Resolution 2012/09 - The temporary suspension of the Syrian Arab Republic.....

A resolution from the representative for Georgia!

Resolution

Committee: Security Council

Submitted By: Georgia

Deeply disturbed by the genocide being committed in the Syrian Arab Republic by the al Assad regime,
Believing that it is unacceptable at the MUN to have representatives of a regime which is committing such horrific acts of violence sit amongst us,

1. Calls upon the Security Council to temporarily suspend the Syrian Arab Republic from the MUN,
2. Proclaims that is should not be in the moral conscience of any democracy of this world to sit in the same room as representatives of a regime that is committing genocide everyday,
3. Suggests that the Syrian Arab Republic is reinstated once the al Assad regime has left office,
4. Expresses its hope that the Security Council can put aside its self interest and support this resolution,
5. Urges all nations represented at the MUN to support our resolution.

This failed in the Security Council vote. The GA will now debate this.

This is now open for debate!

The Kingdom of Denmark disagrees with this tactic. Though it would symbolise our growing resentment of the crimes being committed by the Syrian state, it would do nothing else to advance the cause of peace. Like it or not, the fastest end to the killing will come through the use of both peacekeeping force and diplomatic pressure. Ejecting Syria's UN representative will hinder this and could even drive them into a position wherein they'd feel no need to at all mitigate their crimes against humanity. As such we will not support this resolution.

Georgia agrees with the Kingdom of Denmark that the quickest way to end this horrific genocide is to increase diplomatic pressure. Georgia believes that the United Nations is the world's most prestigious institution and has respect all over the globe in every country. Suspending the representative of the Syrian Arab Republic will be one of the most significant diplomatic blows the country would face. We understand sentiments that this could be counter productive, but we stress that the Syrian regime has repeatedly ignored the wishes of the international community and even to this end are committing mass genocide in the country. We urge all democracies at the MUN to back this resolution and send a clear message to the illegitimate al Assad regime that their brutal killings are not acceptable and condemned.

Georgia would like to place a request with the Secretary General to release the results of this vote in the Security Council. Georgia firmly believes that the international community needs to be informed of the supporters of this regime in the Security Council.

I see no reason why it should be withheld.

4 Voted in favour, 2 Against, and none abstained.

Georgia would like to thank the Secretary General for releasing these results. Could the SG further inform the chamber of which SC countries voted in favour of the suspension and which countries voted against. Thank you.

Georgia would like to thank the SG for informing us of how SC countries voted on this resolution. Georgia would like to thank India, USA, UK and the Czech Republic for their support. We find it categorically deplorable that Moscow is supporting this murderous regime. We urge the international community to not just condemn Syria, but also condemn Russia for their support of such a brutal regime. No country in this great chamber should sit next to representatives of such a murderous regime. Georgia will continue to increase the diplomatic pressure on the al Assad regime and we urge all countries to work with us in our efforts.
The MHoC opposes this motion for precisely the same reason as Denmark. We must use diplomacy to solve the growing crisis. Removing Syria from the MUN will not achieve this.

Malaysia is relieved to see tha there may be some subsidy of all the crisis in Syria in recent times. It could not have carried on further. We hope that this is a move to help others acknowledge the UN's stance on such levels of oppresivism.
Reply 9
Australia seconds the sentiments of the MHoC and Denmark, isolating Syria in such a manner would do nothing but further harm to any peace efforts for the country.

The French Republic has taken the step of already expelling the Syrian ambassador to Paris. We have reservations about doing the same in the UN. The institution was founded to provide a platform for diplomacy even in the midst of hostility and conflict; no member nation has ever been expelled before, the only nation previously considered for such treatment was South Africa during Apartheid. We thus do not support this proposal. However, we would consider switching representation from the Assad regime to the Syrian National Council.

We join the MHoC, Russia, China, Denmark and Australia in opposition to this resolution.

The MHoC opposes this resolution and has voted no. We believe that diplomatic pressure must come from within the MUN. We have already expelled the Syrian ambassador, but we do not need to do the same within the MUN. We need the Syrian representative present so that pressure can be put upon them.

OOC: Ironically enough it is vacant.
Poland disagrees with this resolution and believes that instead of isolating Syria, the MUN should place far more diplomatic pressure on the Syrian regime.
Mauritania believes this is the best course of action. It is hoped that this will be symbolic and finally make Assad realize he will not be able to continue with his regime and that they leave the nation permanently allowing them a final chance at a way out of this harm free.

Mauritania welcomes this motion as it perceives it as a route to intervention that now Mauritania feels is necessary. Once this motion passes Syria will no longer have a sovereignty and thus nations will be able to form a force and intervene to bring an end to Assad and his regime by force, if he chooses not to opt for his last chance at leaving the nation and declaring his regime over.

OOC: Until now.

The Syrian Arab Republic wishes to thank the Russian Federation and the Peoples Republic of China for their support in the Security Council.

We strongly dispute the false allegations of genocide made by Georgia in this resolution and call on all nations to reject these outlandish claims.

Georgia welcomes the support of Mauritania and agrees that this symbolic gesture will demonstrate to the world that the UN is taking decisive action.

Georgia welcomes the support of all nations that have voted in favour of this resolution here at the GA and in the SC. We continue to urge all countries at the MUN to vote in favour of this resolution and send a clear message to the al Assad regime that their genocide of innocent civilians will not be tolerated.

Georgia in the strongest terms possible condemns this statement by the Syrian representative. It is deplorable that members of this brutal regime are unwilling to accept responsibility for the genocide they are committing.
No nation at the MUN should sit in the presence of such a brutal regime.

OOC: Welcome to your position!
