Hello again guys!
Just figured out how to use Sky Drive so you can just view the file and download it directly to your PC rather than having to mess around with emails
Let me know if you have any problems.

Once the checklist has loaded up, just click "File" then "Download a copy" to your computer to edit where necessary.
Enjoy and Good luck everyone!
I was planning on some clothes, my laptop, pans and a blanket.
Useful list, though.
Thanks.Last edited by Formerly Helpful_C; 18-07-2012 at 02:37. -
Re: Uni checklistIn UK universities, generally all the bedrooms in halls of residence are individually lockable so when you're going out you can lock your door. Printers, scanners, lamps etc. aren't particularly stealable things anyway. People would be more likely to steal things like iPads, Kindles, iPhones, fancy laptops... It would be kinda hard to smuggle a printer/scanner out of someones room without looking seriously shifty and being challenged by flatmates I imagine and lamps aren't expensive.(Original post by Gigaunit)
I am not going to university yet but I have a question, on your checklist you mention printer, scanner, lamp, etc.
I am not familiar with how uk universities are (overseas), but aren't you worried of stuff getting stolen or damaged by other people?
And last question, with all that hardware, your suitcase would be of over 30kg. Unless your university was at car-travelling distance, how did you transport your stuff?
I don't think you need to worry about bringing a lot of hardware over though. You could get away with just bringing your laptop and an external hard drive perhaps. I expect using the printer in the library would be more convenient than having to lug a printer around airports twice a year. You could always buy a lamp for £5> when you get here and the same goes for things like kettles. If I was in your position I'd probably just bring all my clothes (+shoes and accessories), a couple of my favourite books, personal items like favourite toiletries, small gadgets like mp3 player/iPod, sentimental things like photos, my laptop and important documents. I'd buy bed linen, towels and kitchen stuff when I got here.
Check out a company called Argos. All major towns and cities in the UK seem to have at least one so you're bound to have one nearby to your university and they sell everything you're likely to need at good prices.
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Home.htm
Here's an example list:
'Bed in a bag' set containing duvet, 2 pillows and a mattress protector - £9.99
Colour match aqua (blue) duvet cover set - £6.99
Value range 20 piece kitchen essential starter set - £19.99
Value range 12 piece white dinner set - £4.99
Set of drinking glasses - £2.99
6 piece towel set - £5.99
Total: £50.94
I doubt you'd get everything you need for under that price anywhere else and any money you'd save by buying everything at home would be outweighed by the cost and hassle of transporting it I should think. -
Re: Uni checklistThank you(Original post by littleone271)
Great checklist! Do you need a kettle though? I thought universities normally supplied those in the kitchens? Also.. You forgot the bottle opener :P
When I made the list, I didn't know what was going to be in my flat and I'm staying in private halls so I wasn't sure what was being provided
: I know now that I'm not going to need it anyway. It needs to be updated again.
Oh crumbs, so I have. Mustn't forget the essentials now

You're welcome. Good luck

Most of it I'll keep in my room anyway so it should be safe enough I hope.
My uni is about three hours drive in a car so my dad is giving me a lift down with all my stuff

Re: Uni checklistOh it's unbelievable how much stuff we need! Stuff you wouldn't even think of like towels, a bin, a doorstop, cheese grater, chopping board... You need to think of everything you use at home and everything you'd need to cook food that you eat. I'm also taking a clothes rail because I don't think I'll fit all my clothes in the wardrobe lol(Original post by Formerly Helpful_C)

Re: Uni checklist
It probably sounds really paranoid but on recomendation from one of my friends who has just finished her first year, she told to pack some tupperware boxes and sticky labels to put my food in to go in the fridge. She found it stopped people knicking her food (as it stops the 'I didn't know it was yours' excuse or food being moved and not being able to find it as it was all together in one container. It probably sounds a little strange but I think its a pretty good idea that I will definatley be using

Re: Uni checklistNo it's not paranoid at all(Original post by laura1234)

I bought a whole heap of Tupperware boxes today so I'll get some sticky labels as well. Hopefully it won't come to that but better safe than sorry.

Re: Uni checklistOh I'm taking my printer(Original post by laura1234)
Is anyone thinking of taking a printer? I'm not sure whether to take one or not as the rooms at the uni I'm (hopefully) are quite small and I already have lots of stuff!! Also is it just worth using the printer credits in the library instead?? Anyone wondering the same thing?
I've got a laser printer which I use for art a lot so I'm taking it with me. Plus it means I won't have to mess around trying to get printer credits at uni

Re: Uni checklistYeahh thats a good point, I may take one. It sounds like I'm going to be hanging stuff out of the window to make room for everything at this rate, and thats before I've even started on clothes!(Original post by Miss Trololol)

Re: Uni checklistYou do have your own room in university, unless you are staying in a hostel... I think you'll be fine.(Original post by Gigaunit)

Re: Uni checklistDO IT! Honestly, your flatmates might seem like normal people but living with someone for a year brings out all sorts of quirks. Like stealing peas, or one breast of chicken but then leaving the other one in the microwave so you can't find it until it rots so much you can't breathe in the kitchen anymore :P. I loved my flat but one person can really throw the dynamics. If you have weird things with butter, like one of my friends where it can't have bits hacked out & needs to be smooth, definitely make it clear that no one should be using yours. If you sort out ground rules you will be fine!(Original post by laura1234)

Also I'd recommend taking a masher and garlic crusher. Everyone thinks oh, I'm not going to use them, but if you want a casserole & mash it's obv handy and everyone was always wanting to use my garlic crusher because no one had thought about it!
Take a printer! Honestly, if you're doing essays and you're up till 2 in the morning and it's due at 12 noon, but you have a lecture at 11, you are not going to want to get up at ridiculous o'clock to go down to the library just to print it off: there'll be guaranteed queues on deadline day I promise you!(Original post by laura1234)

I super regret not having a printer last year!
