    Hearing impairment and university
    Hello,

I am currently in Year 12 and soon I will be applying for 2013 university entry. I also have a severe/profound hearing loss, for which I have hearing aids for. My personal tutor recently told me that I would need to consider getting support whilst at university, such as having a notetaker as I can't listen/write at the same time. Is that all I will need?

Additionally, I have had extra time in exams, which I suspect is because of my language delay (apparently, I was about 3-4 until I spoke). However, I'm guessing that this isn't a valid reason for having extra time at degree-level, so I don't think I'll be applying for it when I get to university.

Also, I've heard about DSA, and apparently, I qualify for it. To my understanding, I wouldn't need to use DSA other than for a notetaker, right? I don't use any other specialist equipment.

    Thanks in advance.

You may benefit from a radio aid hearing device to allow you to listen to lectures, or a laptop to write essays on. A digital voice recorder is often useful to back up group sessions. there are a variety of things that you may find useful, and if you have a need for them then they can be supplied.

You'll probably be recommended a load of stuff you hadn't thought about it. It doesn't matter if you don't know what you think you need.

I'm hearing impaired and receive DSA for it. I'm entitled to a note taker and something called a 'contego receiver and microphone' which is kind-of like a portable loop system for seminars and such like. You give the tutor the transmitter and you wear a receiver so that you hear the tutor regardless of where they are, but the hearing aids still pick up noise in the immediate surroundings so you can still here those near-by which is useful for group work Or you can put it in the centre of a circle of students to ensure you pick up everything. Lecturers are also being made aware of my impairment and seminars are to be arranged in such a way so I can see each student which allows me to lip read if need be

I do get extra time in exams and various other bits but I think the other sections of my DSA are because of my anxiety disorder as opposed to my hearing impairment!

I'd advise you to apply for DSA when you do student finance. I found it a really simple process that's made me a lot less worried about university knowing that the support is in place!

Thank you for all of your responses. I wasn't aware that there would be an assessment which would determine what I would need, so thanks. One thing less to worry about.
