    Question about Jobseekers Allowance
Posting for a friend who is trying to find out the answer to this question but can't find it anywhere and is, let's be honest, too lazy to join up so she can post. Wondered if anyone might know.

She's just finished uni and looking for a job but has signed on for Jobseeker's Allowance. She applied online last week, had her interview thing or whatever it is on Thursday. The person there was a bit surprised to see that she was meant to sign on that day and asked her to sign her booklet thing for the date she made the application to Thursday. So my friend is wondering if she's going to be paid in the next few days for that week? Everything online seems to say that it's when you get your letter through confirming it all but she's wondering if it's different because she was asked to sign on Thursday. I don't really know how it all works as I've never claimed before but she had another claim for jobseekers last year so don't know if that's why it's quicker or something?

Anyone know whether she'll get that money soon or have to wait another 2 weeks or whatever it is til you normally get the first payment?

There are three waiting days for which a claimant is not paid. They start, assuming that she complies with all requests for paperwork on time, on the day she makes the online claim. After that she is paid. The first payment will be a short payment to bring her onto a regular payment cycle.

However when she receives her first payment will depend as much as anything on the holiday rota at the DWP office.

nothing will get paid until belfast approve it. I had to wait two weeks before i got a letter in the post from belfast telling me how much i am to get. BUT...te jsa will be back dated to the date you applied. Just tell your friend it'll take a while but it'll come through in the end.

Not entirely sure as I've only just signed on but I was told that you were paid 2 weeks in arrears so your friend won't get anything for a fortnight (presumably until they next sign on).

Thanks for the replies, consensus is she won't get it yet then, will let her know.

hothedgehog, when you went for your interview, did you sign some book thing? I think she said it's the book thing that you sign every week. Think that's why she's unsure, apparently the woman sounded surprised that she was signing it that day so wondered if that meant she would get it soon.

No, when I went for my interview I set up my jobseekers agreement thing and then signed it and a few other things (that was last Thursday). I have to go in on Tuesday with my book and form to sign on.

So maybe it is different for her as she signed that signing on booklet apparently. I don't have a clue really but I'm sure she'll find out soon enough.

I had to sign on at my initial interview but didn't get money until I had signed on for the second time - it just depends on how fast they check all your claim details and approve it. I got a larger payment so that I was caught up with the usual sign-on cycle

You can't, only if it was your final year at uni
