    3 years for my Alevels?
    Hi
Okay so here goes, i was a complete idiot when chosing my AS levels this acedmic year, and for some unknown reason, i stuck with them... I want to do Economics (or something of that sort, like Economics with Geography.....) at a good university.

Anyways, i was wondering if top unis (i.e top 25) care if i have done my A levels over three years, instead of the more usual 3? I know obviously Oxbridge and LSE etc will probably care, but what about places like Nottingham, Bath etc?

    I currently do/have done:
    Maths (predicted A)
    Biology (predicted A*)
    Geography (predicted A*)
    Chemistry (Predicted C)

Next year (2012-2013), I plan to do:
    Maths (A2)
    Biology (A2)
    Geography (A2)
    Economics (AS)
    Extended project

And in the final year (2013-2014), I plan to do:
    Economics (A2)
Further Maths (Complete if possible, otherwise just AS)
And lots of volunteering work and work experience.

Any help would be appreciated. Also, i would like to know if i can get into any good unis with the current subjects that i do?

    Err, don't bother.

The 3rd year of your proposed A-levels will be a waste.

Those unis who really want F.Maths will just reject you anyway because you did your A-levels over 3 years.

Just finish your A-levels in 2 years, and don't apply to LSE, UCL, and Cambridge.

Re: 3 years for my Alevels?
Thanks for the help , but i have a couple of more questions

Would i be able to get offers from unis for my grades?
(I'm thinking about applying to nottingham, durham and liverpool so far)

And i was also thinking about applying for geog with econ in LSE or edinburgh, and i was thinking would they be put off by the fact that i applied to economics for 4 unis and geog with econ to only their's?

Also, Im doing the extended project, and i was doing it on the impacts of FDI (or something along those lines), and is that relevent?

PS sorry for late reply, but my laptop had got a virus, so i couldnt log on

If anybody could help me out here, that would be great, I'm really stuck, as its getting quite late and Im starting to go into panic mode
    thanks

With Edinburgh and LSE, I wouldn't alter your subjects as its then a thrown away choice. Both universities place A LOT of emphasis on the personal statement and quite frankly why should they give you an offer for their very over subscribed course if you're clearly not that interested and it doesn't seem to be your first choice? You don't apply to somewhere like LSE as an "add on" choice. With Edinburgh I would apply for straight economics then pick up geography once you arrive, as long as you take the correct modules in first year you can transfer your degree course to any valid combination. Look in the Edinburgh University sub forum for a thread by me entitled "outside courses in first and second year" for more information on this - I went to Edinburgh, and actually studied geography as my outside course.

With your grade profile you will be put on the pile for consideration, so then its up to your personal statement and how strong it is which is why you can't afford to waste choices on universities where you've diminished your prospects anyway by applying for a random course. If you want to do economics and geography then apply for it everywhere.

If you want to do AS Economics next year then go for it. Its unlikely to be part of an offer as it isn't a mandatory subject for economics so you'd just be able to do it for interest and not worry too much about the grade.

    Thanks for the help

What are your opinions about work experience or volunteering work required for economics?

I know for a fact the Bath and Nottingham don't mind if you take 3 years.
I'm in a similar situation, I emailed certain uni's(bath, notts,Bham,Bristol&Ma nchester), all said they've had many successful applicants which studied A levels for 3 years(note- they weren't on about retaking a year, just taking extra a levels).

I would recommend dropping both Chemistry and Biology and doing AS/A2 economics in one year, with FM AS if possible.

^^^ Yeah I was thinking that before, but i asked the head of econ. for my college, and he said they wouldnt be able to allow me to do that (take both AS/A2 economics in 1 year), unless I'm willing to study after hours and without a lot of teacher help, because of something to do with the timetables...

Then why not study after hours and give yourself a chance for top universities? It depends on much you want to get there really, I imagine that self teaching further maths would be more beneficial no? And easier.
