We just recently bought a LCD TV, quite happy with it. LED was a bit too expensive. There are always going t be new stuff coming out, we just cant afford to upgrade it to the best that is out there; unless you are really rich.

Thing is the LEDs dont improve the picture quality unless there direct and not edge ones.

I believe LCD tv screens use Cold Cathode Fluorescent (CCFL)

Whilst LED tv's use an LCD screen with Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) either around the edge or back panel instead of CCFL.

After all this time Plasma is still superior overall for picture quality especially if you are into sport.

Indeed LED tv has replaced LCD tv however it all depends on if you want the best picture quality going or sleek/slim bezeled designed screen to wether or not you consider Plasma or LED.
Also when it comes to picture quality you need to look at colour and the blacks, for some reason people think bright coloured pictures are the best but all that is showing is the TV's inability to produce a true black. You will notice when comparing TV's skin colour especially around the face can have a lot of depth and shading on one TV and then lack of detail on the next TV.

Manufacturers are now pushing Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) and I assume Plasma will still remain alongside this new technology.
I would not concern yourself with OLED at this moment in time.

Panasonic and Samsung are the two manufacturers to really focus on, though that is not to say disregard others as there maybe a bargin around the corner! Panasonic really are the leaders when it comes to picture quality and Samsung arent far behind.

If you are intending to purchase a warranty/guarantee may I suggest you look at Richer Sounds.
    http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ams-ue40eh5000 £390 + £38.95 for 5yr Guarantee
    http://www.richersounds.com/product/...460/lg-42cs460 £330 + £32.95 for 5yr Guarantee
Currys/Dixons a 3 or 5 year Care Plan is from £109 so it would cost you vastly more overall to include a warranty/guarantee than in comparison at Richer Sounds.

Overall stores such as Richer Sounds are better to shop at than the main high street chain of shops!
Thanks for that, out the two which would you recommend then? Or are there any others that you think are better, I can stretch maybe to £450 max i've noticed that the Panasonic's cost much more!!

This Panasonic looks like good value, I spoke a guy at richersounds and he said it comes without the stand, tv remote, box, manual but the TV is in perfect working order and has 12 months guarantee. Is it worth a buy?

Without spending time comparing and contrasting the two models and reading reviews on What hi-fi, Which etc ... my gut feeling at a glance is I favour the Samsung.

With regards to the Panasonic - http://www.whathifi.com/review/tx-p42g30/user-reviews (I assume this review would have been written at the time of its release) and it does look promising if you look at the 'your opinion' peoples comments are good and a recent on Apr 25 2012 - gut feeling I favour this over the two TV's you had originally picked.

If you do go for the Panasonic - don't be shy on haggling a price since there is no stand, remote, box, manual etc
perhaps sugggest a price of £350 or suggest how about £400 including 5 year warranty?
you personally maybe already happy paying £400 just for the TV but may as well go for the haggle as you never know what deal you may get after all shy people get nothing!
The Panasonic at Richersounds was sold but I've found another place selling them new for £419!

    Panasonic TX - P42G30B £419

    or

    Panasonic TC-P42UT50B £499
this one is 3D and smart
