Is it really worth the EXTRA effort to do AS Further Maths then?

Do you have any ideas for what you want to apply for at university and at which universities?

Then I would say that Further Maths AS would be helpful and worthwhile.

Hi I am in a similar position, I did my gcse a year early, finished Maths in year 10 with 4ums off a* but did OCR FSMQ this year and did a linear maths exam where this time i got a* and found it alright got an A in mock so should get A/B in that.

Saying that I do I was planning on doing biology chemistry history and Maths alevels with AS Fmaths. Want to be a doctor.

The reasons for this me is I like Maths and am alright at it, but biggest bonus is that get to ensure A grads in alevel Maths as can pick best modules from the alevel and half to go towards the alevel in Maths.

Question is, is this too much work doing 5 alevel or is doing it ok as it just extension of Maths? How have people found doing 4.5alevels with as further Maths?

I don't understand, do you already have an A2 in maths? Because you said you were 4 ums off an A*, which you can only get at A2. If so, just resit one exam (worst) and get an A*:nodots:

Why history? I don't really see the connection to being a doctor. I'd do Further A2, but Further AS is great, not hard and well worth the little extra effort. I'm going to be doing Further maths A2 in one year, all on my own:nodots:!

Also, I'd imagine History has way more homework than the likes of maths, because maths is just a couple of questions a week usually. So the workload of doing just sciences and maths is much lower than doing stuff like English etc. Plus, they are better, in my opinion, so it's just a no brainer for me.

AS+A2 maths and AS f. maths is a joke, you'll be laughing. A2 f. maths is where it toughens up.

Sorry I wasn't clear that was gcse. I m about to go to sixth form in sept.

History, well I enjoy it and I alright and it. Also some medical school like a contrasting subject as it shows that your not just a scientific person.

So you think the work load with my preferences will be manageable.

    Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
As someone previously said, AS and A2 Maths and AS Further Maths are laughable. A2 Further Maths is magnitudes more challenging and you have to put in a lot of effort to get a remotely decent grade. However this problem can be reduced if you are wise in which modules you take! For example, for single maths my modules are C1-4 and S1-2 and for further maths I did FP1-2 D1-2 and M1-2 (I did FP3 as well for my own curiosity but I didn't do well in it and they take your best module marks, so it's useless). D1 and D2 are boring but easy, and offset the difficulty of FP2.

Basically hit the ground running, the better you do in the initial modules the more leeway you have for the harder ones (This applies to all subjects!). If you have to retake I'd advise not retaking it for the next exam season because if you give it a year it will become so much easier and hence you are more likely to improve (Though with Michael Gove and his rule of tyranny benevolence that soon might not be an option )

TL;DR how to get A's in Maths are Further Maths:
    - Do D1 and D2
    - Leave retakes until later on, unless you need A's at AS for your Uni application.
    - If you're more concerned with your grade rather than interest for Maths, then I'd recommend not going beyond M2/S2/FP2.

Maths is so easy, I'm seriously not joking. Whatever anyone says, bs. They say maths is the hardest A level, it's really not. I genuinely think it's the easiest, so long as you do homework. But that's easy!

A lot of people seem to have the idea of doing 5 these days, so 4.5 should be good. But why history?

Thanks for the advice. Sorry I did answer all your qs but accidentally just edited into your reply so if you look at the quote it explains.

-History is something I enjoy am I alright at
    - shows I m more than just scientific
    - some unis like contrasting subject

    Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
Many people seem to be saying that A2 Further Maths is very hard. I did AQA Further Maths, and A2 Further was obviously harder than A2 Maths but it still wasn't THAT hard. It was still a more or less similar level of problem solving to A2 Maths. For what it's worth, the difficulty hierarchy is FP4>FP2>FP3 and you can avoid FP4 if you want to. FP4 is fairly tough.

    Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
I'm hopefully going to study maths in the forthcoming months at Warwick or Bath and I have to honestly say that I found further maths decently challenging throughout the whole of the two years that I studied it. I'm not saying I found it too difficult, or too easy for that matter - but it certainly stretched me somewhat.

Perhaps circumstances for me were different than others; for one there wasn't much teaching time allocated to each module at all, especially at A2 level (where further maths becomes much more difficult). Nonetheless, as our class was basically a trio of maths applicants we worked together as well as with teachers in order to get through each module.

I suppose my point is that it's quite easy for people to say that further maths, or even maths A level is straight forward. However, you always stumble across something difficult in both A levels - it's all about whether you can tackle the problems thoughtfully or not, which coincidentally came to be the deciding factor for success in the FP2 module I took recently this summer.

    Re: Furthermaths at A Level?
You stumble across difficult things in most courses I think; I wouldn't say it's necessarily the sole indicator of difficulty. In my opinion there's a difference between a difficulty grasping things and genuinely being 'stretched'.

I think it helps quite a bit that you seem to be doing most of the easier modules first, because the Further Maths A2 modules definitely lead on from the A2 Maths in difficulty and content even if they're supposedly suitable for being taught side by side. I took C1, C2, S1, and M1 in June of the lower sixth; C3, C4, and FP1 in January of Upper Sixth, and FP2, FP3, FP4, S2, M2 in June of upper sixth. If I had done FP2, FP3 and FP4 side-by-side with C3 and C4 I can imagine it would have been somewhat harder.

I found that the skills I learnt in doing FP1, M1 and M2 for AS Further Maths this year were far better than those I learnt in C1, C2 and S1. Not in terms of topics covered (although the former modules are more interesting), but in algebraic manipulation and such like which is making A2 studies far easier. I would say do it.

Depends how big the school is and how strong the team of teachers is.
