Make sure you do work in your frees, it's so easy to just hang with friends in your frees and not do anything!!(Original post by journeyofeducation)
Hello!
I'm going to sixth form next year. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to survive sixth form and actually enjoy it!
My A-Levels will be: Geography, French, English Lit and Psychology

I suppose the best advice is to pace yourself and DONT leave everything to the last minute. -
Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!I disagree. Work when you need to and chill when you can afford to.(Original post by knight9434)

Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!
APPARANTLY, you need to do a minimum total of 10 hours a week for each subject - although this does include lessons which you'll probably have about 4 - 5 hours of a week.
Be organised. I had a folder for each exam I was going to sit.
And if you don't understand something then go over it, with a friend/teacher/different textbook until you do.
I'm not sure about the others, but for psychology, make sure you have all the perfect 12 mark answers written out and memorised for the exams. It sucks but unfortunately, it's the best was to pass it. And even though on aqa only one 12 marker comes up, you can use paragraphs from your other 12 markers to answer the shorter questions.
especially if it's at a 6th form college ie you're moving away from your high school and possibly your friends, try and make friends quickly as people soon form cliques.Last edited by Clare~Bear; 23-07-2012 at 09:39. -
Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide! We have card tornaments in our frees(Original post by The Dark Lord)
wowww hold on just a minute. I give the complete opposite advice! Don't do work in your frees! There really isn't much point unless you are behind with your work. Love life 2k12!

Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!Sixth form is pretty enjoyable, just make sure you get organised as soon as possible, work smart and hard and start revision as early as you can, A-levels aren't like GCSE where you can easily revise the night before. I've just finished year 12 and take french and english lit so feel free to ask me anything about them(Original post by journeyofeducation)

Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!
Sixth form is demonstrably easier to 'survive' than GCSE's. Yes, the work load is larger, but all the thickos have been filtred out and what you're left with are a bunch of people who've made an active choice in their choice of subject for the first time. This will have a huge effect if you have small classes as you'll become quite close with your classmates.
As others have said, the nack is to just get organised. You have more freedoms and more responsibilities and provided you're reasonably organised and thinking well ahead about university choices, you will almost certainly have a much easier time than at GCSE. -
Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide! For English Lit. - make sure you keep on top of all your reading! Don't leave it until the last minute and make sure you meet deadlines for coursework too!(Original post by journeyofeducation)

In general - try not to miss any lessons as the work load is much much more than GCSE and huge chunk of your course may be convered in 1 lessson! Also, work throughout the year, even in the first term! January modules come round the corner so fast that you need to work hard for any exams you may have and try to work in free periods!
Take the summer to try to relax, but if you have any reading to do over the summer (I did last year for English Lit...) then get it out of the way and be prepared for hard work in September!
Good luck!
P.S - feel free to ask me anything about English Lit., should you have any questions!Last edited by CLARA_; 13-07-2012 at 18:06. -
Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!definitely agree about keeping on top of the reading in English. We didn't read the book as a class usually so it's vital to read it beforehand to know what's happening.(Original post by CLARA_)

Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!
I do geography, literature, biology and pyschology so practically the same so you can ask me anything specific regarding them

Work hard play hard
its basically really important to stay on top of your work and dont leave revision to last minute because the January exams come around so quick! But saying that, it is just as important to actually enjoy sixth form as you're meant to look back on it as an enjoyable experience and not pure stress so if that involves being with your friends in frees then go for it
Good luck! -
Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!
My advice:
1: Revise as if your AS levels were your A2s (e.g. getting into university) and do as well as you can.
2: Revise smart. Mark schemes and exam/coursework commentaries are all on the net, read them and learn them.
3: don't just get in with one group of people in the first few weeks of 6th and only be close friends with them. Because if you decide after a month or two that you don't like them as much as you did, its quite hard to suddenly make new friends/find a new group. -
Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!I disagree. Most extracurricular activities are poorly organised/not entertaining.(Original post by Ebzeey :))
1. Stay organised
2. Enjoy yourself! - Take part in EVERYTHING extra-curricular, it's also a great way to meet new people..

I disagree. Most extracurricular activities are poorly organised/not entertaining.
Well I guess it depends on where you go, right? My sixth-form was amazing with all that stuff
And there's no harm in trying things out.. since "most extracurricular activities are poorly organised/not entertaining" that leaves "some" which are brilliantly organised and extremely entertaining, right?

Re: Sixth Form Survival Guide!I second this. Obviously it depends on what kind of a worker you are but you don't really need to work 24/7 during term time, especially the first term. Going over what you learn in class everyday is a good idea but really work in the holidays.(Original post by Inverse)
My advice:
Use the holidays to revise, don't stress yourself out too much during term time.
