I can't remember if I put this in the original thread, but I'm doing all the Cores in lessons, as well as the Ms. I've done C1,2 and M1 this year, next I'll be doing C3 in January and 4 and M1 in summer.

So what I'm saying is it'll be just like any other subject (maths), so I should only be thinking of doing 3 modules in January and 3 in summer. They will obviously be sat with other subjects, so it will technically be 4 and 5 like you said. But the most important thing is that it's all independent. I know you know what you're talking about, but like everyone else, I just need to be heard, so I that I feel like whoever knows exactly what I'm doing, is genuinely saying that it's possible.

You see, you did 7 on your own, but that was over two years, right? I'm still wondering why it's 7 and not 6 though.

What do you mean by the bit in bold?

Last year for AS I got an A (I'm on OCR MEI, so slightly different board) and will get an A overall (only needed B's from my summer exams to get an A). Yeah I completely self taught 7 modules and I really enjoyed it - it sets you up well for working at uni. It's hard to say how long on average it took to learn a module, if you're talking about getting a B then I could do that with 2-3 weeks intensive work on a module but getting A's and especially A*s is a different story. I started working for summer exams at the beginning of March and I had 3 maths modules (C4, FP2 and S3), I would alternate weeks in which I studied FP2 or S3 and spent about 2 days (3-4 hours a day) a week on whichever one I was learning that week. The pure modules are harder to grasp and take longer to learn but the exams are easier than the applied module exams if you know your stuff. I had (sort of) finished the content of each module by easter (so mid-April) which turned out to be a very very good idea because I didn't really get a chance to revise them during exam time, so I had between mid April and the end of May to properly revise for them. I'd say for summer exams, make sure you have finished the content by easter and for the January exams try and finish the module at the end of November, it just makes life much easier when you're revising!

The easiest combination is going to be down to which modules you find easiest, Decision is supposed to be easy but it's the only module (D1) that I haven't got an A on, so it really is just down to which modules suit you. What I would say is that try and do D1, D2, S1, S2, M1, M2 as this gives you the most flexibility when it comes to making sure you get an A in both Maths and Further as you don't have to specify which modules you want to put towards each A-level, they sort them out after you have done all of them into your best possible combination to get the highest grades possible. Someone above mentioned how for normal A-level Maths you need C1-4 and either something like: M1&M2, S1&S2, D1&D2 or a combination of any 2 'AS' modules (eg M1&D1, S1&M1) (also, sorry if this seems complicated, it took me a while to work it out as my teacher had no idea!). So by doing the modules I put above it gives you the best possible chance of getting A's, I only realised during exam season that if I had done D2 instead of S3 then I'd have only needed 56 UMS to get an A whereas I needed 70UMS from S3 to get an A in FM. So working out what modules to do beforehand really is a good idea.

    So I did:
    Jan 2011: D1 - B
    June 2011: M1: A, FP1: A, S1: A
    Jan 2012: S2: A, M2: A

    as well as C1-4.

If you need any other help just ask!
what is the best way to teach your self. what methods did you use.

He says the modules. For the Cores you can use Mymaths, and you can also do that for all the 1s. For FP1 etc you need a book. Same with all the 2s. Use YouTube for some revision, but don't learn it from there. Then do past papers.

It's 7 because I was meant to do M1 in summer of year 13 with the normal maths people but I self taught it early and did it in year 12 so I could do M2 in year 13, which means that in year 13 when everyone else was learning M1, I had to do something else. And yeah, that was over 2 years.

It will be a lot of hard work but in my opinion if you are motivated and have support from your teachers then you'll be fine.

I think I'm motivated enough, with a number reasons. But teacher support may not be one of them. Why is it that I'm doing Further in a year on my own? Because I wasn't allowed to do it when we started. I only got an A in GCSE so everybody thought it would be too hard, and they almost didn't allow me to do normal maths! But there I am, probably best in our class.

So what I'm doing is AS, then once I've done that, and shown that I'm doing well in normal, then I'll say I'm doing A2. My friends all know, and of course they're saying I'm gonna die but they'll help me die, if you see what I mean XD joke.

I also wonder if you think I'll be doing 6 all in 1 year, because I've basically finished D1, I'll be doing FP1 over the summer and then D2 before Christmas. If all goes well, I might start A2 before Christmas. So do you think it's even more possible now, or is it the same to you?

You sound pretty clued up already but I thought I'd add my experience.

I took further maths AS in my second year, alongside further maths A2 self taught. I did this because my school didn't run further maths in my first year.

I found it doable definitely. I was with AQA (weird, I know) but three module content was pretty similar to the OCR MEIs at the time, because I went to some revision classes through the further maths network which still mostly applied. I also did some of their online revision class thingys which were really helpful to check you've covered everything well if you're self teaching.

One thing I'd say is don't be afraid to ask your teachers for help, even a mini lesson in a free of theirs. You'd be surprised how much a few minutes can help particularly with something which you don't quite get... They may explain in just the right way for you.

Just for reference I came out with a B in further overall. I did fp2 instead of fp3 with my friend which on hindsight was probably a bad move (had a D in that module). The only thing I remember was doing polar coordinates... I used the aqa textbooks from their website to teach.

I think your approach will have some advantages over running them both over the whole year. For example, youll have done the ones before the twos. In my case I did s2 first, which made s1 seem like a walk in the park but I think I could have done much better on s2 if I'd done it the other way.

Good luck, sorry this is a little disconnected, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Basically, the textbook is enough. I self-taught C1 and C2 and the majority of C3 and C4, and this year will be self-teaching M2 and possible FP3, and all I ever use is the textbook (along with all the other good mathematicians). You can waste your time on mymaths and youtube, but all that's necessary is that you complete the textbook, then do practice/past papers.

I was feeling very reassured, because as you said, I seem to have an easier approach. Then you said you got a B... I need an A, otherwise there isn't an ultimate point in me doing this. However, you said you got a D in FP2, and FP3 is supposed to be easier, and I do have a chance to be taught it with my friends, so long as I get on with FP1 before Christmas. How many marks off an A were you?

I'm surprised you did S2 before S1; I didn't know that was possible! So you did all the 1s and 2s, no 3s? FP1 and 2 and all the cores. How did you do in normal maths? A?

Youtube was great for M1! Revision, but still good. So far, all of the exams I've done have been through lessons, so I don't know much about self teaching. But I have done D1, which was way better on mymaths than in the book! Plus, you've got the next button, so if you've understood so far in the topic, you can spam it till you get to where you need to; it's just quicker than the book. Of course, it's bad to learn from youtube, but revision can be great.

You've had many excellent replies here so I won't bore you with more information, but just from my experience it is perfectly possible to do. In my AS year I did c1, c2, s1 then decided I wanted to do the full further maths in a year and so did m1 - 4, c3, c4, d1, fp1, fp2 in my A2 year along with physics A2. So if you chose to do it It's perfectly possible if you put the work in good luck.

I've done my AS exams for maths, physics and business. Very confident in maths, fairly sure I'll get a B in physics and because business is so unreliable I genuinely don't know what I'll get.

I've already started Further; D1 is almost finished, I'm going to do FP1 over the holidays and then D2 when we come back. This will be an AS and I hope to sit them all in January.

After January, is it possible for me to do another three modules, like FP1, S1 and S2, before summer? All on my own:nodots:

I know you need C3 and C4 for FP3, but I'll be able to cope with that (I'll just look ahead). Are there any other sort of rules I need to know about? For example, to get an A* in maths you need an average of 90% in C3 and C4 and then an A overall.

Note: I do all the Cores, M1 and M2 in lessons. I'll be doing all of Further independently  (which is another reason I'm doing it because I'll have proven that quality to unis). But of course I can ask for help.

EDIT: Can I put something like S2 and D2 with the Cores to get an A2, and then use all the 1s in Further?
    Personally, I've done:

    In AS Level - C1, C2 in January. M1, S1, C3 and C4 in June.

    In A2 Level - FP1, M2, D1 in January. FP2, FP3, S2 in June

I wouldn't let it panic you at all! Honestly, though I did try, I'm sure I could have tried harder as well, particularly putting more hours in to it. I slacked off at the beginning. As long as you commit to working hard you'll be fine. Plus like you point out fp2 was very bad- you will be doing a hopefully easier module with others doing it who you can ask for help (I had no one else doing it and it was pretty unrelated to the other modules so didn't really overlap at all). I just remembered it had proof by induction in too which is a bastard to master at first!

Yes I did all the ones and twos.

I got an A in maths with module marks 94, 84, 71(D1 which was a bit of a mess up for our class), 80, 79, 94.

For the modules which stopped me getting an A in further I had fp2 as above and then M2 (always hated mechanics and it's just worsened through my degree, which is unusual so probably won't be an issue for you) & S2 which as I said above I think I could have improved if I'd done it in the right order. I just averaged my module marks and got 73.8, can't remember the grade boundaries lol.

Yeah, so it doesn't seem like a problem, till you look at the bigger picture. I've only sat C1, 2 and M1. All were good, C2 maybe less than 90%, I'm not sure. This means I'm doing 9 next year, I've done D1, and if I can do C3 and S1 before the start of term, then I should be OK for the normal 6 in a year. But otherwise, it still is 9, including all the revision

You will be fine, you sound committed and clued up. Just make sure you figure out the time you need to put in to it and stick to it! Like you said in the op this will really show your commitment and ability to study independently.

Computer science. I could talk for a quite a while about why I want to do it even though I know nothing and have no experience with programming. And I could talk about maths, how I could even take a degree in that, but I'll just stick with CS for now.

Also, what's with the xxx? It doesn't bother me, I'm just curious

Iunno, just habit I guess, I do it at the end of pretty much all my tsr posts... Shows my friendly intention
I suppose, so when I'm debating in threads people know I'm not having a go.

And ah, cool. Just wondering as I was gonna say by the syllabi fp3 looks more relevant for a maths degree, but I'm sure someone else can advise you re. Cs relevance (not that it matters that much).

I'd say it's pretty safe to trust your friends with what's easiest, unless you like the opposite stuff to them, plus the extra support really will help you

FP3 seems easier than FP2 honestly and you gotta get most of the marks out of FP1 cos its the easiest compared to FP2 and FP3

Re: A2 Further maths in a year?
Hey I have a query!! My examination is confusing in further math matter. If I choose Further math then...1. I have to complete whole Mathematics AS and A2 in one year and in second year I have to do Full further math (AS and A2)

Than is it a risk doing full further math in A2 cuz u if do Whole math in one year and whole F.math in second year. To be honest i wanna go to LSE or City for Economics and actuary but they require A* in Mathematics. Doing Accelerated math will be a risk of not geting an a* So what should i do? Cuz F.Math is highly recommended. Should I leave f.math or take the risk?

    Thanks alot!!
