Re: Which religion (if any) is right?that is unfair too, its not like scientists had the choice to work with or without religion. You either discovered something that supported the church's views or nothing. In Newton's day religion was everything, you were either a part of it or you were killed, end of.(Original post by viriol)
Unfair view. Especially if you bear in mind just how much of science has had its roots in religion since Isaac Newton's days.
If you think science and religion are interwoven, just imagine a place with no religion, would the way things were scientifically discovered have changed? No, things would have just been discovered faster. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right? Not in that sense. To begin with, Newton's discoveries were everything but supporting the church's views at the time (remember Newton was born the year Galileo died, and we all know under what circumstances).(Original post by dem503)

My point (which is very inspired in John Barrow's in his book) is that there was not something you could objectively call science (in the sense that it follows the scientific method) before Newton and co. This is thought of as having to do with the fact that there being a set of universal rules the world must obey is in conformity with a world ruled by one deity (as opposed to the Ancient Greek's many deities - they had the mathematical tools they needed to do science, but their mindset didn't let them!).
Of course you could say that just shows that religion (which would be the Greek's in this case) can hamper science's development. Still, if their tools which were to enable science to kick off hadn't been there, how would science have started? And then, how did all that appear? Pythagora's religion, Thales' pantheistic views, ...
You ask me to imagine science in a world without religion. Well, it would without a doubt be less rich. Science is as amasingly applicable and powerful and beautiful today because so many people, theists and pantheists and atheists and agnostics and what-not, have dedicated their lives to it, all putting a bit of their view of the world in it. And above all, the way I see it, science wouldn't be as successful as it is today had it not been for the so many conflicting views and ideologies and philosophies in its midst. -

Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Comparing belief in Zeus with belief in the God christians, muslims and jewish believe in is like comparing a butterfly with a monkey. Sure, they're all animals, but that's not the point.(Original post by Teemo)
I don't like Ricky gervais at all, but:
There's so many flaws and ridiculous tales in every religion, i think its all a waste of time haha -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?
I believe that if there is a god he'll allow anyone of any religion into heaven because the idea of being lucky enough to select the right god to be a factor before taken into consideration for going to heaven is just stupid given the amount of religions there are, the vast majority of religions rely on bringing up kids in that religion to keep them afloat.
I don't believe religion is the be all or end of for any real godly deity. I just don't like the idea of everything going black when you die.Last edited by Snagprophet; 17-07-2012 at 19:42. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?
Islam is a universial religion. Islam means submission to the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. And God says in the Qur'an surah 51:57 "I have not created man and jinns except to serve Me" so we are all here for the purpose of serving God Almighty. Many people in this world are always unsatisfied and it is the nature of us human to worship or to serve and sometimes we all end up worshipping the wrong source. Islam teaches that God is a spirit and so therefore we should not worship material things. Islam also teaches that God is ONE. When we all serve One God, we all unite under one law, one brotherhood as we should. This is why I believe Islam or the fundamental beliefs of Islam or the meaning of Islam is the true religion and is the right religion for all of mankind.

Why? The bible was changed by humans anyway. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Internet? The Bible itself? I'm not saying Christianity is deffo not the 1 true religion it's just a critique that's all.(Original post by Cephalus)
Evidence? -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Hmm the internet isn't wholly accurate though. But I get what you're saying(Original post by Multitalented me)

Re: Which religion (if any) is right?
I wouldn't say any religion is *right*. As with anything in life, all have elements of truth and benefits as well as their pitfalls. However, if you were asking which religion is right in terms of creation of conflict, forcing beliefs upon others etc I would say Buddhism is the most benevolent, and probably self-beneficial religion to follow.
Just my opinion! -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Care to provide a source to back up your assertion?(Original post by viriol)
Well, fact is that a lot of the work that became the basis of quantum mechanics (by notable scientists such as Schroedinger) was inspired by eastern religions. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?
If god is what he is expected to be.. Or even half of what he is expected to be then it doesn't matter...
It shouldn't matter what religion you are because you should be judged on your merits not because you belong to x religion or that you even believe in him...
To have a god send you to hell for not believing in him or being in the wrong religion gives me the impression he is overhyped and not as good as what is thought of him....
