Withdrawn From Course.
Can anyone help me please?
Due to a massive family problem I failed my first year and have been withdrawn from my university course. I did make an appeal but it seems to have gone to? I had been advised to expect either to redo the module's I failed (only just) or at worse to do the whole year again. So I am in shock at the appeal fail.
No one at the uni seems to know who or what I need to do to salvage this mess or get on another course, tried the CAB who didn't know and UCAS were not very helpful. Does anyone know what I could do? -
Re: Withdrawn From Course. If you have failed enough modules/courses then you simply have to chose to resit in the summer, or retake the year - whatever the university offer. Appealing to external bodies will make no difference, the university have clear decided that you just aren't at the academic standard to progress to the second year.(Original post by Corsairboxinroom)

If you have had genuine mitigating circumstances that is no problem or damage to you in the long term. There are all sorts of very genuine reasons while people perform badly in exams, quite apart from not working hard enough or not understanding the work. But those other reasons still do not mean the individual can be allowed to progress to the next, more difficult stage of the course. A university can't allow someone to progress if they don't have the necessary academic foundations. It wouldn't be fair on you, on the staff or on your colleagues. -
Re: Withdrawn From Course.Hi, first of all don't panic too much this will only cause you a lot more stress and you will make yourself ill. I'm speaking from first hand experience after i failed a module which caused me to fail my first year.. Firstly, call your tutor and ask too see him in person as soon as possible, explain your situation and if you have to bring a family member who can back you up/prove your situation.. As well as this your university should have a student support center where you can go and discuss your options. You should be given an option to redo the modules you failed (If you failed 2 modules out of 4 for example you will only need to redo ONE module! If you failed more then half you modules you will have to re-take more.(Original post by Corsairboxinroom)

I understand the stress and worry you must be feeling right now, just sit down, get some important phone numbers of people at your university who can help you and speak to them. If you really enjoy what you do and enjoy university, DO NOT give up! Work your fingers to the bone this summer and make sure you pass this time round.
Trust me, it feels all that extra bit sweeter when you get re-graded too a pass mark you'll feel better than you've ever felt in your entire life!
Best of luck, and feel free to ask me anything else as i went through a very similar situation.

Re: Withdrawn From Course.
Thank you threeportdrift and SamGee.
I appreciate the reasons for not allowing me to continue if they think I am not up to scratch, but I have valid reasons (I think), for the problems and have sent an email to my course tutor who unfortunately is on leave at the moment. I am trying to get an appointment with different people and am going to take evidence to support my reasons for not doing so well.
I have been told that although I received an email confirming my appeal being received that it did not apparently reach the department who deals with appeals, so hopefully they will let me explain my situation and at least let me re-start the course.
UCAS have said I can apply for a course through clearing so at the moment there is a glimmer of hope.
Believe me SamGee, if I get the chance I will work like crazy to prove I am capable
Thanks again. -
Re: Withdrawn From Course.
If the university allows you to retake the year, then they will handle the re-enrolment. UCAS should not need to be involved as you are an exisiting student. You might be best advised to physically go into uni and track down the right person to talk to. The problem with this time of year is many lecturers and administrators take off on holiday. But there is usually a skelton staff available to deal with issues if you can get through to them. Try contacting your NUS office at university, they should have someone who can help you on the specifics of lodging an appeal and know who to talk to.
If you want to go to another university, you will need UCAS. UCAS at the moment will not be processing new applications until the clearing window opens.Last edited by edjunkie; 13-07-2012 at 14:36. -
Re: Withdrawn From Course.
Hi
Sorry to take so long.
I am now back at the same uni redoing the modules I failed.
The appeal was not allowed and I felt like a complete failure but decided to ask if I could re-apply through UCAS or whatever. I visited the main office and was sent to speak to the most helpful person I have ever met. She firstly looked at my grades and then I explained all that had happened, offered to show proof etc., The Lady advised me to put it all in writing again but with more details and send it to one of the Professor's. A couple of days later I was advised that I could have claimed mitigating circumstances but not being aware of this I hadn't. So yay!!! I was offered the chance to go back and am so happy. So to anyone who thinks the Student Handbook is too long and not worth looking at READ IT and also if you have problems to do with the course and am not getting answers speak to the people in the offices, etc they have heard it all before and know exactly who to contact etc. So a massive THANK YOU to Mandy at Abertay, you are one in a million
