Furthermaths at A Level?
I did Add maths during my GCSE year and i've put myself forward to do Maths & Furthermaths (along with physics and computing) for A Level, was just wondering if anyone else had chosen this too? We had some taster lessons for Furthermaths, and the teacher taking the taster lesson explained how our school bombards us with modules over the two years... I'm working at A* maths and A Add maths grades I'm still slightly worried with the amount of work that i have to look forward to (assuming i hit those grades), and i'm only doing 4 AS instead of most of my friends who do 5! Should i be worried?

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
You don't need to do 5 AS's. The only reason you should consider doing it is if you are genuinely interested in those subjects. If you are relatively good at maths (which you appear to be), then maths and further maths at AS shouldn't be too difficult. Yes there are a lot of modules but it isn't as bad when you actually start it. You probably already know most of C1 as you've done additional maths. So it shouldn't be that bad. So the workload shouldn't be too bad.

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
I found AS and A2 level maths fine, as was AS further maths. However, A2 further maths has been a whole different ball game. (I self taught GCSE and A level maths and got A*s, I have'nt got my further maths result yet, but the last module I did I got a B) I doubt you'll have too much trouble with your choices, though you may want to reconsider further maths at A2 if you find it hard at AS. As far as the number of subjects you've taken, if you tend to understand things first time round for maths, further maths and physics I doubt you'll have too much work. I used to be able to complete both the work and the homework for all my lessons in school time. Obviously it's a different story at exam time. I would imagine computing has a large coursework elements, so that will probably take a good chunk of time. Either 4 or 5 AS levels is totally normal - you could always pick a fifth and drop it if you decide you aren't keen - at least that way you'd have another option if you decided one of those A levels wasn't for you! Good luck!

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?First of all, I took maths, physics and business for AS. I'll be doing the same to A2, but also AS Further maths, and maybe A2 if I can squeeze it in a year. I want to do computer science at university.(Original post by OllieGCSEs)

OK, maths is super easy, if what you're doing is 3 modules in the first year and 3 in the second. If it's like that, then just do the homework during the year, and before exams obviously do more revision. The key thing for maths is to do as many past papers as possible, for the first few exams you have no excuse not to do all of them, over 20 by now.
If Further maths is the same, 3 in year 12 and 3 in the following, then you should be OK, so long as you have a teacher. I am going to hopefully be doing twice as much work as you in one year, on my own... All independent. Obviously I can ask for help, but I'm teaching it to myself.
Physics is just a normal A level; work hard and you should be rewarded. I don't know about computing, but it should be fun...?
Finally, I don't know what additional maths is. Hope this helps and I'll be very glad to talk more

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?C1 and C2 will have a lot of stuff you have already done. Plus considering people who didn't do the FSMQ do fine with Further Maths, you should be fine. As has been said before past papers are the best way to prepare for Maths exams.(Original post by OllieGCSEs)

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
If you genuinely enjoy the subject, as opposed to just being good at it, then do it. You'll most likely enjoy it!
Don't worry about doing 5 AS's either. Universities don't really care for them, and you can focus on getting the best grades possible in the 4 subjects that you do have. Think about it like this: AAAB at AS is better than AABBB.Last edited by rachaelizabeth; 17-07-2012 at 21:59. -
Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
Thanks E13 and brittanna, reading your advice and comments were a great help and a great confidence boost

MrBlueMo0n:
I'd like to do electronic/electrical engineering at university(Original post by MrBlueMo0n)
What do you want to do at university?
I was informed that maths furthermaths and physics would be most relevant, and computing or chemistry should be considered to broaden engineering availabilities (along with the mechanics modules in FMaths)
Yes, we'll be doing around 3 modules for Maths and 3 for Furthermaths each year (some weird combination like C1 C2 M1 FP1 FP2 and S2 or something for the first year, then the other core modules and other applied ones in year 13). Sounds fun, eh? I bet it's even more fun to be doing it yourself!(Original post by MrBlueMo0n)

Hopefully the maths will come in handy with physics, and yeah computing should be fun(Original post by MrBlueMo0n)

lots of programming, bit of theory (to be honest i prefer theory sometimes, it's more interesting)
It was very helpful, and for your information, Additional maths is a 'Free-Standing Maths Qualification' designed to bridge between GCSE and A level maths, it mainly covers C1 as brittanna mentioned(Original post by MrBlueMo0n)
Finally, I don't know what additional maths is. Hope this helps and I'll be very glad to talk more

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?I really hope your school don't make you do FP2 in year 12. I'd double check if that's true because FP2 has C3 and C4 content. It was probably twice as hard as any other A level module I did. Engineering will be fun, you could always take chemistry as well if you felt like it!(Original post by OllieGCSEs)

Re: Furthermaths at A Level? Now that you mention it i think FP2 is being left till year 13.. but i can't quite remember(Original post by E13)

although i do recognise the whole C3&4 being related to FP2... did you do an engineering degree? Or are you still at A levels? Or neither

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?Lol too much quoting. What will happen, is that you will separate Further from normal maths. Normal will be C1, C2 and M1 in year 12, then C3, C4 and M2 in year 13. Further maths could be anything, but it will start with FP1 (which doesn't require previous knowledge, I don't think) and then likely two other modules, like S1. You wont do S2 before S2. The second year will have FP2 or 3, it doesn't matter which because they are not in order. What you should know is that FP2 or 3 rely on knowledge from C3 and C4, so I'm still wondering about that myself, as I have to convince teachers to even let me do Further maths A2.(Original post by OllieGCSEs)
MrBlueMo0n:
One other thing, and this could be reading to far into it, but doing chemistry sounds like a good idea for electrical engineering. So it may b a good reason to take it, especially if you enjoy it. However, if you fail chemistry because you focus on other subjects (maths is outright most important) then universities may see that you're not that good at sciency stuff, as I personally link chemistry into electrical engineering.
And I also find it funny that there's a bridge between GCSE and AS, because AS maths was really easy, I mean you have enough time to take it all in! A bridge to A2 might be more helpful... -
Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
Mate i keened those quotes..

Anyway, yes, i spent months debating between chemistry and computing, but i can't do both
Our school's choice columns are ****ing stupid, and to put it simply, i can only choose two subjects from physics chemistry and computing. I immediately chose physics as one of them, as it's essential for nearly all engineering degrees, and then i tasted both chemistry and computing. I chose to keep computing as my choice, but i could swap it on results day if i want to, however i can't do both

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?I've got an offer for Natural Sciences at Cambridge, but I don't need further maths to meet my offer(Original post by OllieGCSEs)

Engineering was never totally my thing, but I've got loads of friends who love it, I guess it's just the more broadly you can start your degree, the more likely you are to end up doing EXACTLY what you want to be doing.
Edit: your school's columns do sound stupid, at ours you just wrote down the subjects you wanted to take and timetables from there. And everyone got all the subjects they wanted to take

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?they're incredibly stupid... even though i chose Fmaths as an option, i'm actually forced to do it because i don't want to do anything else in column two :/ but it's ok because i think it'll be great(Original post by E13)
Congratz on an offer from cambridge! what are your conditions and what A levels did you do?
-
Re: Furthermaths at A Level? Thanks! I did maths, further maths, biology, chemistry and physics (and general studies, but that doesn't count). My offer was A*AA in maths, chemistry and physics in any order. I've got the A* in maths, so I need 24% in physics and 30% in chemistry to get my As. The joys of a modular system. Obviously this means I will be mighty pissed off with myself if I've missed my offer. Are you thinking about cambridge?(Original post by OllieGCSEs)

Re: Furthermaths at A Level? Are the choice columns due to timetable restrictions? If not, fight for it. Just bear in mind that "we can't because the choice columns say so" is an illogical argument and you'll be fine.(Original post by OllieGCSEs)

, I feel oxbridge is out of my reach, but if i do extremely well in mz GCSE and AS exams then who knows?

Re: Furthermaths at A Level?Yes that is one acceptable AS Further Maths combination. FP1 is not too hard from what I have heard.(Original post by gooner4ever)
How hard is FP1? Im considering doing A level maths with AS further maths at the moment I got a really high a * at gcse although I did work for it!
Also Is AS further maths FP1 plus two additional modules like M1 or S1?
