Does the Quran command women to stay at home and protect their charm?
I've just been listening to a debate on BBC Asian Network regarding the high number of Pakistani and Bangladeshi women not in employment, 1 in 5 to be precise, in comparison to 1 in 14 white women.
A man rang the show and said the Qur'an commands women to stay at home and protect their charm, is this true? I thought Muhammed's (PBUH) wife was a very entrepreneurial and was a very successful business woman. Does this man not know what he is talking about? I'm Muslim and am interested in knowing this. Thanks.

The Prophet's (PBUH) first wife was a business woman, was she not?

This link may help to explain what that man was talking about.

Its permissible for a woman to work, so long as she does not negate her responsibility of looking after her family by doing so.

No the Qur'an doesn't command woman to stay at home. Did the radio station quote verses to back it up?

A man rang the radio station, he didn't quote a verse though.
