Uni social life vs none uni social life?
This question has been at the back of my mind for ages now. Basically i'm jsut wondering what the social life is typically like at uni compared to the typical social life if i was to take a gap year or go straight into full time work.

There are obviously a lot more people concentrated in one area so its easier to make friends. However I found that you kinda settle down and have an average group of friends in second year.

Don't rush into a decision that you're not 100% comfortable with. It's always better to sit back and evaluate your situation rather than following the crowd.

Re: Uni social life vs none uni social life?
I found that whilst I was working FT on my gap year, much of my social life revolved around my workplace - simply because we were all working such anti-social hours that it destroyed our chances of socialising with normal people! In addition, in my case, most of my friends had already gone to uni, so I couldn't socialise with them. My workmates were a good bunch though and I had fun, but unfortunately changing jobs then has a very, very significant impact on your social life.

Whilst travelling, it was very much a case of making friends with people along the way - often short, intense friendships that ended when you moved on to separate locations but picked up again where you left off if you met up again along the way.

At uni, the social life has (for me) been primarily based around halls and societies (my course isn't one that really socialises together, although a lot do). You meet a lot of people, and as time moves on some fall by the wayside and you get a good group of friends together, and you will probably end up living with that group. It's a much more stable social life to have than either work or travelling.

If you're unsure though - take a gap year and see what it's like. You can go to uni at any point in your life - it doesn't have to be now.

I should also point out this is only one of the many factors influencing my decision as to whether to go to uni or not.

    Not THAT kind of expand!!!!

By 'expand' I meant include more detail about your situation and what you would like to know. I imagine the working social life would be similar to our 6th forms in which we went out after work at least once a weekend and came home unable to remember what had happened. With uni i imagine it would be every other day and not just the weekend.

So you're trying to decide between a gap year followed by uni or just go straight to work? Well I think if you have decent A levels, Uni is worth it. If you can afford to go on a gap year, do it. Not many people can, I sure can't. The main attraction of uni for me is independance, and I am sure that a gap year will provide a much stronger sense of independance, and ofcourse you won't have a heavy workload that interrupts relaxation/enjoyment!

I hope that is counterballanced by making a fair few very close friends, and potentially having your halls-mates as a secondary-family lol?

Yup, thats pretty much the gist of it. I could afford to do a gap year as i have like £5000 saved up. I'm just wondering what the social life is like as that is one of the big factors in my decision

very easy to make fake friends. You'll make these mistakes in your first year, by your second you will learn that your work is more important and after your degree ends you will barely see your 'friends' at university. Just be sure to academically wipe them over the floor with your grades!

Re: Uni social life vs none uni social life?
uni social life is fantastic, have made better friends in the last 3 years than i made the 18 previous years before that. always love it when people put down the uni lifestyle or whatever, but i'd rather take the debts i'm going to have for the amount of fun i've had in the last 3 (and next 1) years than have stayed at home and started working 9-5 in an office or in tesco or all the other **** the people in my year who didn't at least go to college did.

can't imagine i'd be anywhere near as happy with my life if i'd decided to stay at home and work full time. sure i could probably still go out and i know a few people who work full time but still go out three times a week. the difference being the next day they have to get up and go to their boring work with a hangover, whilst i get to sit in my pants and play xbox all day, unless i have to go in to uni for some of my pathetically low contact hours or maybe even do an essay.

and yes i did just make out social life = going out. deal with it.
