carphone warehouse stealing my money!
So as the title states, carphone warehouse is stealing my money!
I brought a crappy sonny erricson W395 (which is broken) about 3 years ago when I was 15....
I went with my sister as she knows alot about phones.
Now, when I was purchasing the phone; the guy offered me insurance for ONE YEAR (!) and asked whether I would like it to be debited from my account (at 2 pounds a month) or pay the full amount, which would be 24 pounds or something. I did say to my sister that I wanted to pay the full amount and that it would have saved me a few quid. But, she was showing off and acting like a snobby bitch saying its only a few pounds more....
Anywways, as Ive been checking my statements for the months that have gone by, Ive discovered that carphone warehouse has been taking money off me with the amount ranging from 2-8 pounds sometimes per month and sometime sper week! Though, I dont understand why they are taking 8 pounds from me on occasions because the insurance is only suppose to be 2 pounds!
Should I tell them to track down the last payment and refund me the money which was taken thereafter?
Also, something stranged happened yesterday.
In my account balance, teher was 10 pounds (dont laugh!) and I deposited 100 pounds at HSBC.
When I went to check my balance as soon as my money was deposited, it said my final account balance was 97 pounds! shouldn't it have said 110 pounds?!
Please help me! -
Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!I think Im gonna go in store and tell them to explain themsleves, as I seriously don't have the money to waste on them....(Original post by badbodydouble)
Definitely ring up Carphone Warehouse and ask them to explain themselves!
This was posted from The Student Room's iPhone/iPad App
Yeah, thats what I will have to do(Original post by RandomPeopleDancin)
As above. Find out why they keep taking your money and resolve the problem. They should refund any money they have taken from you.
What will my bank do if they don't refund me the money?(Original post by ds4143)
You've got to call up your bank and let them know whats going on so they can help you and ofcourse as badbodydouble suggested, you should talk to carphone warehouse too...asap!
The guy said it was only suppose to be for a year! and this was 3 years ago! hence, theyve been taking money off me for 2 years! as I mentioned, he gave me the option to pay it up front for the year, so I didnt think they were gonna lie(Original post by Darth Stewie)
Ring them and ask them to cancel the insurance. Something you signed would of allowed them to continue the insurance until you tell them to cancel and it is extremely unlikely you will be able to get the money back.
Do I just tell HSBC I want no more cash going to them? Well, I can tell you for sure Im gonna fight till I get my money back!(Original post by Jam')
Cancel the standing order with your bank. Then ask Carphone warehouse for answers
Thanks everyone for your contributions! -
Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money! If you do want to phone, don't use the full-rate number which the most likely have. Instead use SayNoTo0870 (link here) to find a free alternative number. That way they won't get any more of your money (hopefully!).(Original post by cool pilot dude)

Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!Well at least you've learned a valuable life lesson, never agree to anything and more importantly never sign anything (especially pay x amount every week/month type contracts) without reading it fully because companies will screw you out of more money if you give them the opportunity.(Original post by cool pilot dude)

The agreement you signed will require you to inform them that you want to cancel the insurance hence you won't be able to retrieve any money but you should be able to stop them taking anymore by telling them you don't want it anymore.Last edited by Darth Stewie; 13-07-2012 at 10:52. -
Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!I'm on HSBC...just go to a HSBC ATM and there's a section on the screen where you can manage account or something. Then choose standing orders & direct debits and cancel the Carphone warehouse one(Original post by cool pilot dude)

Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!
You can contact them about it and request your money back. Unlikely you'll get it but worth a try.
The issue with your bank balance is a separate issue. Just because your account is showing £10 balance doesn't mean that you have £10 of available balance. Whenever you buy something using your card your available balance will drop by that amount (to protect the seller by keeping the money aside) but your actual balance won't change until the transaction has actually completed. What will have happened is you'll have had £10 in your account and then had around £23 debited from your account. This would take you into an unauthorised overdraft with the bank - which you shouldn't be charged for if you are under 18. Adding the £110 to your account will have pulled it out of unauthorised overdraft but obviously by basic mathematical calculation your balance won't realise the total £110 in the process. =)Last edited by Tycho; 13-07-2012 at 13:04. -
Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!Well, I was tricked...(Original post by WelshBluebird)
Whenever it is something like this, you usually have to cancel the insurance yourself.
Now, that wouldn't answer the question about the different amounts, but would answer why it is still carrying on.
I went in today and complained. One of teh guys gave me a free number to call.(Original post by RandomPeopleDancin)

Dont ask....(Original post by Aspiringlawstudent)
How on earth has this gone on for so long without you noticing?
Yeah, I went in today after I visited the shop I brought the phone from. I went to the express meachine thing and cancelled the payments and printed it off for confirmation(Original post by Jam')

In regards to my bank account; I have never had an overdraft! so, Im gonna go when there is not a long line and make an appointment.
Thnaks guys! -
Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money! That's what I mean, it's considered an unauthorised overdraft (you don't "have" it as such). Instead of rejecting the direct debits etc the bank honour them and put you into the red. The bank then charge you fees for this. Frankly I think it's ridiculous, but that's the way it is. Even if your bank didn't do it this way you'd be charged for them knocking back a direct debit - so it's a lose lose situation. Best approach is to get an arranged overdraft or keep your account well in the black.(Original post by cool pilot dude)

Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money! The banks fund a fair chunk of their operations with those fees. If they got rid of them you'd need to pay for your current account. At the moment the spendthrifts fund the sensible people. What a wonderful solution.(Original post by Tycho)

Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!I'd rather my bank knocked back a direct debit than placed me in unauthorised overdraft. I accept that the bank should be able to charge in either scenario, but give the account holder the choice (the lack of choise is what I was suggesting is ridiculous).(Original post by Norton1)

Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money! There's a charge for missing the direct debit too though, basically comes to the same thing.(Original post by Tycho)

Re: carphone warehouse stealing my money!
hey mate, this may be a little late but call geeksquad on : 0800 049 6190
Choose account management option, they can find you from your post code and surname. Explain that you have been paying insurance for a handset you haven't had or used in the past year or so. If you bought another phone from carphone in the past year, also mention that when you upgraded the adviser didn't advise you to cancel the old policy.
At this point they should offer to calculate what they owe you and you will get a pay out, if they don't. Kick off a little about the crap service in the store you visited, they should of at least called geek on your behalf (thats what our cpw staff does in our branch) unless of course there were queues and they were too busy to do it then and there for you.
If they still don't want to refund anything, mention FSA guidelines and ask to either speak to someone higher or you will be going to the FSA regarding dodgy practices from the insurance company.
To be fair, geeksquad agents are usually really nice and chilled out on the phone, they get 2 hour breaks and play xbox on those breaks. But yeah, that should get your the cash back. Don't worry that you cancelled either, they can still do a calculation and send a cheque i think.
Iv seen them refund a hundred quid to customers in the past.
oh and don't quote me on any of that, i think im supposed to say:
My views and opinions are soley those of the originator of this post and in no way reflect those of Carphone Warehouse, Geek Squad or anybody affiliated with the organisation. I release them of any liability for these comments.

Cheers,
