Orientation Week 2012
Sooo... applications are open now and I've just applied (and paid). I'm European myself and have been to the UK on countless occasions, but I still think it's nice to get to know a couple of other new students (and the city!) before intro week commences.
Anyone else going or planning on?

Re: Orientation Week 2012i'm a bit freaked out, too!(Original post by Sanitka)
Yes, sure. I've never really talk to English people, I'm freaking out a bit and I want to test myself before entering a classroom! By the way, do you think the best date to move in could be the 15th?
we're all moving to a different country after all, so i guess there's nothing wrong with feeling a little anxious.
i think i've read somewhere (international student booklet 2012-13 perhaps?) that all students attending orientation week will move into permanent accomodation on the 15th as it is the last day of OW and we will have to move out of stepheson hall anyway. so you don't get to choose really.

Re: Orientation Week 2012I didn't know applications were open! Where are you guys getting all this information? I am an unconditional offer, applied for accommodation and everything, but I haven't gotten much info past the Student Booklet. I'm interested in finding stuff out, so that's why it worries me when I see on here that people have got their Welcome Package and everything already(Original post by ohdrama)

I want to know stuff too! Maybe I'm too impatient. But where did you find out that applications were open?

. drop them a quick email maybe? just to make sure they know you're definitely coming... i'd love to offer some kind of real advice here, but i guess there's nothing i can do.
re: OW
basically, i checked http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/newstuden...on/application every day for the last three months (yeah kinda obsessive, don't get me started
too excited to start uni again!)

Re: Orientation Week 2012I don't know, it seems an alright price considering you're getting accommodation, two meals a day, admission to Chatsworth House, a formal dinner and other activities/entertainment. Plus the information talks, tours, chance to settle-in before the crowds come, chance to talk to past international students seems worth it.(Original post by Sanitka)
But the Meet and Greet starts a bit later. And the Orientation Week costs 140 £, forget it! -
Re: Orientation Week 2012Haha! Yeah I was worried about the price too, which is why I checked to see what they were offering! But I really think it'll be good, especially since we will be in before the rush. I'm not sure if I'll get much from Intro Week with all the crowds and craziness, and then the week after classes start, so not much time to settle in. So I think International Orientation will be a great time to ask questions, find my way around etc(Original post by Sanitka)
You are a nice salesman
I'm tempted now!
Maybe you know:
the accomodation during theses days is different than the final one?
That means we have to carry all our luggages ?
Yes, the accommodation for these days is different from the final one. It's suggested that we only bring what we need for that week at first, and then move everything else in on the 15th. HOWEVER that's clearly not possible for most international students who are travelling alone. So they suggest that you pack essential items "on top of the suitcase so that they are easily accessible without unpacking everything". It is also possible to have things shipped in after you for bigger items (but that is probably to arrive after the 15th). You can read more here about what to bring for the week: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/newstuden...entation/bring -

Re: Orientation Week 2012You're right, intro week will be a time to get to know the city/campus etc. It is also a time for registration (for the health centre, classes etc) and moving into our accommodation.(Original post by pradeep)
hey....i am from India......if we are gonna be introduced to sheffield city and the university campus, etc during the 5 day orientation week betw 10th-15th then what is the purpose of intro week from 17th ?
International Orientation will have less people, will be more focused on moving into a new country, will offer advice on "cross-cultural living, safety, travel opportunities, driving in the UK, british culture, finances in the UK, banking, insurance, immigration, student life, careers, academic English" which includes things that the UK students won't need to know, and therefore won't be discussed during intro week. There would also be talks with current/past international students. Another major advantage is there will be less people and it would be easier to settle in before the craziness of intro week.
WARNING: This is just my impression. I don't know for sure, since I haven't done it yet. BUT if you want more information, you can read: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/newstuden...entation/index and http://www.shef.ac.uk/newstudents/introweek.Last edited by musicstudent; 19-07-2012 at 03:37. -

Re: Orientation Week 2012Loads go and make really good friends for the entire year there(Original post by pradeep)
^thanks for the info......i really hope to meet a lot of international students......and this is like a question to anybody......do most of the international students tend to attend/skip the orientation week since it ain't mandatory ??
Im working at orientation week this year as well
looks like an amazing programme - informative and fun

I want to know stuff too! Maybe I'm too impatient. But where did you find out that applications were open?
too excited to start uni again!)
but I really want to come because intro week seems too short to settle in and get used to the new country.
