    Broken Xbox slim
So I got the xbox slim 4gb a couple of years ago and 1 month after the warranty ended I downloaded an update which seems to have killed the xbox, whenever I turn it on it just freezes after about 30 seconds. I barely used the xbox in the first year, didn't move it at all since it had come out of the box brand new. I've been fed up with it and I've just left it since last October because I think it's ridiculous that I should have to pay to get it fixed when it's Microsoft's fault for making a console with a major fault. I just went to their website to finally get it fixed and apparently it's going to cost £70 'plus tax' - what? I paid £200 for a brand new console to barely play it for it to break so easily so I can pay another big lump of money to get it fixed? I only wanted to play fifa! I fail to see how they can get away with only giving a one year warranty

    Any help?

Forgot to mention, the reason I bought a slim was because I didn't want to buy one of the old one's with the dodgy red ring of death problem - right now I feel I would have been better off with an old one than this thing! The irony.

It's not their fault you rarely played it.

I'm not saying it is, but it should be able to handle a bit of light playing every now and then without breaking?

No, it's their fault for manufacturing a dodgy unit and failing to spot it in quality control?

What you are really better off with is a PS3.

I've had a PS3 for years and it's fine! Wanted to play some xbox only games as well as friends online on fifa so finally decided to get an xbox, regret it big time now

That's what I was thinking, I don't know if it's a common problem or not but it seems ridiculous  If you bought any other electrical item, eg a washing machine, you'd expect it to work for years without many problems and it would come with a big warranty - our washing machine is older than I am and it still works fine!

My Old Xbox is still going strong.
Well It was replaced about 4 years after it broke but that was free.

The old Xboxes sucked. I've been through two myself -- apparently the earlier models were so badly made that the failure rate was up near 50%. Our last fridge worked for a good 20 years, but my last Xbox? 6 months.

You can't really blame them when you didn't bother getting the extended warranty on a console that's been dogged by hardware failures since launch.

    Re: Broken Xbox slim
The only way is the Microsoft way, you can flash it and reboot the console, and there are many ways to do this over the internet if you had the will of looking, keep asking questions on hardware forums (overclockers UK is a start) and you will find a solution.

The slims are very reliable, and I have recently had a slim and kinect for a year with no problems but never used it as I was into PC's and PC gaming. Consoles never did it for me and I don't like paying a crap load for games when I can get them for free on the internet. (hint)

I have never paid for anything for software or games so I could not stand paying for games for a console that had a tenth of the graphics power of my computer (two 460's in SLI) I used it for iplayer for the big TV for a year and then sold it at cex.
