    Marks differ a lot
    Hi,

I just finished my first year of my Social Science subject. I am an international student so I haven't done my A-levels here.

I recently got my marks for my first year and was a bit surprised about my mark. I got for the 3 subjects where I had to write essays 70, 77 and 78. That is good. But for the fourth one, which was a exam, I got a 50. I am just a bit surprised that that mark is so different. Especially because I found this subject very interesting and did by far the most reading.

What do you think about that? And what should I do about it?

You passed, which is all you needed to do. If you're wondering why there's such a large discrepancy between your essays and exam marks, speak to your tutors who can show you where you went wrong. It might be that you need to work on your exam technique; exams are very different to coursework and call upon different skills.

Congrats on passing first year, you did very well overall

If your first year doesn't count, than don't worry about the marks...................but it does show that your better at your coursework than exams..........so talk to your personal tutor about how to answer exam questions in your subject.

Thanks for the reply. Of my first year only the top 3 marks count around 10% towards my final mark. so it's Not too bad.

Tell me about it...the difference in my marks is laughable. I can get really decent firsts yet then in some modules only scrape 2:2s.

Don't worry about it at this stage. First year is mainly about settling into the routine of uni, learning how the marking works and adapting yourself to a different method to what was previously expected of you.

It may be that your exam technique needs working on. Or it could be that this particular marker was a little harsher then what you're used to. Either way, if you're that concerned you could arrange a meeting with the tutor to see where you could improve.

Don't worry though. You've done really well.
