Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
If it can be read, it can be discussed here.

Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
well more recently i was given a book by a friend for my birthday, i can't stand it but she keeps asking if i've finished it and i'm too nice a person to tell her i don't like it and she's not going to believe i've read it all until i've read it all and can discuss it, so far i've been giving work as an excuse for not having finished yet... otherwise no, i usually just stop reading.

I'm stuck on the last Eragon book, Inheritance, and it's so awful I cannot force myself to continue sat page 100. I really want to know how the series ends, but I was tempted by Terry Pratchett's "Snuff" and amnow reading that- the higher quality of writing by TP is a huge relief :P

Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
I have to finish them, no matter how tedious they're becoming. I had one like that recently, I don't know what I expected but it was about a French feminist writer/philosopher/critic etc etc and because some of it was in French my mind just fuzzed over. I finished the book though, I think I'll pick it up again in a few years when I've grown up some more. Maybe maturity will make it easier to read.

I felt like this with 50 shades of grey because everyone hyped about it so much. I read it over 5 days just to get it over with and then read summaries of the other two books just so I would know what happened. I always feel obliged to finish what I started.

Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?Twilight isn't quite as awful as I make out, but I'm more of a Harry Potter kinda girl. Agreed. New Moon was awfully dreary as well. I felt all the whole Twilight had this really dull, depressing kind of tone.(Original post by AquilaXenon)
Yes I quite agree with that book! Though I felt that the first book did have potential, I read all four books and if there is any book that I wished I hadn't wasted my time reading it was Breaking Dawn. By far the worst book I have ever read.
But still, I feel if it's been recommended then I have a duty to finish it so that you can actually discuss it and even more so if you aren't enjoying it because then you can say exactly why you didn't like it.
Yep, you're right. It saves you from being one of those annoying people who think books are rubbish /without even reading them/... -
Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?I'm definitely with you on Harry Potter! Good old JK as the Doctor would say. They are very depressing, and while I'm all up for a bit of tragedy/heartbreak/apocalypse in a book, there has to be light-hearted moments or a sense that there is actually a point in it. With the Twilight series I felt that Stephenie Meyer often took the easy road with the plot (There comes a time when you have to choose between what is right and what is easy as Dumbledore would say) and the characters were all two-dimensional, you barely got to know anything about them at all.(Original post by EarthGirl)

What's worse than thinking a book is bad when you haven't read it is thinking a book is bad based on the film... -
Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
i try to finish books that i start. im always pretty hopeful that itll get better somehow, i just need to give it more time. theres probably only a handful of books that iv given up on - one being trainspotting as i loved the film but i read about half of it and i just couldnt get into the book and the style of writing at all and just had to call it a day, im determined to give it another go at some point though. i think there are only about a handful of books iv not finished, and i dont remember what they were, but im pretty good at picking books that i will enjoy and people i know are pretty good at recommending books to me that are to my taste.

Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
Yes, whenever i pick up a book and start reading, i cannot put it down untill its finished. Usually, i end up staying up all night, or skipping meals just to see it through. Thats only when its a book i like, when i come across ones that bore me, i still have to finish them, but i give myself a break and limit myself to a few chapters a night.
I hate leaving a book unfinished, i know some people like switching books half way through, but not me. I love the satisfaction you get when you've just finished reading a book or series, but when it's a book you've really enjoyed, your overcome with sadness that it's now complete and ready to collect dust on the bookshelf

Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
Yes I do indeed get this feeling as well. It's frustrating because I know that all I have to do is stop reading and close the book but I just can't force myself to do it. I always fear that on the next page there'll be a sudden plot exciting twist, so I can't get myself out of the mentality that I'll be missing out on something. It's even worse when it's a book that I was given as a present. I'll feel like I'm personally offending the person who gave me it then. I do hope though that in the future there'll come a point when I'll just say "stuff it!" Life's too short!

Re: Do you ever feel that you HAVE TO finish a boring/annoying book you started?
I really hate giving up on books, so I'll try my hardest. I'm a fast reader anyway, so even if I don't like it, it will normally only take up a couple of days of my time. It's quite rare that I give up on a book completely, although I probably should learn to give up on the ones I'm finding really tedious!
