Is doing a PhD worth it?
First off I would like to apologize if there was a thread like this before I am kinda new on TSR.

Funnily enough I have not even began uni yet in fact I am waiting for my grades which hopefully meet my conditional offer. I have already decided to do masters if I like my course and if the circumstances are right

The question is if someone has a PhD is it easier for that person to get a job? Also is it really worth your time and money in the long run? Btw I am going to be doing electrical and electronic engineering.

Everyone wants to have Dr in front of their name however the question is do you thing it will help you out in future? and is it really worth the years you spend and money?

I personally think it is if you enjoy your subject.

    Certainly is.

I'm in a very similar position, I'll be studying for a masters in mechanical engineering with nuclear technology come september at Sheffield and then I'd like to do a PhD in Nuclear physics at Manchester to further my interest in nuclear science and that would give me the edge I need to get a good job in the energy sector. Perhaps you want to do something similar?

An EngD would probably be more useful in your field. Unless you want to go into research/academia as opposed to industry.

An EngD is a doctorate in Engineering - only an option for people in engineering-related subjects, obviously.

Generally no. Most jobs you're far better off getting into industry as soon as possible rather than staying in academia. There are of course some jobs that require a PhD.

Nuclear physics is quite specialist. Maybe better to look at the Nuclear EngD or the Nuclear First DTC? Sheffield is a partner in both schemes

Ah ok thanks, I guess one of those would be better. I've got plenty of time to think about it anyway

I think 'is it worth it?' is such a bland question.

The fact is, we all have different aims and objectives in life. Some want loads of money. Some have a burning, insatiable interest in a subject.

If what you want is the former, then no, I would probably say that a PhD may not be the best option. If it's the latter, it may be the best option.

On the other hand, you may get mid-way through your second year and stumble onto a stunning research proposal. Something that hasn't been done before. You may get +3 funding in which case turning it down would be foolish.

    So many ifs and buts.

I was in your position a year ago, and believe me a lot changes in a year.
