Would giving up my unconditional offer be a bad idea?
Sorry if this thread's in the wrong place - I haven't posted before but I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts!

I recieved three unconditional offers to study Spanish, but I was unsucessful at KCL, my first choice - I met the entry requirements, but I was slightly late in sending the application (I spent a few weeks in hospital at the beginning of the year). I've firmly accepted a place at RHUL, but it will mean two hours commuting each day and I'm not willing to give up entirely on KCL as it would be super close to home...

So my question is - if places become available at KCL in Clearing (and is that even likely anyway?), would I be foolish to ask for release from RHUL in order to try again at KCL? I met the entry requirments and the admissions team know I'd be keen to try for a clearing spot if there is one, but I'm frightened to give up a place at RHUL; if things don't work out at KCL I might end up with no place at all!

Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation? Thanks everyone

KCL has been in Clearing before, but it's hard to predict whether it will be this year or not.

How desperate are you to go to university this year?

Go to King's, it's much better than the other. Also, commuting will add up and it's boring plus you can't really do anything productive on the train when you're squashed between people.

DON'T ASK RHUL TO RELEASE YOU AND THEN TRY FOR KINGS! If you are going to do it you can contact Kings and then see if they'll accept you! If they will THEN ask RHUL to release you! If Kings won't accept you you will still have your place at RHUL

I know - I'm not holding out hope, but I think I might go for it if places become available.

I really want to go back to uni this year. I don't want to put it off any longer. My little boy's just starting school so it's perfect timing

I know King's is excellent, but I didn't think RHUL was too bad...?

Yes, you're right, that's what worries me! It'll cost a fortune to commute to Egham every day and I'll waste so much valuable time! And I don't know if I can make it work logistically, taking into account my boy's school schedule as well.

You don't give up your place before clearing, only if you get the clearing place

Thanks for your help bownessie and funsongfactory

I did speak to a UCAS rep who said I'd have to give up my place before applying elsewhere... but as you say, it makes more sense to speak to KCL on the day and try to figure it out independently. I'm just so impatient to sort this out!

Yeah, I'm not going to lie, commuting is a pain in the backside! Even more so because the trains run every half an hour AND the train station is 1 mile away (exactly). So you pretty much need t leave RHUL campus like 30 mins before your train arrives to get to the station and the you have 2 hour train journey so all in all its more than the 2 hours you anticipated. Now, because you're a mum, it might be even more annoying because you'll no doubt have 101 things to do and commuting takes up way too much time because of the lax train schedule. It's even more annoying because unlike London, you can't just leave campus when you want and then have the train wait for you- you have to wait for the train. It gets annoying especially when lecturers let you out late/early and you can't make it to the station for the train or will be there too early even if you did. trust me this is my biggest pet peeve with RHUL probably because I live in the city.
