What are the most valued GCSEs?
Yeah I know GCSEs aren't that important and stuff but I'd just like to know, okay? I'm only gonna do about 9 GCSEs anyway, I'm doing Maths, Core Science, English literature, RE, French, History, Music, Art (maybe) and I'd like to do Spanish or Business or ICT. Are these GCSEs alright?

I honestly don't think it matters, at this stage in life just try to enjoy everything as much as possible. Not all a-levels require you to have a gcse in it either so they aren't too restricting on future options- good luck with your gcse's! I've just finished mine

You'd be better off asking this in one of the other forums (there are some dedicated for high school/GCSE talk)

To be perfectly honest, GCSEs really don't mean that much. Their only real purpose is to get you to college, and some colleges don't even care about which subjects you took, just so long as you have 5 GCSES A*-C. Business is a very easy GCSE. Your college may do the BTEC, which could be worth 2 GCSEs. I did a longer course, and managed to get 4 GCSEs out of business studies alone.

Have a think about what you want to do at college, and target the GCSEs around that. It'll just mean you can make a headstart towards those goals. But yeah, GCSEs are not a particularly useful qualification. Just make sure you get 5 of them or more at a good grade.

You need to do English Language as well as English Literature (or just do English which is a combination of the two).

Getting an English Baccalaureate would be good(English, Maths, 2 sciences, a foreign language and a humanities (History or Geography)). You seem to have the full package apart from another science. It really depends what you want to do in the future, as long as you get good grades in the core science, maths and English I don't think it matters that much.

Your GCSEs sound fine and you've got a good mix of subjects there, but bear in mind that Art at GCSE level will take a lot of your time (according to some of my friends already taking it), but if you like it, you won't really have a problem And I know it's a bit early, but try to base your GCSE subjects on the subjects that you'll most probably take for A levels. This way, you will definitely be more prepared for starting A levels.

I think your most valued GCSEs are English lit, Maths, History, and French mainly because they are quite respected subjects. That said, core science could also fall into this category too.

Maths and English are valued particularly highly, and science if you are looking to apply for something science-specific. Other than that, it tends not to matter much.

Atlhough obviously not as important as expected A levels, universities and higher education colleges will look at your GCSEs in lower 6th and when/if you apply. Try to do both English if possible, it would look much better than just one. Also, if there is an option and your school/college to do singles sciences, take it! I personally would not do music having talked to friends who are doing he course, and art does take up a lot of your time. ICT isn't bad, and RE is actually more respected than you think. Doing both French and Spanish would be very impressive! History is very good, have you considered geography too? Realistically, so long as you have 5A*-C grades then you're fine (especially is they're in your core subjects like maths, English , science, and either languages or history), although getting all your subjects in the A*-C range would be great!

Your GCSE's are fine, although, let me say that Spanish would be a more helpful GSCE than business or ICT, honestly.

In terms of a broader spectrum (not looking at your situation specifically), I'd say the most important GCSE's are Maths, English and Sciences. As always I suppose.

you need to do english language! and one more science would be better to allow you to change your mind and go down that road if you need to. GCSEs might not be important in the long run but if you want to do a levels you have to do them!

They're all equally valued as pointless, "mickey-mouse" qualifications.

Not true, you need English and Maths GCSE for all different types of job, university and LIFE!

e.g. to get on the big 4 consultancy firms, you need a 2.1 and English and Maths GCSE.

Am I right in thinking that you would love to know which school subjects might the most important for GSCEs (and employment market)? I would recommend you to take ones which you like, if you have the choice.

By the way what is RE?

English language and maths are undoubtedly the most important seen as they are the ones that employers/universities/colleges will look at first, seen as they're deemed as a basic requirement. As for the other subjects; definitely take what you enjoy. I made the mistake of picking the wrong subjects thinking I'd enjoy them, I took; double science, French, ICT and media studies. If I could go back I'd change ICT to triple science seen as I love science and hated ICT so much. You learn from your mistakes and I don't know one person who didn't regret at least one of their options at GCSE. It's best to try and test now than when you do your a-levels.
