York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decide
I have narrowed my offers down to York and Aston but have no idea which to go for. It is for Electonic Engineering at York and Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Aston.
Brimingham will be easier to get to, probably better nightlife being a bigger city as well. Plus Aston is in the top 20 of targeted universities by the largest employers. Not that it really matters to me since I don't plan on staying in the UK after my degree.
York is probably a nicer city and looks like a much nicer campus. As it is a campus uni the nightlife is probably what you make it anyway. Teaching quality seems better which is quite important however they only offer EE not EEE.
Any advice on which to go for? -
Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decide
I'd go for Aston because the degree is broader and they also offer other engineering disciplines which will allow for multi-discipline projects which I think make up an extremely important part of your university education. Plus I see Aston offer a four year MEng with a year spent in industry, so you get to do a year in industry without taking longer to start earning graduate money.

I am paying the stupid new fees and also doing a year 0. The fees for the year zero after taking away the bursaries:
York: £500
Aston: £8,500
Also, in my continuing years York give me a total of £2000 which I can either take off my fees making it £7000 a year or £2k in my pocket (travel money in the summer
)
Aston isn't anywhere near as good in terms of the funding as I'd only be eligible for about £3000 over the entire time I am there compared to £14500 at York.
York also allow 3years of study, placement and then the MEng year after. However I think I may want to do a MSc a few years after my BEng anyway
You're an idiot(Original post by IgaveUPdrink)

Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decideYou're an idiot who has the arrogance to think you know how good a potential student is by a post on an Internet forum, rather than York university admissions.(Original post by IgaveUPdrink)

They gave OP an offer, I'm pretty sure they know who is smart enough for their own course. -

I wouldn't bother wasting my time with this guy. After all it is the same person who believes King's College -(Original post by AspiringGenius)

is overrated because the names sounds good. -
Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decideOkay then that's a pretty big difference. If York's cheaper by that much I'd probably go there, even though Aston has more pros in terms of the course.(Original post by bestofyou)
just a few other important facts.

I also wouldn't bother doing an MS when you can just do the MEng and get all of the required academia out of the way. -

Just wondering, what do you mean by a year 0?? -
Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decideYeah I'd prefer EEE plus they also offer Mechanical and Chemical as you said. Though the funding is a bit of downer. Plus the campus at Aston doesn't look as nice.(Original post by Smack)

Fair enough I'll take that into consideration when I need to decide that. Is BEng/MEng a global thing btw? I've seen somewhere saying that international students that don't plan on staying on the UK to work and don't need IET chartership can just do the BEng? -
Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decideFoundation year. After this year I only go into first year. I had the grades to get into my courses but not the subjects unfortunatly therefore had to go for EE with foundation. I just say year 0 because if you just say foundation year some people confuse it with foundation degree with is completely different.(Original post by bahjat93)

Only for one year though. The 2k in the subsequent years can be given to me in cash or taken off my fees making it 7k fees a year or 50:50(Original post by Aeschylus)
No comment on which university is better but an 8 grand cheaper course and money over the summer seems like a good deal. -
Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decidegreat input.(Original post by Bill_Gates)
Aston is a far better uni than York.
Why? -
Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decide
This should give you some good statistics and facts to compare the Unis

Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decideThe whole "undergraduate masters" thing is unique to the UK. Most other countries you're good to go after a bachelors. And that's how it should be here to be honest. But alas it isn't so you're better off just doing the MEng straight away.(Original post by bestofyou)

Re: York or Aston? Please help less that a week to decideWell the two grand extra off my fees per year/ extra maintenance loan money would be pretty nice as well. Free money is always good(Original post by bestofyou)

. I was looking at York to do my Electrical Engineering but they don't offer a year in industry so i didn't apply but i regret it now
.
I'm doing near enough the same degree as you so i'd recommend York over Aston just because of the prestige, York is a very good university.
