Re: Is Family Guy as funny as it was before? The trouble with them trying to be like South Park is that South Park has *always* been a risky show; and always been able to get away with very risky subject matter (the episodes featuring Muhammed etc.) but that's what it's audience expects and knows. They've done everything; even Cartman feeding a kid his parents in a chili.(Original post by concubine)
Aye. I wasn't a massive fan of American Dad to begin with but it's been far better than FG for some time now. Evidently that general group of writers are still capable of being funny, they should just let FG end before it's completely ruined.
It's like they're carrying on because... The Simpsons and South Park are? The Simpsons (which I never found good to start with) has sucked forever. South Park can continue because if if it's not as good as it was, it's still good.
They should just accept that their competition (shows like Archer and Venture Bros) is just so ****ing superior.
FG however has never been that risky, stays within the boundaries of decency, which makes episodes like the domestic violence one and the hallucinogenic one far too out there for it's audience and ends up disgusting/annoying/turning them off.
I'm a massive SP fan but when I watch SP I expect to be disgusted and bad taste subject matter to come up, I don't so much when I'm watching FG. I think this last season has been either funny episodes, plain boring episodes or episodes that try too much to emulate South Park and it doesn't work. I was disgusted in a bad way by the domestic violence episode and refused to watch it for a little while (watched it online when it came out) -

Aye. I've not really seen much of the past few seasons of FG but whenever they've gone overboard it just seems like they're trying too hard.
FG lacks the surreal nature of crudely drawn people (primarily kids) doing stuff to be entertaining when it gets carried away.
That said, I think part of what made me enjoy early FG far more was that it maintained a surreal vibe.... And that's what got it cancelled. It was all 'lolwut', or to use a word I've grown to hate, 'random', but still by and large within the confines of the stories. And it ruled. People, in general, have poor ****ing taste in things. Comedy is no real exception to this. So, viewing figures were low, they shrank, and it got cancelled.
It sells okay on DVD and gets given a second chance, but if they want to keep it going they have to make it more appealing to the masses. And that's where things get bad. This is something that has happened to countless TV shows and I really can't think of an exception to it diminishing the quality of the program.
The average viewer isn't the one you read the opinions of because they're either too stupid and lazy to articulate their opinion, or they're too busy being spoon fed ****.
People get bitchy and call you an 'elitist' when you say things like this, but it's the truth. It's not just in TV. It's in many things. By trying to capitalize upon success people 'betray' their original fan bases and invariably lose something of what made X great in the first place. -
Re: Is Family Guy as funny as it was before?Oh I know, it's shocking. I used to watch it a lot when I was younger while it was still okay, but now I can't believe anyone still watches it and laughs. The new episodes are so terrible.(Original post by elijahbrooke)
I cannot believe that the Simpsons is still going. Mind you, I've not watched it for years...
As for people mentioning South Park I've only recently started watching it, and for me it's gotten better over time. The later ones are better, even after that many seasons it still makes me laugh out loud, and I'm not even a laugh-out-loud kind of person! -
Re: Is Family Guy as funny as it was before?
I've only really been watching it more recently. Seen episodes from series 4 and 9. S4 is much better however my two cents are that they drag on some gags for far far too long. Extending it a little, yeah great, doing it for minutes, then it just gets a bit more boring.

Re: Is Family Guy as funny as it was before?
It's been hit and miss ever since they brought it back IMO. Every episode they'll have a few great gags, but the rest of it is either average or terrible. It'll never match the genius of classic Simpsons, and that stayed consistently brilliant for a lot longer than FG.

Re: Is Family Guy as funny as it was before?
Pre-cancelled Family guy was amazing because if you didn't enjoy a gag there'd be another on in 30 seconds and there was (some) sort of a story behind it. Season 4 was alright, season 5-7 are mediocre and season 8 onwards i've had maybe one laugh per episode barring the brian and stewie episodes (and not the one where they got locked in a bank which was truly execrable)
Now the gags can go on for 5 minutes, often it gets too preachy and it feels tired. I get it Meg is a punching bag, stewie is gay and bryan's a douche (which is what i disliked the most, i liked it when he was the foil to Peter a lot more).
Big fan of american dad. The relationship between the characters is a lot better and it's humorous without being too off-the-wall. The phantom of the telethon was amazing. -
Re: Is Family Guy as funny as it was before?
The one on BBC 3 when Meg turns 18, I don't think I properly laughed once.
As for the simpsons, they went through a phase where they weren't good at all, but recently I think some of them have been brilliant
American Dad however, I feel is brilliant constantly
And the Cleveland Show, bar the intro, is dire. -
