Durham or UCL?
Trying to finalise my choices for application next year and I'm stuck between UCL or Durham.
Current choices are:
- Cambridge
- LSE
- Durham or UCL
- St Andrews
- Edinburgh
All for straight economics. As far as I can tell there isn't much difference between the two courses which I why I'm having so much difficulty deciding. The only thing that stands out is a Corporate Finance Module at Durham (which is what I want to do out of Uni) but is that really enough to sway my decision?
What would you choose and why? Or even better, is anyone currently studying at either? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. -
Re: Durham or UCL?
Hey

I would say all of your choices are really good why not have Warwick as one of your options instead of Edinburgh? Anyways out of Durham and UCL I think it's a pretty hard decision both universities are very exceptional and have good reputation. You should try to weigh out pros and cons of both uni's
Bdw personally I would choose UCL instead of Durham probably because of reputation but again Durham is really good and I'm thinking of having it as an option next year for law.Last edited by lankan-gurl; 15-07-2012 at 10:27. -
Re: Durham or UCL?
Just out of curiousity why do you want to go into corporate finance after uni? I'd be wary of picking one uni over another based on what modules they offer. Once you start studying something properly your tastes will drastically change, as will your career aspirations. I'd pick ucl because it's london. On the other hand in durham your living costs will be a lot lower and it is still an awesome uni.

Well I guess it depends on my grades. I'm hoping for 5As at Higher but if I fall short Edinburgh is something to fall back on. Although I've heard St Andrews is really keen on giving out unconditionals so I suppose that would do. Perhaps I could apply to both if I drop Edinburgh.(Original post by lankan-gurl)

That made me think, thanks!

Re: Durham or UCL?
Both are immensely respected universities, but I'd say UCL's Economics department is stronger, and the course probably more rigorous overall. I say this because at Durham, the course is taught by the Business School rather than the Social Sciencies school, and therefore you have to take a few management modules, whereas at UCL it's a lot more mathematical (hence why they ask for the A* in Maths).
Whichever you end up going to, it's not as if you're going to be having a hard time getting a job or postgraduate offers (although in the case of the latter, UCL may be a better bet). -

Re: Durham or UCL?Well, I know I want to go into financial services and that area really stood out to me, that and investment management.(Original post by icancount23)

I guess, I like the idea of working with major corporations to help them expand and become more profitable. But, that's all liable to change during Uni, which is why I was a bit wary of it being a deciding factor, like you say. -
Re: Durham or UCL?After visiting both, i got the impression Durham was a bit less mathsy in terms of the course, UCL was moreso. Durhams department felt smaller, with less people.(Original post by rightofcentre)

If you can't decide on course look at the uni, Durham's Collegiate, UCL isn't ect. -
Re: Durham or UCL?
If you can take modules outside of your university at UCL, it might be worth looking into LSE's finance modules (I know for a fact they have very popular corporate finance options). I know you can take modules from other UoL colleges at LSE so I'd imagine it's also possible for UCL? Just a thought.
