Good Maths Books for Physics - No further maths studied!
    Hey guys!

I'll be starting my physics degree in October, however I feel that i'm going to have a major disadvantage as I didn't study further maths in my A levels.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for maths books for physics? Anything on mathematical methods for physics, content covered in the further maths a levels/first year undergraduate level would be great!

Also, if anyone is currently doing physics and didn't study fm, how are you finding it? (Just for my peace of mind! )

    Thanks!

You could just learn the further mathematics syllabus...I learnt FP1 in about a week (got put in for the exam late), so doing both that and FP2 can't take that long, and you've got loads of time till October. The Edexcel Keith Pledger textbooks are really good imo:

I dunno any good specific mathematics for physics books so you'll have to wait for someone else to help you with that

Engineering Mathematics by KA Stroud is the book my uni use in the first year maths modules and is used at a lot of other unis as well. Generally speaking even the unis that don't use this book in particular will cover similar topics though, so it'll be useful to give you a head start on the maths.

Any previous edition will probably be fine as well if you can find them a bit cheaper.

Alternatively, contact the uni you're hoping to be going to in October, and ask them what text books are recommended/used for first year maths - as you might want to buy that book anyway.

I already posted this somewhere else, but it only shows how enamoured I am with this book: Further Mathematics for the Physical Sciences, by M Tinker and R Lambourne. There is Basic Mathematics for the Physical Sciences too, by the Same authors (but that book is for really basic stuff)

I have this book as well and it's pretty good, not quite as comprehensive as the Stroud book I mentioned, but does go into a few more advanced things I think.

I like the chapters organisation, with the fast track questions being a good assessment tool. Very accurate, I find that if I am comfortable with those, I can safely skip that particular chapter...
