    Re: Why are racists obsessed?
My problem is the hypocrisy of those who label people racist, particularly the inconsistency. In particular, the different response between making jokes about Chinese people unable to say 'L's and making jokes about Germans unable to say 'Squirrel'. Take Top Gear, the amount of stuff they say amount Americans but when they say anything about Mexicans it's suddenly wrong? Seriously, screw society.

And then those who think merely uttering the N word and being white makes it somehow worse.

On topic: Yes, people are obsessed by those which irritate them. If you don't like other races then you're going to be chasing people around feeding your obsession. It's not something limited to 'racism'.

They are just thick really. Ignorant as Dee Leigh says.

I am white and had a word with a friend the other day because of his use of the n word which I find to be an awkward and pretty awful word when a white friend uses it, but using it like any other word, rather than saying black they use the n word, really pisses me off.

His argument is they/rappers use it so why can't I? Trying to explain it falls on deaf ears, slavery and all that, they just agreed not to say it around me anymore.

I pointed out if you are uncomfortable using a word in any place at anytime it is probably offensive. As I tried saying, what do you think would happen to you if you were to be in Brixton talking like you do.

Annoyed me anyway as you can tell. There is an offensive word for every ethnicity/race and some people like to use them through sheer laziness I think, or maybe seeking reaction or a jolly old racist chat maybe, no idea.

Coming from a %99.999 white area I cannot understand how people can develop this opinion considering %95+ know nothing but white people and white life.

Anyway, for me racists are just the negative energy I do not need around me, very draining trying to explain something to people who are clearly set in their ways.

As a white why do I find racist words offensive/awkward?
To answer your last question, because they are just that: offensive and racist and insulting.

That's where I'm just baffled
I've asked him once, and his only reply was, "who told you that I had a black girlfriend?".

    :lolwut:

I can think of two reasons:
    1) His whole family is racist, so he is expected to be that way.
    2) He dated a black woman as though it was a "fetish" thing.

Remind me of a TSR user called Mick.W. He is white but does say some offending things about ethnic minorities and mixed-raced relationships, yet he is friends with other races and has dated a black woman

It's attention seeking, simples, sure the various groups, lefties/righties/uppys/dow- ...er no scratch that one actually typed it out then realized what i'd just ****ing wrote.

But its all attention seeking, sure they all like to call it publicity or brand recognition, but its just their own constant fear that the spotlight is not on them for even a fraction of a second, no group is immune from it,

veggies that'll go ewww whenever they see some even a compleate stranger eating meat
Squaddies that'll do everything possible to make sure you know they are squaddies
Mac users ... just mac users.

Its all wasted energy that could be put to good use.

Love your country? rather than doing rallys and singing ANGERLAND ANGERLAND ANGERLAND ... go down to your local wildlife trust and help with conservation and restoration and actually do something to really help your country.

Want socialism and leftie stuff (i don't know much about politics)? rather than ranting about the government and wearing Che Guevara t shirts go do some volunteer work to help those less fortunate, sure it won't effect the rich fat cats, but it'll improve the life of those on the lowest rungs of society...isn't that your end goal anyway?

    you're all just ****ing hipsters.

Because they love the thought of being controversial. They thrive from the attention it gives them because their normal lives aren't interesting enough so they have to be that way for attention, because we, as a society, give racists a lot more attention than we should. If we ignored them, I think they'd largely go away but because we're so strongly against it, which is right of course, but it gives them the thrill of knowing that they're causing mischief and getting headlines and news stories because of it. I'd just lock them all up and have done with it.

Racists are just lonely, the constant need to bring it up just arises from desperation to find similarly minded individuals, or just acceptance from others, which they won't usually get.

I actually think you're onto something with that theory, I have had people of other races who have flirted with me and bought my race into it and I know that other people have had the same thing happen to them.

Yeah exactly and it's horrible. It's one of those things you may have no idea about unless you really know the person, but then again you wouldn't be dating someone who you knew hated your race.

I have seen these comments before too and I feel sorry for the girl.

I've observed this among many racists. They initially seem to be mere "casual racists". They'll drop the odd slur every now and again, but they don't seem particularly malicious. And yet, eventually, something seems to happen, and their views become an obsession. They can't comment on anything - even the idea of going to some place or an event - without bringing "race" into the issue. They can't talk to a stranger without just getting in that one racialist topic. It's like an infection and an addiction at the same time. They're not happy with being racist in the same way that I have political views. I leave my many views aside when I'm discussing personal issues, but the racist has to make his outlook ubiquitous. There are no limits. In the end, it's the only "important" thing on their mind.

    Thoughts?
My thoughts involve this post being complete nonsense. None of the racists I know (and I know a few) act like this at all.

That is a mild exzaggeration some of these "normal people" do not have to live on so called "council estates" to read the Sun/Mirror, in fact most of them probably are not aware of the news and form their opinion from trash on TV or from their friends - sheeps flock together and all that.

Again not everyone on a council estate ascribes to the sterotype you are suggest. I used to live in one, although it was not really an estate a such, it was council run.

Ignorant people with illed informed opinion can be found anywhere so next should not over sterotype the whole council estate ho ha as Sun/Mirror readers............

    Subataomic -

he was not actually steretyping and he was replying to my comment and i wouldn't really call his opinion 'ill informed' --

Yes but your a student, which makes you reasonably educated compared to the masses (Really it's true).

Go into an average council estate or chat to "Normal People". These people read papers like the Sun/Mirror and believe it as fact. THAT'S where the danger lies.

Just be very thankful that you have a good, clean and open mind to things. Your in a minority group .
I don't think it comes down to education, my opinion is racism is propagated within peer groups and the family home, if someone with little education had an under educated family whom take people for what they are then it would be doubtful that racist offspring would be produced by such a family, basically if one is not strong enough in mind to formulate their own views then they will more than likely adopt the views of their family and peers.

Like has been said a few times on here, it is mainly ignorance.

    Re: Why are racists obsessed?
As much as i oppose racism, I would say from an academic viewpoint it is far better than anti-racism. At least racists have a better understanding of racialism or the differences between races (but they go about it in an unaccaptable way), anti-racists in contrast are the dumbest people alive who don't understand science. They seem to think race is only about skin colour, and trivialise all other factors. Thus as Baker (1974) remarks:

‘The question arises, why so many people say or imply that the races differ only in skin colour when this is so obviously untrue. Those who minimise racial differences by speaking as though the only difference between a European and (for instance) a Chinese were of skin colour, appear unwittingly to admit that recognition of the more fundamental differences that actually exist might affect people’s views on the ethnic problem; for it might be regarded as unlikely that such differences could co-exist with exact similarity in the parts of the body concerned with thought and feeling.’
We see plenty of this in this thread from the anti-racists. At least racists in contrast understand science and the reality of racial differences (far more than mere skin pigment), they just go about it though in the wrong way.

    Is spot on.

You don't get much more racist than calling somebody an ape do you?

Because once you believe that one race is inferior to another, that affects your beliefs about any systems which receive input from that supposedly inferior race. If a social system is doing well then it is therefore doing it well despite being hindered by members of an inferior race, and if it is not doing well then it is not doing well in part because of being hindered by members of an inferior race. In this way, racism affects a person's entire worldview and their judgements on many social matters.

It is also understandable that a racist would air his or her opinions regularly; any opinion held strongly, which also is judged by the holder to be relevant to the matter at hand, tends to be aired. It's not a surprise that a racist would attempt to propagate his or her feelings on race, just as would any person on any matter thought important to them. The fact that the belief is held on poor grounds doesn't change that.
This is the most intelligent and well-thought-out comment so far on an initial post which is not the most scientific of observations in the first place. I would just add that racists may seem to turn everything to race is because it is to them an obvious yet unacknowledged answer to many social problems and issues, and it must be very frustrating that nobody seems to take it into account, and that it is even taboo to do so.
