If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?
I'm still waiting for my results, but I'd like to know whether I can consider further study at the institutions that ask for 2.1 overall if I get a 2.2 in the first year. I've seen a few posts discussing this and some of them say that 2.2 is a suicide. To be honest, I can't estimate to what extent certain information is true, because even my university is unhealthily obsessed with grades (tutors saying they want us to get 1sts and people feeling like failures when they get 2.1s or 2.2s...).

I wouldn't worry if you get a 2.2, universities are more interested in your final classification. In addition, second and third year usually have the more advanced and specialist courses, so focus on doing well in those- and remember that most postgrad courses require a 2.1, so don't panic!

Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed? It does - by 11% and only 3.0 best units count (the courses at UCL have either 0.5 or 1.0 values and each year consists of courses worth 4.0 units altogether).(Original post by gutenberg)

Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?Well if you have got a 2.2 (and you don't know yet!) then it will make second and third year that little bit harder, but if you get good (read 2.1 or above) marks in second and third year then you should be fine; even if you apply in third year, if you have good second year marks and are predicted to do well in third year, that should be enough to secure you a conditional offer on most courses.(Original post by Ivanka)

Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed? Is that a whole-nation practice in the UK? I played it safe and did an internship in the Czech Republic where no one usually cares about grades.(Original post by Jimmi_Royal)
A 2.2 in 2nd year is ok, what you get in 2nd and 3rd year matter more really. Though if you're applying for internships or yearly placements employers will take your first year grade into account when picking applicants
Anyway, thanks to everyone for their replies! -
Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?
I guess you're not planning on applying for a placement during your degree? If not then it shouldn't matter too much. It'll make the rest of the years a bit harder, as has been said, becuase you'll have to get higher grades to average a 2:1, and chances are you'll know a bit less than if you'd got a 1st.
Placements are the only time it really matters, as a lot of them are based highly on your first year marks. -

Lol? You can get a 2:2 in 2nd year and still not be screwed nevermind 1st -
Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?Seriously?(Original post by omotoke)
I got a 2.2 in my second year worth 40%
3rd year is worth 20%
4th year worth 40%
can i still get a 1st ?
Of course you can. Just work out the percentages... -
Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed? You need to re-do your math. You could get 25% in your first year and still get a first overall (assuming you were somehow allowed to progress). It all depends on how your university awards the final certificates.(Original post by omotoke)
using calculators
if i got a 1st in 3rd year
and a 1st in 4th year
I would get a solid 2.1
do you reckon my uni would give me a 1st however based on credits -

im in 2nd year - doing a 4 year course
1st year - doesnt count
2 - 40%
3 - 20%
4 - 40% -
Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?Yeah you've already posted that.(Original post by omotoke)

It depends on what regulations your university puts on awarding the degree certificates. Do you have to get a 1st in a specific number of modules? Is it just done as a weighted average of each year? Without knowing those, it's impossible to know what you can get.
But this really should be something you can work out in seconds, it's basic key stage 3 averages. -
Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?Don't worry. I got a 2:2 overall at KCL, but still went on to do post grad (Masters and now DPhil) at a 'higher ranked university' - the same one I suspect you are thinking about. Took a bit of time, but I got there in the end.(Original post by Ivanka)

PS - please accept my apology if this post turns up in the wrong place - I haven't quite got the hang of it yet. -
Re: If You Get a 2.2 in Your First Year, Are You Screwed?
In my uni the 1st year doesn't count - which was useful for me because I got a 2:2 in 1st year, but a good 2:1 for 2nd year, and I'm sure I'll finish 3rd year strongly aswell.
Even if 1st year did count, I don't know how anyone can say you'd be screwed if you got a 2:2 in that year when you still have two more years to push it up a whole classification. -

Is that a whole-nation practice in the UK? I played it safe and did an internship in the Czech Republic where no one usually cares about grades.

Not all employers would care, but some definitely do. I applied for a statistics internship for a year and because I do a geography degree they needed me to pass this test thing which I did but they wanted me to attain 70% in my first year, unfortunately I was about 3% off so they chose someone else.
