For a non-high quality Skype call with audio and video, the average is about 100MB per hour, so 40GB should provide around 400 hours' worth.

Streaming video depends where it's being streamed from, or more specifically, what quality. If it's Youtube/iPlayer, consider playing at lower quality (there's normally an option in the player) or downloading a lower quality version for watching later on.

iPlayer uses roughly 350MB/hour for standard quality 700MB/hour for high-quality, or 1.1-1.2GB/hour for HD.

    Youtube about 350-500MB/hour standard quality.

Obviously if you have say 5 people in the house using equal amounts of the connection, then that's 8GB each bear in mind!

I used to have a data limit at my home and really hated it! I'd advise trying to persuade whoever's paying the bills to try move to another package, often it's not as expensive as you might think

Well, unless it'd HD, something like 300-700MB per hour? Bit hard to guess really as it can vary so much!

These limits are so bloody irritating. We used to have them until my dad realised we were going over by LOADS every month and it was cheaper to go full.

    MP3 files from Youtube?

Normally mp3s would be about 5MB for a 3-minute song.
From Youtube it might be more because you're actually downloading a video with audio and just stripping away the video. So it could be anything up to a few hundred MB, but wouldn't normally.
