Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking?
This should be posted in careers and employment sub forum.
I decided to post this thread here so I can remain anonymously, hope I don't get a warning.
I have been unemployed since early June, and have been unemployed for around 6 weeks now.
For those who have graduated for University and currently unemployed, how long have you been unemployed for? or how long did it take for you to find employment?
Was there a certain period being unemployed, before you start to get stressed out and panic, due to jobs rejection and not finding work.
At the moment, for me, 6 weeks unemployed ain't too bad. I think if I can't found work in around 6 months I would start to panic. If I still can't find work after a year, then I would be seriously concerned with my health, finances and whether I can find work.

I think it also depends on when you're counting from... I mean I graduated last week, are we counting from graduation? My uni ended on like the 9/06 and that's when I moved back home. Count then? Results came out on 13/07... I like to make myself feel better and say that graduation is the starting point of 'real life', since that was the "official" end to the degree.
In that sense I've only been unemployed for 5 days... doesn't sound bad at all when you put it that way!
In any case, people say you should wait 6 months for something to come up whilst applying. Not sure how relevant that is, but there you go. -
Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking?
I was unemployed for 7 1/2 months before I got my current temp job but I knew I had work starting in September at around the 5 month mark. I ended up getting very depressed as a result of not having anything to get up for but that just encouraged me to keep submitting the applications and CVs. Unfortunately it's a tough job market out there. Just keep your chin up and try not to lose faith in your abilities.

Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking? It was around 8 months before getting a job and the run up was disheartening after sending out your CV to so many places and not getting any response. Although accepting that no reply is the norm for a rejection then you feel less bad about it. Every time no reply came in, I'd look at my CV, tweak some things and then send it out again repeatedly until it started getting some hits which is where it is now.(Original post by Anonymous)

Some of my friends have been unemployed for upwards of 12 months and they're not that fussed either because they don't know what they want to do and so applying for jobs that they don't want isn't an appealing process.
Conversely, my sister's been unemployed for about 4 months and she's freaking out breaking down and all sorts.
A lot of it is down to how good you are handling your emotions and approaching the problem. There's a bit of luck involved because if people in charge of recruitment like you then you'll get chances at posts that would, in normal circumstance, be inaccessible. -
Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking?
depends how much effort I'm putting into finding a job. I've been unemployed since the 10th June technically, because that's when I finished my degree. However, I haven't been putting huge amounts of effort into finding a job, as I'm sort of just having a bit of a break. I'd be a bit concerned once I've had like 10 interviews and still no luck...

Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking?
It's less about how long, more about how many times are you missing out. If you make 10 applications that you think you have a good fit for, have relevant experience etc and you don't get invited to interview, you need to re-address how you are writing your CV/application form.
If you are getting invitations to interview, but after 3 or 4 haven't got a job offer, then you need to re-assess your interview style.
Don't forget that for graduates, your university careers centre will normally continue to give support and advice for at least a couple of years after graduation.
Quality of application will win out over quantity, so don't focus on making as many applications as possible, focus on making a tailored application to jobs you have a strong fit with.
Having said all that, in the current market you shouldn't panic until it's been 6 months. Or better still, for those who are in a position to do this - don't wait until you graduate, get applying for things at the start of your final year. -
Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking? It's nice to have a break tbh, I've applied for loads of summer jobs but I got rejected, so I'm looking at ones starting September as that's when I move into my new flat. If it had been 6 months I'd panic too. Are you on jobseekers yet? Because you can go on it straight away after uni.(Original post by Anonymous)

Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking? You can get advice on how to answer questions more effectively. You can get advice on working out why a panel is asking the questions it is asking, and what sort of answer they are looking for. You can learn how to control your nerves and improve your presentational skills. You can learn how to give more concise, professional answers. There are a number of things you can do to improve your interview techniques, that don't require a major change of personality!(Original post by Bloodbath)
How exactly do u change your interview style? Its not like u can change who u are i.e can't get a personality change -
Re: Graduates - How long unemployed before you start panicking?Simple things like not hunching over, not going 'errrr' when thinking, not speaking until 100% sure of what you're going to say, making eye contact, having a firm handshake instead of the 'limp fish' and generally not spazzing out because it's a job interview.(Original post by Bloodbath)

Interviews are like exams. You just need to approach them correctly to get the marks. Clever people get it right first time in the exam hall, people who are naturally likeable and comfortable socially get it right first time in the interview room.Last edited by Irrelevance; 18-07-2012 at 20:43.
