Re: Margaret Rule Hall Freshers 2012
Hey guys :-)
I'm in margaret rule halls but in one of the studio flats on the top floor. Studying criminology and criminal psychology at postgrad level. Seeing as it looks like I'm on my own on the top floor, I hope I get an invite slid under my door to some MR parties

Re: Margaret Rule Hall Freshers 2012Generally speaking, they're as big as Portsmouth halls rooms are going to get. You have quite a bit more floor space than other halls, and that's even with a permanent desk and a bed.(Original post by Pogue)

Space certainly isnt a problem. Wardrobes are big enough. There's a rack to hang up clothes (buy some hangers), and a big shelf space. There's also space for storage on top of the wardrobe.
You will be able to store stuff under your bed, yes. There will be space at the end of your bed for a clothes horse. The windowsill has a large shelf too for items, though some may condensate. If they do this, you can let maintenance know and they will sort the problem.
The desks also have 3 drawers. They're colossal.
Things you should bring or arrange with other people to bring is a fan. I'd advise that for the first semester you have a personal fan and arrange a fan for the kitchen. Stupidly, the windows don't open much, so being 6 stories up, your rooms will get very hot. Fans are essential! Especially since you need the window closed at night. This is because you'll be living on the busy side of the building and you get to hear all the drunken drama outside until gone 3. Then at 4am the road cleaning vehicles start their rounds, then at 5 the trains start. If that doesn't keep you up, the fire alarms will, but fear not, its all part of the experience.
For flat 5-3 in particular you should bear in mind the table - if they haven't replaced it - is terrible. For a year we couldn't understand how it didnt collapse. Its barely connected to the legs, but maintenance kept giving it bog-job fixes.
You'll have the best year of your life - guaranteed. Its a family away from home, and its a year that passed me by far too quickly! -
Re: Margaret Rule Hall Freshers 2012
Yeah, I was in the luxury room
(Slightly larger room at the end of the flat)
James Watson is newer, but the rooms aren't as large. In fairness, you can't go wrong with Maggie Rule. Fair enough the rents quite dear, but you've everything on your doorstep, largest rooms available, no vermin (Bateson was ROUGH), your own toilet and shower, and other flats you can hang out in. We probably spent half our waking hours in 5-4 or vice versa. 5-4 is a good place for flat parties because they have a bigger kitchen. So do 5-5 for that matter. Come to think of it, 5-3 gets the short straw for kitchen size..
Oh, and get the freshers pack! Think I'm getting the Tiger pack. -

Re: Margaret Rule Hall Freshers 2012
As a former resident of Margeret Rule Halls (I wont say how long ago!) I thought I'd let you know about the numbers. 5 is the floor number, you're 2nd from the top, the 1st 3 is the flat number and the 2nd 3 is the room in that flat.
Randomly stumbled onto this post after discussing freshers with old friends, I'm so jealous now! Enjoy living in halls and freshers, you're going to have a great time! Plus Maggie Rule halls are very nice I was so pleased to be living there
