Semi Final #1: Voting now closed.
    Voting now closed.

For over a month TSR members submitted their student app' ideas in our biggest competition EVER, and now it's time for you guys to vote for your favourite!
Remember, your vote counts as it could determine who win's a FREE degree with the Open University

The first app' ideas are below. Have a read and vote for which ones you like the best (you can select more than one) :gthumb:

Voting closes for this semi final at 1pm tomorrow (Thursday), when the next semi final will be put up to vote. The winners from both semi finals will be put to a head to head vote on Friday, to run until the end of the weekend.

Thanks guys and good luck to all the entries :teeth:

Check out each of the app' ideas and vote!

    Your Career
Description: I would love to see an app that would be able to present you with a series of questions. These questions will help determine what type of person you are and what career, perhaps suits your skill set best. Then, after finding that out, you'll be given an opportunity to find out what courses you'll need to do to get into that career.

How it will aid student life: It'll aid more than a students life - a prospective students life. It'll help them find what they could potentially be really good at. It'll then show them how they can get into that career. It'll do wonders for everyone, and in my opinion, further widen access to the further and higher education.

    Brain of Britain
Description: My idea is for an app that would exercise students brain cells and imagination prior to taking an exam or studying. It would be a series of short, fun games and tips.

How it will aid student life: It would reduce anxiety and aid concentration

    Recapp
Description: My app would be based on the Distributed Learning method which is a revision strategy that is centered around preventing studied material being forgotten after it is learned initially. This method works by slowing down the rapid rate of forgetting that occurs in the 48 hour period after a piece of information is introduced.
The app would get the user to breakdown the information they need to learn (such as a module) into manageable chunks. This information would then be converted into a schedule using calendar alerts that would be spread over intervals in order to remind people what information they would need to learn at what time in order to minimize the amount forgotten and maximize the amount of information retained. Overall this method is more effective than the cram method as it helps to learn small pieces thoroughly over a long period rather than trying to learn massive amounts quickly.

How it will aid student life: This app would aid student life in several ways:
-It would reduce exam stress as revision would not have to be as intense or inefficient.
-Information would be learned more thoroughly instead of it being only partly memorized, ergo better marks! (Every students goal!).
and much more! (damn word cap!)

    CollaborApp
Description: CollaborApp is a mobile application designed for students to use when looking for collaborators and/or projects requesting collaboration. Students are able to register, search for and create collaborative opportunities for other students to see and apply for and basically acts as a platform for communication between students looking for specific skill sets and people to help work on a particular task, project and/or venture.

How it will aid student life: CollaborApp enables students to share real collaborative opportunities with other students whilst also providing students with a place to look for real work opportunities (Paid, if the opportunity includes this benefit).

    My Degree Stats
Description: "At the beginning of an academic year, the student/user inputs how much the year is worth overall to their degree, percentage-wise.

When an assignment for a module has been marked, they input their result in percentage-form, along with how much said assignment was worth within the module, and how much the module was worth within the year (they are given the option to input this in terms of credits, in case they're rubbish at maths!).

The app, taking into account any previous marks submitted by the user, calculates the marks they need to achieve or average in future assignments/years to achieve each classification for a) the module, b) the academic year, and c) the course in its entirety."

How it will aid student life: I always spent AGES trying to figure out what marks meant in terms of how I needed to do in other assignments, and whether or not I was on track for my target grade. I would have loved to have had an app to figure it out for me!

Re: VOTE for your favorite app' idea in the OU comeptition
I think Career would probably be the most useful tbh. I mean the only other one i'd use is Degree Stats but when you have Moodle or Blackboard or Portico or whatever, you can simply look up your stats and in much more detail, whereas people are much more clueless about Careers and even though you can look them up on various websites, to have a single app which brings together all the information a current-student prospective-employee would need, would imo, be much more useful.

They're all good! But based on the one I would've found useful, then I vote Recapp.

Recapp looks to be the best thought out, and at the end of the day every student wants better grades and if that helps I'm all for it.

The only one that is original is the last one Collaborapp its the most simplistic one too. Brain of Britain and The careers option one are not targeted enough to the general user and are therefore gimmicks which can already be taken on loads of online websites. Recap is a nice idea but would be extremely difficult to input the exact details needed for that persons exam success. Lastly, the degree states one is rather basic.
I really hope my app is one the semi final list tommorow so everyone gets to critique my own idea!

Recapp and My degree stats would have both been very useful tools for me when I was at uni!

There were my two favourites even if Recapp seems like it will be incredibly complex to actually make.

I quite like My Degree Stats actually. Can also be applied to A levels (which also makes it easier for students to see if they will be able to make the grades for their uni choices).
Also like Collaborapp but i'm not sure if it's meant to be a way for students working on a group project to communicate or a way for students to nationally if they need like say a writing buddy etc :/ ?

Interestingly, my app is similar in someway to Collaborapp in terms of connecting people through a social network but mine has a completely different twist to it!!!

Recapp looks like the most useful but quite difficult to make. It looks like it could help more that university students with exams.

Seriously? If you want to know your classification use a calculator or a spreadsheet, you don't need an app. I think actually getting a better grade is more important than knowing your grade
