Advice on how to do muscle ups?
Hi guys,
I'm really getting into my fitness this summer and am doing a lot of rock climbing, bit of swimming and a lot of bar/pushup work. I am trying to train to do muscleups and was wondering if you guys have any advice on how to do them? I can do one arm then the other, but I'm having problems getting both arms above the bar in one go - I have a feeling i'm missing out on some technique. Can anyone here suggest how to do them and ideally link me to a good training video?
Thanks

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?Amen to that bro! I went climbing today again :P. Great fun! Didn't climb as hard as I would have liked though - my tendons are destroyed!(Original post by theandyguthrie)
Also climbing rules. -
Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?
My guess is that most people don't develop strength in the range of motion at the point the bar is between the chest and waist since pullups and dips don't really target that area. Exaggerated pullups would be a good idea, assisted by a machine if needed. It's more important to get into that range with assistance than to stay lower without assistance.
You can also try doing dumbbell pullovers on a steep decline as assistance work.Last edited by tooosh; 17-07-2012 at 22:40. -
Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups? It's all about your pull-ups. High pull-ups. Explosive pull-ups. Some dip strength is required, but it isn't as important.(Original post by rock_climber86)

Another tip is to do pull-ups where you pull yourself away from the bar (keep chest away), pulling in a C shaped path, not I shaped.
And since you aren't quite there yet, kip as much as possible.
This was me a while ago, but I got worse since then. Trying to get back into it.

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?great video man! going to the rock climbing gym in a sec. I'll try remember your arm motions and to do that!(Original post by TooEasy123)

Awesome work. Love the leg movement as you're going up too! I've never thought of that! Must give you some added momentum on the way up?

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?Yeah, momentum helps a lot lol. If I don't use momentum and go in upwards in an I shaped path, I get stuck. For example, like this:(Original post by rock_climber86)

I haven't seen that many people do it without momentum though, but I'm gonna try to do it eventually
. But hey, I never knew muscle-ups were involved in rock climbing lol. Never thought of that for some reason.
Good luck.
If you still can't do it today, there's quite a lot of tutorials on youtube I think, so just search them.
A few other things...
-thin bars make it easier
-practise negative muscle-ups (start from top and go down as slowly as possible)
-do deep dips (where you're almost falling into the pull-up)Last edited by TooEasy123; 20-07-2012 at 12:00. -
Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?just got back from the climbing wall. couldn't do it! I kept going up in an i-shape! Very frustrating! Can do all sorts of crazy **** but can't do muscle ups(Original post by TooEasy123)

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?I take it you know how to have your hands and wrists on the bar? It's just practise, do lot's of varied pull ups and dips to develop the explosive power you need. Remember you aren't just gonna get muscle ups overnight.(Original post by rock_climber86)

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?how do you put the hands? I think i've got the power but i cant turn into the bar. I get my arms into a horizontal lock position but can't turn into a vertical if that makes sense?(Original post by TheJ0ker)

Haha, it takes time, don't worry. Try swinging forwards and backwards a little bit... and when you are coming back towards the bar, that's when you should pull upwards. You can also try this from 90 degree arm position and it might make it easier.(Original post by rock_climber86)

I think he's talking about the false grip. That means you put your whole hand over the bar so part of your wrist is where the pressure is. This way you don't have to change your grip as you pull upwards. You don't have to do it like that though - my pull-ups are quite weak using that grip, so I just do it with a regular grip.
Next time just use as much legs as possible lol. trust me you'll get over, even if it's ugly looking
I saw a fat guy on youtube do it like that :P
From what you say, you have enough power to do them, it could just be technique letting you down. It's all about timing. You have to switch your grip over the bar at a certain point. If you leave it too late then you get to horizontal like you did, but can't seem to go vertical. Too early isn't good either
EDIT: ideally you want to be able to pull the bar to your stomach. with momentum i can do that, but without momentum i can only reach my mid-chest. so i need to practise them more too.Last edited by TooEasy123; 20-07-2012 at 18:36. -

Also, what kinda strength moves related to rock climbing can you do? Just curious.
I'm not too familiar on it, but I'm interested

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?I nearly did it. I can do pullups to my lower rib cage now. Working on the c-movement. I injured my knee climbing on sunday so am on crutches(Original post by TooEasy123)

. I stretched a ligament the hospital people said. No idea how long im' out for
.
sucks cos i was getting really strong this summer

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups? That sucks. Nice on the pull-ups though. Are you using your legs to get the height? If not, you should be there already to be honest. Don't rest completely. Do stuff that doesn't use your legs(Original post by rock_climber86)

I did a muscle-up with pretty much perfect form today.

Re: Advice on how to do muscle ups?nice one mate! you make it look so easy! I also noticed how you made your hand turn around! Also will the bar diameter make a difference. the bar i train on is quite big and my hand doesn't go completely around it. Also there is so much friction I find i can't turn on it when going up - it's like made of scaffolding(Original post by TooEasy123)
