Re: Which religion (if any) is right?i want to rep you but i've reached my limit...so i'm awarding you this instead(Original post by Dmon1Unlimited)
If god is what he is expected to be.. Or even half of what he is expected to be then it doesn't matter...
It shouldn't matter what religion you are because you should be judged on your merits not because you belong to x religion or that you even believe in him...
To have a god send you to hell for not believing in him or being in the wrong religion gives me the impression he is overhyped and not as good as what is thought of him....
Incoming negs...

Re: Which religion (if any) is right? Why?(Original post by viriol)
Comparing belief in Zeus with belief in the God christians, muslims and jewish believe in is like comparing a butterfly with a monkey. Sure, they're all animals, but that's not the point. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?
Considering how much say and influence non-profits/ kings/ leaders/ popes/ etc have in the Bible and the Qu'ran and in the other books/ teachings it's highly unlikely that any religion is exactly 100% correct. This also goes for messages being lost in translation or slight "chinese whispers" effects.
It would be interesting to see how religions adjust to the proof of a God (if such a thing occurs). I wonder if they'd try to change the evidence or think of it as a Devil or perhaps change their teachings to better fit the "truth".
But it's against the nature of religion to be proved anyway... Religion is all about faith and culture and way of life rather than the quest for absolute verification. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Sure, there's wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_S...er#cite_note-3(Original post by Dmon1Unlimited)
Care to provide a source to back up your assertion?
and, if you prefer, there's Barrow's "The World Within The World"
http://www.amazon.com/The-World-With.../dp/0198519796
where the physicist devotes some time to philosophical viewpoints on physics (it also includes an interesting discussion of a relation between Kant and Bohr's physics). -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Zeus is a god of thunder, he is powerful but his power is very limited. In greek mythology the outcome of things would be decided by disputes among gods. Zeus was only a part (even if a large one) of the grand plan.(Original post by TurboCretin)
Why?
The God christians, muslims, and jews believe in is nothing like that. He is the only one, and His will alone can decide all. There are no divine disputes. There is no limitation to His powers.
Completely different. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?
I always find it amusing the way people mock Scientology and treat it as a joke when their religion is just as whacky.
I see the appeal of religion, I really do, but it's not for me- I don't need some made up purpose for my life or someone to forgive me after every mistake I make. Believe what you want to believe, but I don't want to hear about it. Ever. That's my general view.
The one thing that grinds my gears is when religious people take everything in their religion literally. For example, do you really think anyone who doesn't belive in a certain God (often just because of where they are born) is going to burn in hell for all eternity getting tortured by the Devil? Of course not (fingers crossed!). Also, sometimes religions get in the way of everyday issues that they aren't directly linked to but think they are some sort of moral compass- e.g. stem cell research, euthanasia etc. Oh, and the general conflicts and arguments that religons tend to create as regularly as possible are always painful to say the least (I'm looking at all you Islamaphobes on TSR for a start). Other than that, I don't mind it so much. -
Re: Which religion (if any) is right?I agree. There's a difference between religion being TRUE and a religion giving PURPOSE to life. If it helps gives purpose, then fair enough I guess.(Original post by Negaduck)

Re: Which religion (if any) is right?Democritus managed to guess the existence of atoms, among other things. What's your point? The fact that some ancient concept bares some passing resemblance to a modern scientific concept means nothing.(Original post by viriol)
That is true. Look it up.
It makes those bits plausible. You see, there is nothing "correct" in science, only "wrong" or "plausible". If you seek a scientific proof or refutation of any mainstream religion you will find none.
