Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?
Discussion for A-Level students and for those choosing their A-Level subjects.

Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?Getting an A in English language would be better than getting a C or a D in English lit. Don't take subjects just because they're considered "good" to have because if you don't enjoy them then you won't do as well if you were taking one you really liked.(Original post by mgd108)
Thanks, how about if English Language on option 4 was changed to Literature?
Personally 4 is the best in my opinion because I love English language and Psychology, and I also really like maths
Geography is respected subject also. What else i really like about this is that all the subjects aren't super difficult
Maths (1)
Geography (1)
English lang (2)
Psychology (2)
(1) = Suitable for most courses at uni. Preffered subjects
(2) = Suitable for relevant courses at uni/Limits what you can do at university
So it's nicely balanced

Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these? Are you talking about going straight into a career or what university courses could you get onto?(Original post by mgd108)
What kind of jobs would each set of A Levels open up to me? -
Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these? That's not what English Language is about at all! Just for example of what my course is like i'll be looking at:(Original post by Ellie_May :))
I think number 3 is the best
but then i want to take something geography/environment related in future so geography and geology give that type of field open to you. Plus english is good because it gives you the skills for writing those long essays in exams.
I take English Lit, and it is better than english lang because it is more respected by uni's, and is much more interesting to analyse books rather than comment on authors use of elipses etc.
Plus you have to comment a little on use of language in english lit anyway.
How language is structure for a variety of purposes
How peoples identities center around how they use language
How gender affects the use of language
How language is used to express power
How and why children acquire both spoken and written language
How and why English language has come into being and evolved over time.
And i'll also write my own story.
So commenting on punctuation isn't really what it's about.
Plus you'll look at a variety of media. Not just novels as you would in English lit. You'll look at speeches, adverts, articles etc. -
Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?IMO 1 is the worst and 2/4 is the best(Original post by mgd108)
1) Applied Business, English Literature, Psychology, Sociology
2) Maths, Spanish, Psychology, Geography
3) Geology, English Literature, Psychology, Geography
4) English Language, Maths, Psychology, Geography
Which of 1, 2, 3 and 4 is best and which is worst?
Thaaaanks

Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?
I'd say 4 is best, 1 is worst because sociology and applied business are both "soft subjects" where as 4 has a good combination
but really unless you have a specific course in mind that you need certain subjects for the best combination is what you're going to get the best results in! -
Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?
I'd say option 2 is your best: good range of good subjects. At the end of the day though it depends on what grades you think you can get, what you will enjoy and what you wish to do (the latter being hardest as you say you don't know what you want to do).
I'd rather have straight As in 'soft' subjects than straight Us in further maths, maths, chemistry and physics, for example.

Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these? In terms of university options: 2>4>3>1(Original post by mgd108)
1) Applied Business, English Literature, Psychology, Sociology
2) Maths, Spanish, Psychology, Geography
3) Geology, English Literature, Psychology, Geography
4) English Language, Maths, Psychology, Geography
Which of 1, 2, 3 and 4 is best and which is worst?

In terms of my personal preference for the subjects: 2>4>3>1 -
Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?
If i was a university looking at an application with any of these combinations I wouldnt be overally exstatic.
The best combination out of the subjects given would be:
English literature, Maths, Spanish, and Geography(Chemistry or History would be better). -
Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these?
Depends what you want to do. It's foolish to just delineate one of those sets as best.
If, for example, you wanted to study linguistics number 4 would be preferable as English Language provides a good foundation to the study of the subject at a higher level. Contrarily, if you wanted to study Geography, number 2 would be your best bet.
In terms of general suitability, number 1 is worst. Offering both applied business and sociology severely tarnishes an application to universities as they are not considered to be hard enough. -
Re: Best and worst set of A Levels out of these? What a misconceived understanding of English Language. I can assure you that while 'elipses [sic]' can be an interesting element of a text to analyse, the study of English Language extends much further than that. Additionally, in English language, you are rewarded for introducing ideas pertaining to the study of English Literature. It's not only literature that does that.(Original post by Ellie_May :))

Language is an important study, identifying the ways in which children acquire language; the nuances of different gender-combinations in conversation; how different mediums of language facilitation affect language (Internet, face-to-face, telephone...). It is stupid to disregard the subject based on a pure misunderstanding of it - I am aware that literature offers skills in analysis and appreciate, however, do not study it an therefore will not form a judgement of it.
By the way, if I were to analyse your use of Language, I definitely wouldn't have expected you to be a student of English. Possession forms are misused, spelling is wrong. Sort it out ... -
Change option four langaguge to lit and they are a great set!!(Original post by mgd108)

Also, is Spanish valued greater than English Lit?
