"Pride and Prejudice among classic novels to receive erotic makeover"
    http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...r-7946364.html

I can't get over how angry this concept makes me. These classics are beautiful and brilliant, why butcher them? By all means, write new books, write ones that are vaguely similar, but don't rewrite Pride and Prejudice and destroy it. The whole charm of these books is that there's passion in them without the main characters "getting it on" every five seconds. I know I don't have to read them so I suppose it shouldn't affect me, but I mean, it's completely unnecessary. These books are fantastic as they are, they don't need this.

    Thoughts?

I agree, they're classics therefore they should be left as they are. I doubt Austen or the Bronte sisters would be impressed that nearly 200 years later, their books are being 'erotically' revived.

You know you can still purchase the unadulterated originals, right?

Why does it have to be classics? There's plenty of erotic fiction around without needing to add to old novels. I find it difficult to imagine that the scenes will actually have any coherence within the story. Also, I wonder how much of a market there will be for erotic classics - the two generally have different sorts of readership.

It's a pretty cynical attempt to make money by cashing in on the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' women's porn market, imo.

that said I don't see the point of these books as much of this sort of material is already available for free on sites like fanfiction.net and literotica :teehee:

I already have the unadulterated originals. But the fact that someone wants to tamper with them like this really upsets me. I mean, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was one thing, that was pretty funny. But there's a difference between that and soft porn.

What no. You cannot do that to such a classic book. They are amazing books as they are and should not be changed like this. Seriously come up with your own stories if you want to make them erotic, leave the classics alone. It would completely change them. What would Jane Austen think?

Again, I feel the need to emphasise: the original books are not being changed. If you got on amazon and buy a copy of Pride and Prejudice next week, it will not have erotic content.

I understand that but I just do not think that it is right to mess with a story like that. Some things are protected like foods (ok this is slightly going off the point now) and sometimes I think that classics should be protected so that people can not make erotic versions of them. Leave it to people's imaginations.

Who cares? Books have had alternative versions written for years - it never causes an issue because nobody is forcing you to buy the altered version. If you love the original... read the original? Nobody forces you to watch shoddy tv versions of books either.

Seems like the only reason anybody would object to this is if they're just a prude. Pride and predjudice doesn't belong to you love.

No, I'm just complaining about the fact that people do this. The fact that these versions will be out in the big wide world is like...Nicki Minaj trying to work Beethoven's music into one of her songs.

Doesn't belong to whoever wants to change it, either.

Pop and hip-hop artists add beats to classical music all the time.

Probably does. There's no difference between this or the other thousands of versions and adaptations of books in the past. Except this involves sex and is so immediately INAPPROPRIATE AND IS BUTCHERING A CLASSIC! Also gives people an opportunity to pretend they're just soooo into classical literature that they can't bear to see their beloved books made into a different version.

    Deal with it.

And when they do, nine times out of ten it just doesn't sound as good.

How can a book truly belong to anyone except the author?

An obvious 50 Shades fanatic over here...

I'm sure anyone who loves literature especially the classics would agree with the OP. It's not about being a prude, it's about having taste.

Protected foods? You can't 'protect' novels or stop others from rewriting them. As ****ty as this idea sounds and as much as I roll my eyes at undersexed women living vicariously through their reading theres no good reason to stop people publishing what they want.

It belongs to no one, the point is that these books being written won't take away from your enjoyment of the original and if some people want to read erotic versions how does that harm anyone? A bad cover version of a song doesn't ruin the original so why not just let it be.
