Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?
My problem with Lil Wayne is that many people who think rap is terrible usually bring up the likes of Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. I'm mixed on Nicki Minaj (she has some good songs, it's just that she puts out a lot of crap too), but I'm not a fan of Lil Wayne. He doesn't represent the best things about the rap genre. Sure, there's some good qualities about him (e.g. he's good at using his rap knowledge to manage other artists), but personally I don't think he's very good and I certainly don't think he represents the rap genre well enough. This is why I enjoy stuff like the XXL Freshman lists - some of the artists on the list cause a stir (e.g. there was a lot of hate for Iggy Azalea making the 2012 list), but it brings to light what artists could be representing the genre well in the future, as well as making them more well-known.

Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?I don't think one artist can represent a genre anyway regardless of who it is. (Noone quote me and go 'Biggie IS rap' we get it you like rap, go away)(Original post by alexlduffy)

And if anyone wants to make their judgement of a genre based on one artist, they're a moron and their opinion doesn't matter anyway -
Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?Whoops, I worded that wrong. People name multiple artists, but Lil Wayne is one of the main names that come up, same with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Pitbull too.(Original post by ROYP)

I completely agree though. I have friends who say they hate the whole rap genre because of people like Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. It's like saying I hate rock music because I hate Nickelback. -
Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?
As Guru(a proper Hip Hop legend) once said;
It's mostly tha voice, that gets you up
It's mostly tha voice, that makes you buck
A lot of rappers got flavor, and some got skills
But if your voice ain't dope then you need to [chill... chill...]
The fact is Lil Wayne has very little lyrical skills, has an awful voice and his lyrics are generally just nonsense. I am 34 years old so maybe I am a little stuck in my ways when it comes to Hip Hop, but the fact is the stuff that is popular and in the charts right now can not be compared to acts like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Public Enemy who were all pretty massive at one time. -
Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?such an odd place to ask, but yes it was messed up for me too(Original post by B-Man.)
Is TSR's layout messed up for anyone else too? -
Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?
He's utter *****.
In the sense that his music is in no way listenable at all.
Not to mention talentless.
I can't really stand Cheryl Cole, 1D, Conor Maynard e.t.c. but if the song plays on the radio, it's not too big of a deal. Him however is just...

Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne?
Lil Wayne on women:
Little Walter on women:
Lil Wayne on love:
Beatles on love:
Clear sense of lacking talent and real talent respectively. Just find any complex theme ever present in music and listen to Lil Wayne ruin it; all he knows are money, bitches, living the 'thug life', drugs and 'swag'.

No idea how Cheryl Cole, 1 Direction or Conor Maynard are relevant -

The songs you posted of his I've not even heard before. Where did you dig them up from? Did they actually make any of his albums? -
Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne? No, you missed my point. I'm comparing the themes; for what is music without exploring themes. I've listened to Lil Wayne enough to form such opinions: from Sky is the Limit to My Homies(Original post by ROYP)

Uh, the latter is arguably one of his 'deepest', most 'emotional' songs as well as Sky is the Limit. They made albums.
He's really not good. If we was an independent artist on SoundCloud with like 300-500 followers, I'd be less discordant; but when people think of 'rap music', they think of this guy. It's surprising he has such a following, but que ser ser.Last edited by Id and Ego seek; 30-07-2012 at 15:31. -

Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne? Not yet, no. I've finished most of the tracks, but can't recall liking any of them, truthfully. Album definitely not.(Original post by ROYP)

Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne? And here, exactly, you miss the point. Lil Wayne's music isn't designed to be emotional, deep, or to be congruently thematic. It's just a collection of the cheesiest (or greatest, whichever way you want to see it) puns, innuendos and pieces of lyrical wordplay that he can put together whilst giving off the general message of him being a don. He often goes off on a tangent in his songs for this purpose and if you're looking for anything more than face value then you will be disappointed. Recently there have been a few more of the emotional type songs, How To Love and Mirror etc, but they're just the designated radio songs.(Original post by Id and Ego seek)

Fwiw, I think he's largely awful, his voice grates, and sometimes his puns are funny/good ('eat her till she cry, call that whine and dine') but they're always negated by an awful one somewhere in the same song. -
Re: What's wrong with Lil Wayne? No, I know; that is exactly why I don't like his music. That kind of music is emphatically awful. That what was wrong for me, not necessarily what is wrong with him objectively.(Original post by Straight up G)
