Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
Or do you just stop reading it and save yourself the struggle?

One of my old English teachers used to tell us to read at least one third of a book before you decide it's not to your taste. I rarely finish books I find dull if I've nothing else to read, or if the quality of the writing far surpasses the quality of the story, or if it's incredibly short. I would definitely stop reading a book if it's annoying me, especially if the writing style is poor or the plot unbelievable. Otherwise it's just a waste of time to be reading a book that doesn't hook me in, whether through the story or the writing or both. For me, a book needs to have something to draw me to it and make me want to read it, otherwise there's no enjoyment and I can't take anything away from the book and the experience of reading it other than irritation at how I wasted my time.

Yes, all the time. It might take a while (and sit on the shelf while I read other stuff), but there's very few books I haven't eventually finished. It's like I feel an obligation to at least finish the story, no matter how crap it is.

I feel like that too. I might not read it word by word (so might skim long dialogue or descriptions) but I have to finish it as I want to know what happens, even if it's crap.

No I just move on. If I force myself to read a book I don't like I usually forget everything apart from the fact that I hated the book

Yeah sometimes. It bothers me if I just leave it... I feel compelled to know the ending of the books I read for some reason.

I always tell myself that I'll finish a book regardless of how boring or uninteresting it is. Inevitably though I find myself abandoning said books and moving onto to something a little more interesting

I make myself finish every book I start. I've only stopped reading a book halfway through once, and I later tried reading it again and managed to finish it!
Although to be honest, I can pretty much enjoy all books, however crap they are. Its pretty rare that I don't like a book. Maybe I'm just lucky with the books I buy!

I'm the same. I always feel that the book might get better or that I need to finish it.

I used to feel this way, but it changed when I read Ian McEwan's Saturday a few years back. It was such an atrocious pile of bilge I broke my rule and stopped reading. And ever since then, I've found it easy to just give up.

Yep same for me, I always finish them even if I find them really crap. Which is particularly annoying at the moment as I recently got a Kindle and thought it would be a great idea to download loads of cheap and free books...turns out they're all crap so I've only read one good book on my Kindle so far!

Yeah I do this, it's annoying and I can't help myself. Im currently reading a really boring book and im about 1/3 of the way in and I can't wait to finish it so I can start on my other book (which looks much more interesting).

I've only ever had one book which I found boring and couldn't get into, that was Eragon. I never did finish it and I think I gave my copy of it away to charity a while ago.

I always read the first 100 pages before giving up if I don't like it. Life is short and there are too many good books in the world; why waste your time on the ones that are ****?

It depends, if its annoying I might force myself to finish it but if its boring then I don't bother because I can't concentrate long enough to get it finished/remember what the hell is going on. Reading a bad book can put me off reading altogether for a while

I like to finish every book I start but I don't force myself. If I truly don't care about the characters or what is going to happen and I've read a significant amount to have definitely made up my mind then I just abandon them. I don't see the point in reading it just for the sake of saying I've read it, I like to read things that I enjoy.

Generally, I like to finish reading a book even if it takes ages. Although if it's really bad I won't bother.

If I'm recommended a book by someone, I feel compelled to finish reading it because I want to discover the same greatness in the book that they found.
