Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?I think the fact I started wearing mine all the time made my vision slightly worse. Nowadays I could just about get by without wearing them but seeing writing from a distance I can't do. I just take mine off for being on the computer and reading as I don't need them for doing them and it becomes a bit of a hindrance wearing them.(Original post by Dmon1Unlimited)
I had an eye test last year, it was something similar to yours, 0.5/0.75?
My main purpose for the glasses is to view long distances/driving etc
I don't know if my vision is getting worse but I personally think you shouldn't keep your glasses on for long periods of time. I've been paranoid that taking off my glasses during long chains of lectures was making my vision (temporarily) worse. -
Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?My thought was it should adjust (correctly ) given that the glasses are supposed to correct vision, not make it worse. I suppose it could be all in my head or that my vision was degrading regardless of the glasses, I'll need to make an objective test, such as write out a large string of numbers, put it far away enough that I can just about recite them, wear my glasses for a couple hours, then take them off and rerecite the numbers.(Original post by benpearson1)
I can't think that's right, although I don't profess to be an expert on the matter so I could be wrong. I'm only going on what both of my opticians have told me.
I'd say it's just your eyes adjusting to the prescription, which is obviously what your eyes need (otherwise you wouldn't have that prescription.
I'd say to everyone just follow your opticians advice, but if your eyesight is -3 or below I'd think you need to wear your glasses most of the time. Why the hell would any optician in their right mind give you glasses that would make your vision worse?!
I think Im allowed to assume that my vision won't be changing in the span of a couple hours rather more long term, so if I can't recite the numbers, it may give indication towards the glasses. If I can, it may not be my glasses but possibly be in my head/vision degrading in general.
Well anyway, I'll get a checkup near the end of the monthLast edited by Dmon1Unlimited; 17-07-2012 at 21:11. -

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?
Your optician/dispenser really should have gone through when to wear them with you. You'll definitely need them for driving (I think legally) and will see benefits with things like watching TV, lectures, maybe even computer use. It's up to you whether you wear them the rest of the time, unless your astigmatism is particularly high.
I'm a +1.00 in the right and +0.75 in the left and I only wear them when I am concentrating, although myopia/hypermetropia affect the eyes differently. -
Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?Really no...(Original post by AeroLB)
Don't wear them all the time if you don't need them would be my advice - you will become forever dependent on them, and it can lead to your eyesight getting worse.
I used to work as an optical assistant, I'm not just saying this to be pedantic...Last edited by LavenderBlueSky88; 17-07-2012 at 23:10. Reason: adding content -
Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?
-0.50 is a small prescription in the grand scheme of things, but can still be useful for sharpening things up in the distance. Also your prescription depends on what your correction for astigmatism is and your spherical correction combined, which is why they are written Sph Cyl Axis, the sphere tells you your overall correction, the Cyl the correction for astigmatism and the Axis is the angle at which the two cross. All this all means is that you could have a fairly small distance prescription of -0.50 but a correction for astigmatism of -5.00 (I've seen it before in practice) which means you 100% should be wearing your prescription the whole time and indeed the world would go funny if you didn't. If your glasses are helping you to see you need to be wearing them. Not necessarily all the time, some distance prescriptions for example wont be any good for trying to read, as it's easier without your glasses on, but if you feel comfortable wearing them all the time, wear them all the time. It is a myth that wearing your glasses full time, when you have been prescribed them for full time wear can make your vision deteriorate, usually if your eyes have got worse and you've been wearing your glasses full time, its the other way round, and you're wearing your glasses all the time because they've gotten worse if you see what I mean...It's all a vicious circle. Do what feels best, and always follow the recommendations of your optician. Hope this helps
Kim
PS I would just also like to state, that unless you do have a large correction for astigmatism, it is not illegal to drive without a -0.50 correction.Last edited by kimingerose; 17-07-2012 at 21:40. Reason: addition -
Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?I'm sorry, but this is totally untrue. My great uncle Dan was an optometrist and did research that proved this was untrue. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2494903.stm This shows that giving children too low a prescription (thus like not wearing glasses) damages your eyesight.(Original post by AeroLB)

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?
I've seen how glasses wearers hate people who wear "fake" glasses so I was just wondering. Mine aren't "fake", but I didn't want any animosity for wearing low prescription glasses all the time.
I've done a lot of research into factors that affect myopia and wearing glasses full time does not affect it. Nor does reading up close all the time. However a diet high in cabs seems to affect it slightly and so does the amount of time you spend outdoors in sunlight!
So yeah, I think I'll wear them all the time

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?WOW!!! How did it improve so much?!(Original post by Alotties)
I only wear my glasses part time (which is rare haha) and my vision has improved from -3 in both eyes to -1.5 and -1.25 in each eye so I don't think it really matters if you wear them full time. I find wearing mine all the time my eyes become dependant on them which can probably cause my vision to get worse so I only wear them when vital.

WOW!!! How did it improve so much?!
I just wore my glasses only if I really needed them and avoided them otherwise

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?Cool!!! I am doing the same for about 9 years and my eyes are only getting worse...(Original post by Alotties)

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?
When I had -0.50 in one eye and +0.50 in the other eye, plus an astigmatism, I was wearing my glasses full time. I started off wearing my glasses occasionally but I soon found that when I didn't wear them all the time it put strain on my eyes and I would get headaches. If this is the case for you I would strongly recommend wearing them all the time.
I work in an opticians and have done for 3 years now. It is most definitely a myth that wearing your glasses as little as possible improves your eyesight. If you have a prescription, you should be wearing your glasses for their designated purpose, otherwise you wouldn't have been advised to get them by your optician. By not wearing the glasses when you need them, you are putting strain on your eyes which instead of causing your eyes to get better, will almost certainly cause them to get worse. Even if you only wear them occasionally when you you need to wear them, this will be helping your eyes more so than by not wearing them at all.
If at any time you feel that you should be wearing them, then do so. Wearing them improves your eyesight and causes the muscles in your eyes to relax, which lessens the likelihood of eye problems as you get older. Yes your prescription may get worse as the years go by, but this is natural in any case and not wearing your glasses will not prevent this.
You shouldn't be worried about wearing your glasses in front of other people as a) your glasses are trendy and as glasses are way more socially acceptable now, you wont look out of place with them on. Sure it will be a bit odd on the first day of you wearing them but that's in the same way as if you dyed your hair or did anything else to change your appearance.
As a side note, earlier on someone mentioned how the sun affects your eyes. For those of you who don't know; in the same way that the sun affects your skin, the sun affects your eyes too. So just like if you're pale you'll burn more easily, if you're pale and you have light coloured eyes, your eyes are going to be more susceptible to damage, especially as you get older. Everyone should have a pair of sun glasses with UV protection in them, but if you can get hold of polarized glasses, they are the best eye protection you can get against the sun! (They're like the factor 50 in glasses form!) This is applicable to anyone, even if they don't have a prescription.
PROTECT YOUR EYES! I have seen too many stingy old men and women walk through the doors of our opticians with cataracts and goodness knows what else and their vision can never be 100% even with glasses now because they didn't protect their eyes or wear their glasses when they were supposed to! Life is too short to walk around with imperfect vision if you can correct it!

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?Your eyes will get worse with glasses, I can assure you. My eyes are -3 and I don't use glasses. I have them but I don't use them except when necessary.(Original post by randomguy786)
So I had an eye test and found out I'm myopic in both eyes with a prescription of -0.50 and an astigmatism in my left eye.
My glasses arrived today and I really like them. They really clear things up, but I'm incredibly afraid to where them in public or in front of my friends!
Does anyone else with a prescription similar to mine wear them full-time as well? How did you find wearing them I front of friends/public for he first time?

Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?
My eyes doctor and I were discussing this matter about glasses.
Her opinion and experience is this: never use glasses when you don't need them.
She said eyes get lazy after using glasses for long enough. I would like you to try it out: print out a chart of letters used for eye check-up, use glasses all day and then try to compare how you can see after all day with glasses. I guarantee to you that you won't see as best as you could when you don't use glasses all the time. That's my personal experience which was agreed upon by eye doctor.
As she said, she never uses glasses except when driving or watching a play in theater. -
Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time? No. You just started noticing the problem. Many young people have small eyesight defects but the muscles in their eyes can cope by adjusting the focus. They don't notice they have the problem. As they get a little older (late teens, early twenties) the muscles become less able to do so (yes, even that young) and they therefore notice the problem through headaches caused by the constant (unconscious) straining. They therefore need spectacles. The muscles continue to deteriorate in flexibility and they think their eyesight is getting worse because of the spectacles, which is nonsense.(Original post by SirMasterKey)
I think the fact I started wearing mine all the time made my vision slightly worse. -
Re: Is prescription -0.50 low enough to wear glasses full time?Mine are +1 and +o.5 depending on the eye - sometimes I wear my glasses full time, sometimes I don't(Original post by randomguy786)
