I'm not sure how I feel about that :/

I'm not sure what to suggest really, because i think most the places you listed will still ask for at least ABB, but i have heard lots of stories of places still accepting you if you miss the grade slightly.
