I'm 19 and can't decide between going back to college or working full time
Hey everyone! I am 19 years old with a temp job at the moment so I decided to apply for college as I do enjoy learning etc.
However,
I have recently been offered an interview for a full time job as a nursery assistant and I really want to go on to either be a midwife or a primary school teacher.
College:
Pro's -
- I love learning in general
- The qualifications you come out with
- Increases prospects overall
Con's -
- I am 19 now, I have to pay rent and really want to move out of my mums and into my own place
- My income will be severely limited as I earn 200 a week atm but I would have to find a new part time job for weekends. I also have things to pay for.
Working:
Pro's -
- I get to work with children with the prospects of being trained up and gaining more qualifications.
- I can still earn a decent wage and even move out or get a car for work etc.
Con's -
- I would have a little jealousy over the fact I don't have any a levels
- I don't know if the qualifications I will get will allow me into uni at a later stage
It's really hard because I would love to go back to college to get the qualifications but I don't like the fact that I have to be stuck behind another 2 years in the same position as when I was 16.
Anyone got any other alternatives or help? I am just clueless. -

if you want to be a primary school teacher or a midwife you will have to go to university so you should research as to whether the qualifications you would get in your job would be accepted for that or not.
you wouldn't have to be stuck behind another two years, you can do an access to HE course since your over 18 and I believe that these can be one year courses rather than two. -

Impossible to say really, no idea how much you want to be a nursery assistant/midwife/teacher - would you be for fulfilled or even content working in a nursery setting in the long run?
I get the impression your considering the nursery assistant job as more of a stepping stone (to get your own place and a car?) so you can then go onto university to either be a midwife or teacher. If so, I'd personally recommend doing an access to HE course full time now for a year, then applying to university for a degree in midwifery or education... why delay if you want to enter one of those profession later on, particularly being a student living in halls/with parents is much easier on a loan/bursary then trying to keep your own place you just invested in from your nursery assistant wages.
