    European Studies King's college
    Hello,

I am beginning the european studies program at king's this year and don't know which option is the best to choose. Does anyone know which course is more interesting between law and politics ? I really don't know what to pick ! I have until september to choose but I really would like to have some advice from King's students who attended those courses.

    thank you very much

    Hi hmaghin,

I will also begin the BA in European Studies in September but I am also wondering which option I will choose because I think there are all very interesting. But I think for me the most useful might be european law and economics A.
    Which pathway are you taking?

    Thanks,

    Hi, thanks for replying !

I am taking the German pathway. And you ?
I agree, Economics seem the most useful option but not necessarily the most interesting one. I looked up the books for the politics course and the economics course and have come to the conclusion that the economics seem to be really basic compared to the politics course.
Actually I think you should make your choice according to what option you want to choose in the second year. For my part, I will certainly take the political economy course (which does not solve my problem for my first year choice : Economics of Politics ? what do you think ?)

If I was you I wouldn't choose law over economics because law won't enable you to understand precise European law etc. (clearly, my opinion is that you choose law as a department subject or you just don't study it. I think you will only have the basics of law, and above all, there is no law option in the fourth year).

ps : I decided in the end not to choose law because of this reason.

    Hi !

Oh great ! I'm taking the French pathway !
    Where are you from?

Yeah same for me, in the second year i might take also the political economy course so taking law wouldn't be really sensible, I think it will be quite boring because we might only read decisions of the European Court... and there is also an awful lot of boring memorizing.

You're right when telling that Economics is not the most interesting one, of course politics seem to be more interesting as a subject matter but we might be learning something regarding argument and essay writing, not only this but it might be less useful than economics. Whereas Economics A seems to be more conceivable if in the second year you wanna take the political economy course because economy is related to politics and also it's regulates our current world.

When you say you choose law as a department subject or you just don't study it; I totally agree with you. Because we'll only study concepts of european law and not how the real law process functions.
So I also might not take European law.

I agree it's a tough decision to know what option to take !

    Hi !
that's cool to know i am not the only one to be in this situation !
I am french by the way so I if you have problem with the language or literature I will be totally able to help you anytime

So in the end your opting for economics ? The great advantage of this option is that it is taught at LSE, best school of economics in England ! That's actually what attracts me. At high school I was taking economics classes but the teacher wasn't interesting.
So to have the opportunity to be taught by really good teacher in this field is very tempting. And on the other hand when I looked at the indicative reading in economy and it was fairly simple (I mean it's all the stuff I ve already learned 2 years ago, but instead of being in French it's in English ! )

Yeah that's more reassuring to know we're both in the same situation !
Moi aussi je suis française ! Where in France do you come from??

Oui je pense que je vais prendre Economics A, ce n'est pas encore définitif mais presque sur ! LSE est vraiment une des meilleures écoles en ce qui concerne l'économie. Yeah I saw the books, it seems to be simple but in English may be less simple, we'll see ! You're right, we will have the opportunity to have one of the best teachers ...

Right, we only have to make our choices in September so we can think about it !
Looking forward to king's too !

Let me know if you make a choice. See you at the freshers !
