Tips on waking up earlier?
Hi guys,
For the last few years I've had what I'd call a problem, at least, with waking up early. I have absolutely no idea why, but I just find that nothing seems to wake me up at the minute. I set two alarms on my ipod and put it right by my pillow, and even have an alarm clock which blasts out the radio and wakes up the whole house except for me.
I'm not entirely sure what it is, I think I'm quite a deep sleeper and usually talk (supposedly) a lot in my sleep. It's really annoying that I can't seem to wake up naturally early like some people do and that none of my alarms etc seem to wake me up. It means that my mum (I'm 16, so still at home) usually has to come and wake me up, and I'd just rather be able to myself.
So has anyone got any good tips for me? I've tried leaving the blinds open at night but there's a really bright street light that shines into my room when they're open and it stops me from sleeping.
I'd be grateful for any advice anyone could give me.
Thanks

Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
I have the same problem, i find it difficult waking up early, and tend to crawl out of bed between 9-11am.
Maybe ask someone to wake you up? That's what i've had to do, now every morning my sister comes and annoys me by spraying water over me, throwing ice cubes at me untill i wake up, or pulling the duvet off me. This usually end with alot of shouting and some minor threats but it gets me out of bed
Also, if you drink a lot of caffine and tend to stay up late, that should be dealt with first, thats the problem i have, i can't sleep before 2-3am so i tend to wake up late.
Another thing, the first few times you wake up early, you'll feel tired, grumpy etc. Jump in the shower straight away to wake youself up a bit.
You could also try drinking lots of water at night, that way you'll have to wake up to pee

Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
If you're saying you dont wake up at all till ages, maybe try leaving the blinds open at least partially. We're supposed to wake up naturally with daylight - hence all those daylight imitation light/alarm clock things.. maybe get one of those if you cant leave the blinds open?

As I said in the OP, my Mum usually comes in and wakes me up in the morning in a similar fashion to your sister. Sometimes, when I wake up at say, 12pm, when I next see my mum I'm like 'Why didn't you wake me up?!
' When it turns out she did and I actually told her to leave me be, which I have no recollection of. I'd just like to be able to be independent about it.
I think firstly I'll need to sort out my going to bed etc. -
Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
it sounds like it wouldn't work but heres what i do:
I could never get up before half 7, so I flicked my clock and my phone forwards half an hour and set an alarm for half seven.
that means that my morning (stupid) brain looks at the clock and sees half seven but its actually seven so i get up
it wouldnt help if you cant actually wake up but it works to get you up instead of snoozing

This happens to everyone naturally, for me on college days i wake up at 8 ish, but you need a motivation to wake you up early like imagine you have a plane to catch at 10 so sometimes in the morning you suddenly think ****! And rush out thats the kind of motivation you'll to wake up early as theres something important you need to do

Re: Tips on waking up earlier?Yeah, I've tried leaving the blinds open a couple of times and achieved varied success. The only problem is, as I said, the streetlight outside really disturbs me as it shines directly into my room. I prefer going to sleep in a completely dark room.(Original post by facetious)

As for the alarm clocks, can't say I've ever even heard of them!
I'll definitely check it out though, thanks!

Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
Try drinking plenty of water before you go to bed. It'll have to get up early at some point. Don't drink stimulants like coffee so that your body doesn't crash and sleep in. Also, make a routine. Go to bed at around the same time each night so your body expects to wake up at a certain time. Moreover, give yourself good reasons to get up early and think about it before you go to sleep. I often tell myself "I need to be up at . . ." and it works. Make your mornings productive so it doesn't feel a big deal to get out of bed.

Re: Tips on waking up earlier? If you can somehow get a lamp to turn on with your alarm/any bright light that might help by stimulating the whole light thing.(Original post by benpearson1)

Re: Tips on waking up earlier? This is probably true to be honest. It does vary quite a bit in the holidays, anything from 10pm-2am (being extreme but those are generally the boundaries).
Although, even when I'm at school I seem to have a bit of a problem and I go to bed at more or less the same time (10:30-11). -
Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
I'm a deep sleeper too...I remember when there was this 'mini earthquake' in the UK during the night and I slept through the whole thing! The only solution I have is a cat - the only thing that wakes me up early is my cat purring in my face at 7am!
I take forever to get to sleep as well - I go to bed at like 10 or 11 and I won't get to sleep until midnight or after. I drink a lot of coffee during the day though, so maybe this is why I find it hard to get to sleep quickly...If you have a lot of caffeine it might be keeping you up and thus waking up later? Also, try going to bed a little earlier every now and then to see if it has any effect on how early you wake up?

Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
Well best tips I can give you are:
Stick to a sleeping pattern
No caffeine/sugar a few hours before bed
Try avoiding TV and the such just before going to bed - read a book
Do some light exercise before bed - walk the dog etc
Be a bit more active during the day IE no 10-12 hour gaming sessions

Re: Tips on waking up earlier?Haven't had a 12 hour gaming session for a while.. but I can never rule it out indefinitely(Original post by Sir Master of Bate)

Especially not with FM 2012 and the new Halo out this year
But cheers

Re: Tips on waking up earlier? Will probably do this as well, thanks.(Original post by Pink Boy)
Try going for a run at 4-7pm for 30-45mins.
I find it helps give you a good quality sleep, so you wake up fresh instead of wanting to continually snooze.
Ties in nicely actually as I've been meaning to start running to improve my fitness for the next football and hockey season(s). -
Re: Tips on waking up earlier?
It depends of your psychology, if you could control yourself as some people can, you could wake up in the time you need.
Some people may sleep for a long time.
