Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriage
[Not sure whether to put this in religion/society/whatever... feel free to move mods]
link: http://www.heraldscotland.com/politi...endum.18161005
The Scottish Catholic church has said that gay marriage is more important than potential Scottish independence and that there should be a referendum on gay marriage before the independence one. Cardinal O'Brien says "Clearly, if it is sensible to hold a referendum on independence, it is crucial we have one on marriage." The Cardinal has also authorised a plan to raise £100,000 for a campaign against gay marriage. Sorry? £100,000? While people are starving here and elsewhere you're wasting £100,000 to deny others their rights?
Joe Deighan, who is "parliamentary officer for the Catholic Church in Scotland" and whose name keeps cropping up in this sort of story, says that "this [a gay marriage referendum] seems to be a higher priority [than the independence referendum] for many people."
It's like they're secretly entered the "most beyond parody" competition, and they are doing seriously well. -
Re: Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriage
Yes but Cardinal O'Brien is very wise. Lol I joke. Well partly. He's not trying to deny a gay persons right to marry in general. But denying a gay persons right to marry in a church (if I'm wrong I will surely retract this statement =P). Its more surprising that he wants a referendum. The public of scotland do not seem overly religious.

Didn't know who he was before this, but he sounds like a right prat.
One of the comments on the site nailed it:
'Hey, while we're at it, can we also vote on whether women can work and whether black people can own property? Those topics are beyond voting for and so is the issue of gay rights. The goal of all enlightened people is universal rights for all, no matter what gender, colour or sexual orientation. I've no doubt the bigoted bishop would get people to vote along with him, but in 100 years from now, those people will look mean and stupid.' -
Re: Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriageHe is trying to deny a gay person's right to marry in general. In Scotland atm gay people can have civil partnerships but not marriage. The SNP government wants to introduce gay marriage, the Catholic church (surprise, surprise) are against it.(Original post by Cephalus)

As to the referendum issue - I think the organisational structure of the Scottish churches would produce a "no" vote. Most polling shows that around half of Scots, or more, support gay marriage, but most of the responses to the government consultation were against, because the Catholic churches got their parishioners to send in postcards. I could envisage a situation where lots of people who are pro-gay marriage but not too bothered about it don't vote, while all the people who actually listen to the hysterics of people like Cardinal O'Brien vote, because they've been told society will implode if they don't.
That comment is spot on. He's the leader of the Catholic church in Scotland, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh I think. I'd only heard of him a while ago because I was raised Catholic, but his name's been in the Scottish papers quite often recently attacking gay marriage proposals. You'd think the SNP were proposing compulsory sodomy for all Catholics from the way he talks about it.(Original post by Pinkhead)

Re: Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriageWell exactly. I don't see him raising £100,000 to combat child poverty.(Original post by navarre)
Yet another clown whose poor grasp on the English language has led him to misread Jesus' message of helping the poor as actually saying 'oppress the gays'.
I mean, really. Hasn't religion done enough damage in this country's history? -
Re: Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriage
Hah ! Now why would you need to talk to ALL of the people in a referendum in order to discuss something which must either be surely right or wrong ?
And; if the subject matter is so complex, that it is not clearly/easily defined, then why look to the non-specialist public to make a decision about it ?
Fact is, this is a classic case of religious people meddling in legal and political affairs.
Where sin abounds, grace abounds.
Doctors and scientists are nowhere near defining what constitutes a genuine genetic pre-disposition based upon various gene types and faults.
More research and debate is required.
Me thinx... -

Re: Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriageEither that, or they've "bowed to the homosexualist lobby" and are fudging the facts :P(Original post by Pinkhead)

Re: Cardinal O'Brien's latest wisdom on gay marriageThere is, maybe a modicum of truth in your dictum.(Original post by Pinkhead)

BUT; can you say you actually have ENOUGH faith, RIGHT NOW, to have your whole genome rewritten ?
I trow not.
For; the average estrogen rate for men is between 3 and 12 %. Now; what if you had 25 % (as some do), but with the genitalia of a male ?
You will most probably have (wink) nice lips, (wink) soft skin, (wink) nice ass and hips, (wink) soft hair.
But; I STILL wouldn't F*** you...
So; you see the problem... -

Also, please stop overusing the semi-colon. It's extremely hard to read your post without pausing at the wrong places
