Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?Actually, only going back over this post made me realise how stupid it was. Who thinks they're 'the best of their kind'? I certainly don't. I think they're all terribly dull, mediocre and uninspiring. I guarantee these bands will leave absolutely no legacy on music whatsoever. Once the indie kids realise that everyone else like them and it's not really indie any more, they'll soon be long forgotten.(Original post by Chillywilly93)
kings of leon first two albums aren't boring- they're genius
arctic monkeys are exciting and (were) very fresh
come on now, there's a reason these bands are considered the best of their kind. coldplay, now there's a boring band -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?Beat me to Tv On The Radio, Noah and the whale are great too.(Original post by FrescoDiMorte)
Arcade Fire, Bombay Bicycle Club, Portugal the man, The temper trap, TV ON THE RADIO (big one) and Zulu Winter. -

I loveeeeeee The Smiths! I quite like The Cure as well ^______^
Good shout! Not familiar with the other bands in terms of their music, but I've heard of them.
Great, glad some people here appreciate quality music
The bands towards the bottom of the list are generally more obscure, but still great nonetheless. If you like The Smiths and The Cure then they're definitely worth a listen imo -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?
Make sure to listen to all of Kings of Leon's back catalogue, especially the second and third albums, really good stuff.
You should look up Bright Eyes, Cursive, Radiohead, Manchester Orchestra, Pixies, Kevin Devine, Bombay Bicycle Club, ME, MGMT, Brand New, Sparklehorse, Tame Impala and The Wombats as well. -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?
The probably with getting into indie and asking for suggestions is you will get a lot of people (myself included) who will say pretentious things.
My advice would be, start listening to XFM or your local equivalent of an indie station. Its a good, friendly introduction
Edit: Also check out Underage Festival. Really good lineup for £20 in August.Last edited by mcs31; 14-07-2012 at 23:24. -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?both of their first two albums are so underrated, some beautiful songs and lyrics and just great songs. Yes arctic monkeys sing about lads about town **** but they inspired a lot of young kids to start their own bands. basically not boring, if anything the smiths are boring....yes but coldplay produce the same ****e constantly, this strange droning noise like a vaccum cleaner, whilst kings of leon have changed their sound ALOT, as have arctic monkeys, hence why their new album has had such a WTF reception, cos they aint singing about chip shops no more!(Original post by benpearson1)
No they're not. Only listened to the first album of theirs (I think) and I can tell you it definitely wasn't 'genius'. It was alright I suppose.
See my above post for Arctic Monkeys. They're ok, I just can only listen to Alex Turner yapping on about living above chipshops and sleeping with whores for so long. Gets rather dull.
I love how everyone jumps on the Coldplay hate bandwagon, but then vehemently deny that their 'indie' music isn't boring in the same way. I agree, Coldplay are totally boring. They're just a bit.. out there, aren't they? The very definition of insipid.
But so are a lot of the bands listed in the OP -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?
Contrary to popular belief, indie isn't actually a genre of music. It's a name given to artists who aren't signed onto one of the main, commercial record labels. Therefore the actual definition of indie can actually (and strangely) be given to artists such as Adele, Example or Dizzee Rascal who don't fit into what the accepted perception of 'indie' is.
However, people seem to have given the name 'indie' to obscure, lesser known bands which IMO seems a bit harsh pidgeonholing all artists that aren't widely known with the same tag.
Anyway, what you're looking for could be more 'alternative rock' as the artists on your OP are ones that pretty much 99% of people in the TSR average age bracket know about. I'd suggest other alternative pop/rock groups/singers such as Tribes, Pond, Mystery Jets, Tame Impala, The Black Keys (Brothers album is their best imo), The Crystal Stilts, The Enemy (stay away from new album though), Editors, White Lies, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Radiohead, Suede (Dog Man Star is a fantastic album), Echo & the Bunnymen, MGMT's Congratulations album, Doves, Elbow (seldom seen kid album!), The Strokes, The Libertines, Manic Street Preachers, The White Stripes, Pulp, The Horrors (primary colours album), Liars (Sisterworld album), Oasis, blur, Nick Drake (pink moon album in particular!), Arcade Fire, The National, Kasabian (imo their old stuff is their best), R.E.M, The Rapture, TV On The Radio (quite a few good albums so a lot to choose from) and The Verve
This is in the alternative genre rather than what people call 'indie' as your OP suggests you're more into alternative rock which some people can call indie. It's such a diverse genre despite people thinking it's 'safe music' but it's also obvious to see how current indie/alternative/whatever artists take influence from the indie godfathers of the 80's and 90's such as Joy Division (Crystal Stilts, White Lies, Editors) and The Smiths (blur formed as a result of seeing The Smiths on the South Bank Show and groups like Suede and James also claim to have been influenced by them.
Didn't mean for this to be so long! Anyway, have fun
P.s - Alternative/indie music can be very exciting, however I do not feel Two Door Cinema Club, out of all the awesome groups to listen to that are out and about atm do not represent this well. -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?I have to say, I'm loving The Cure right now. Boys don't cry is a fantastic somg, thanks for all your suggestions.(Original post by benpearson1)

Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?Fantastic, The Cure are honestly a fantastic band. I'd recommend Disintegration if you're looking for their most complete and best album, but for great songs just go for a greatest hits album.(Original post by Starrstruck)

Best of luck, you're entitled to listen to whatever you like, but there's so much good stuff out there that it shouldn't be overlooked. -
Re: Indie Rock music suggestions?I take your point on the first album, but I really think Turner's lyricism matured over the years. I'm a big fan of the band though so this is a totally biased opinion.(Original post by benpearson1)

Re: Indie Rock music suggestions? It's a disgrace that you've shoved Primal Scream in with the rest of those bands.(Original post by Caitlin94)
maccabees, 2 door cinema club, bombay bicycle club, los campesinos, wombats, white lies, vaccines, primal scream, mystery jets, doves, arcade fire
Great, glad some people here appreciate quality music
