I noticed there is no Swimming Society here on TSR. So I decided to make one. Although I saw an old thread from 2008.... I decided to kick things off again by making a fresh thread. If this thread generates enough interest , I will approach a mod and create a proper group for us swimmers (or if one exists , revive it!"
So Hi Swimmers!!
Let's talk swimming .....or water....or anything, doesn't have to be swimming

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
I'm interested! Might keep me motivated.
I try to go swimming at least once a week - it's the only exercise I do though really, haha. There are only 3 sessions a week at my local pool that I can get to, and all only an hour long, so I'm quite limited. I did 70 lengths the other day (25m pool) which I was really proud of, so working up from that now. I'm terrible at actually getting there on time though so usually I only get 50 minutes in the pool rather than 60, heh.
Probably more relevant to girls, but does anyone have any recommendations for good products for preventing/minimising hair damage? Unfortunately I'm allergic to most shampoos but most conditioners, leave-in stuff and sprays are fine. I do wear a swimming cap but it still gets fairly wet and it makes my hair quite dry and a bit frizzy.
And I was just thinking of excuses not to go tonight...I feel like I have to go now, haha. -
Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
I am hoping to start swimming regularly soon. It's something I enjoyed as a child, but then as I got fatter and fatter I went less and less, mostly due to the fear that if I jumped in, half the water would come out.
But now it's such a good form of exercise that I can't afford to ignore it any longer, so I plan to swim at least once a week at the beginning, hopefully increasing it to more when I get used to it. I'll probably be doing pathetic amount like one length before I get out of breath at the beginning, but fingers crossed I can build that up relatively quickly. -
Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
I was procrastinating on tsr instead of finding my swimming stuff as I'm meant to be going soon and then a new swimming society pops up. I really should go get my bag..
anyway I rather enjoy swimming but I'm not very good so I'm unsure whether I really qualify for this society. a poster above is talking about building up from 70 25m lengths and I usually average around 20 -
Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!Doesn't matter how many you average, if you enjoy swimming, I reckon you qualify lol. Everyone is different(Original post by boba)

I've just come back from swimming, and this is making me want to go again! Ha.

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
Yay! Swimming
. Swimming is by far my favourite sport/leisure activity. I try to go at least three times a week to keep in good shape. Anyone else ever find that occasionally when you're swimming lengths, there is somebody beside you trying to race or overtake you? It's often fun, but mostly annoying.

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
Course you qualify

I'd like to join too, I swim 3x a week, usually in the mornings before work (lucky enough to have a pool that opens at 6:30
) Usually go for an hour and a half, average about 2.5/3k in a good session, much less in a bad one (just get out and sit in the jacuzzi lol)
but yeah, yay swimming.Last edited by Serentonin; 18-07-2012 at 18:44. -
Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
Haha yes, there is alllllways someone that seems to swim just so they can overtake people. It often drives me nuts. And as for getting out and sitting in the jacuzzi...there is honestly nothing better than swimming for an hour and then lazing about in the steam room/jacuzzi. When I'm struggling with my last few lengths, that's usually my motivation to keep on going

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
I'll join
. I used to swim quite regularly as a kid and did a few galas and the like before giving it up for football. Now I've recently taken up triathlon, so I'm back in the pool and rediscovered how much I enjoyed it! Currently going about two-three times a week.

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
well I'm very glad to here that I apparently qualify
. I did finally pack my bag and go which was good. did 22 lengths. joining the gym tomorrow on a summer deal (home from uni) so after that I will be able to swim there without any children around which will make me a lot happier. Although I will still be going to the council pool about once a week I think with my friend.

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!

Been going swimming for the past 6 weeks about 4 -5 times a week but average on only 30 minutes in the pool. I might have to invest in some goggles as my eyes begin to sting around the 30 minute mark and i seem to get a little cramp in my toes. Strange.
But yeah, really enjoying it and will be awesome when it gets hotter! -
Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!I get cramp in my toes/foot fairly often too, it's horrible!(Original post by sparkysarmy)

And I admit to 'racing' people, it helps me push a bit further sometimes - but only if they're in the next lane, I very rarely overtake people who are in my lane, I find that really annoying. If I get too close to someone I just wait until I get to the end and wait a bit and have a drink or whatever until there's a nice gap.
I go swimming at a local school (open in the evenings twice a week for adult lane swimming) so definitely no jacuzzi or anything for me unfortunately...but it's relatively cheap and the parking/lockers/hairdryers are free. -
Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
I used to take my swimming pretty seriously and was part of a club for 7 years. Used to compete once a month or so and train twice a week, I absolutely loved it... moreso the whole club/team atmosphere rather than the hard hours put in swimming up and down the pool. Reverse pyramids were the bane of my life, I'd come home absolutely shattered.

Since I joined Uni I haven't swam, so that means I haven't been in the pool since 2010 and have forgotten what my PB's were as well. I don't see myself getting back into swimming as I doubt I'll ever recapture my old times plus I'll miss the team atmosphere. I'm taking up new sports like running and cycling but I just thought I'd post so I could reminisce about my former swimming prowess.

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
Yaaaaay, totally joining this
, I swim 5 hours a week, 4 - 6 km per session (3 x 1.5 hour sessions a week and half an hour constant swim) making up to 20km per week (800 lengths), all as part of a club, furthest I've gone in one go is 9150m (366 lengths) and could have gone further but the charity event finished. Fastest 8 lengths (200m) time is 2'17". That's just a few stats, hello everyone

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!Have a look for some adult lessons at your local pools - lots of pools do adult beginner lessons so you definitely won't be the only one there. It'll probably be helpful with making sure you're doing each stroke effectively and hopefully give you a good base to work up from(Original post by unique193)
I just started teaching myself how to swim today :P i really want to build up and be really good at it.. tips anyone?
Good luck!

Re: The New TSR Swimming Society!!!
If anyone's interested you can print out 2 vouchers for free swims at your council pool here.
They're technically for "family swims" but my pool accepted them for just me

I've just come back from swimming, and this is making me want to go again! Ha.
