Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
Has anyone here been racially abused of being of irish descent, at least people of any significant irish heritage??
I have, I was born in England to Irish parents and lived till I was 14, moved 'back' to Ireland and have lived here since, I still speak with an English accent.
When I was living in England, I got a lot of abuse from people for being of Irish descent. I couldn't be English because I wasn't of the "anglo saxon" race etc. People were very strict about this.
Whereas everyone I knew supported England, got geared for things like Euro 96 with Alan Shearer posters on their walls, I had posters of Packie Bonner, Paul Mcgrath etc and was sad because Ireland didn't qualify.
Now I speak with an English accent and people tell me they find it strange when I consider myself Irish, "Why are you not English?" and then I tell about my story about not being English because I wasn't racially so, I'll give you some examples:
- A friends father (who was a paratrooper in NI) refused to let me into his house once because I wore a Republic of Ireland top.
- My music teacher used to always speak to me in an Irish accent (even though I spoke with an English one) and wind me he said to me "so where have you guys got you're caravans parked then" whole class started laughing.
- My mum got into a fight with another mother, who called my mum an Irish whore, Irish bitch, we f*ck off to where we came from etc.
- I was repeatedly told to bugger off back to Ireland, suspected that I was an illegal immigrant and all this crap "is you're dad part of the IRA" blah blah blah.
Anyone else here of significant Irish heritage ever suffer a lot of racial abuse before?? -
Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
I had a Northern Irish step-grandad who'd moved in with my gran on mum's side up in Arbroath so I dunno if that had any affect, or my parents and my experience had been naturally not been abusive to people not 'Anglo-Saxon'. My dad seems to believe my gran on his side may have an Irish link but I've not yet been there visiting anyone, though went to Dublin on a school trip.
That sounds pretty awful, especially for a teacher to do that. It seems retarded to attack someone for not being 'pure' Saxon. Good luck finding anyone in the whole of the UK who are pure Germanic/Celtic.
I can't understand white on white racism. I mean we all look the same. This sort of thing happens in Asia and Africa as well.
I know we generally do the whole 'Englishman, Irishman, Scotsman' jokes and have the Irishman as the butt of it but there's a difference between that and taunting someone. -
Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
No, not really. Not from English people. although I used to be quite proud of it and sort of accidently made an enemy of one of the people on my halls. He didn't think I should be proud of being Southern Irish after the Troubles (he was from NI) and he talked about being shot at by Catholic snipers and his family dying and stuff and I was like "Yeah, well my family died too, some of them were in the IRA" and it was totally the wrong thing to say. He seemed to hold me accountable for all the problems in Ireland after that. But whatever. We were never going to be friends anyway.

Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
Stop whining.
So someone who served in NI wouldn't let you in his house I'm sure there are Irish people who would not let me in their house, some people hold prejudices, deal with it.
Sounds like your teacher was just making a joke, its like when i visit my mates in Scotland and get called an English C*** or a Kentish C*** its hardly like they're trying to drive me out.
My mum got in to an argument in Woolworths when i we lived in NI after some lovely lady spat on a 5 year old me and called me a Little British Bastard, It was really my own fault, i mean how dare i walk up to a stranger and say 'excuse me I've lost my mummy'
To be honest no one gives a **** if someones Irish, hell half of the British people would probably automatically think 'cool'
No one except far right combat 18 style thugs give a **** about someone being anglo saxon or whatever, i call bull****.
You just sound like an attention seeking **** stirrer. -

Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??I am part Irish on my mothers side. Never recieved any form of abuse for it. But then again i cant really consider myself to be legitimately "Irish" because i was born in Britain and i have been emersed thoroughly in British culture all my life. Culturally im about as Irish as i am Chinese.

Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??Yeah but you're not racially anglo saxon (or at least fully) that was some of bullsh!t I heard when I was in England. I always told by my local town that I HAD to consider myself Irish anything else would have been outright stupid, and that I would be always be a foreigner/immigrant.(Original post by Greenlaner)

Also my parents told me I was Irish and so there was no question, even though I was born and speak with a very strong English accent still to do this day heh heh.

Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
There's a bit of teasing and distasteful comments about Irish people due to the Rangers-Celtic sectarianism, but nowhere near as bad as the stuff English people get. In my experience, people are not racist to start off with, they are racist if they already dislike you and they want to say something that will get to you, or that they think is funny.
If you support Ireland and live in England then obviously you're going to get picked on. But honestly, anyone actually being 'racist' against Irish people is clearly an extremist idiot. Not even the BNP think that Irish people are a seperate race, considering Scots and Welsh people are all of Celtic descent too. -

Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??Anyone who says such a thing is clearly a moron who is completely ignorant of history, and as such their opinions are invalid.(Original post by Sharpshooter)

The Anglo Saxons were not a race, they were a culture, and a culture that has been dead for hundreds and hundreds of years. Nobody today is an Anglo Saxon. English society today is absolutely nothing like the ancient Anglo Saxon society, not in anyway shape or form and the average moron who makes bull**** claims like "your not English if your not pure Anglo Saxon" probably doesnt even have the first clue about how Anglo Saxon society operated.
Its highly unlikely any English person today is of pure Anglo Saxon or even Germanic descent. At the very least they a probably a mix of Germanic, Celtic and Nordic.Last edited by Greenlaner; 18-07-2012 at 01:34. -

Strong grammar, bro.
OP: Didn't you make this thread the other week? -
Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??'Like everyone in England are purely'(Original post by M1011)
What's wrong with her grammar? Made perfect sense.
That makes perfect sense to you? Yet, people are surprised at the decline in English comprehension.
It should be: 'It's not as if everyone in England is purely Anglo-Saxon anyway'. -
Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??They weren't grammatical errors. He simply typed it as he would speak that sentence. Pick up on the sub-text, it was comical, you're revised version has none of that humour.(Original post by Formerly Helpful_C)

Seems you're obsessing over minor insignificant points, such as using the word him instead of her! Stop picking on my lack of English comprehension anyway, you're just being racist because I is Irish init. Geddit? Sub-text. -
Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
I have quite an interesting heritage because I'm quarter Irish (RoI) due to my maternal grandmother and I'm half Northern Irish due to my Dad. The RoI side is Catholic and the NI side is protestant so it's not really surprising that I'm good at arguing lol. I've never really experienced racism but I have experienced bigotry. It's constantly a case of being on one side or the other over there and there are so many things they pick on like the way people pronounce their 'H's ("aitch" or "haitch), whether you say Derry or London derry etc. Really annoying... I just stick to the Catholic side because they seem to be the nice ones lol

Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??
Op, you have created an identical thread to this in the past few weeks so did it not receive sufficient responses?

No, having Irish heritage albeit I doubt the authenticity because I guess we all have mixed backgrounds as a result of the plantation, I have never received abuse just good humoured give and take about accent and drinking etc. -
Re: Anyone Here Been Racially Abused Of Being Of Irish Descent??Are you sure about that? Last time I went there it was infested with arabs and blacks.(Original post by Benniboi1)
Everybody here in Birmingham seems to be of Irish decent so here it's weird to not have anyone in your family that's Irish. St.Patricks day is the best day of the year by a mile!
