Can't sleep in the dark!
I've never been able to sleep in the dark, even as a young kid. I have to sleep with my main bedroom light on, plus a lamp and have the curtains open. I can fall asleep fine in the dark and it doesn't cause me any stress or anxiety. But I wake up 10 minutes later with the lights on again (because I've turned them on in my sleep) or shouting because I don't know where I am (again, I'm not afraid of the dark so I don't know why I do that.
Anyway I'm going inter railing shortly and I've just realised this may be a problem sleeping in dorms in hostels, or rooms with my friends - who are all normal and sleep in the dark... I'm 22 on Monday and it's a bit embarrassing, if nothing else.
Any suggestions for getting over it? I can sometimes just sleep with a lamp on and the curtains open, but that's not really any good either... -

Re: Can't sleep in the dark!
I have a similar problem to you actually! I don't wake up and switch the lights on, but I get really anxious in the dark. Not scared, I just get really panicky cause I can't see. I have a set of blue lights which I keep over my blinds and have them on while I sleep, they're not in your face but they light the room just enough. Kinda looks like something outta paranormal activity though lol. They're easy to plug in and have lasted my years, so you can take them to your dorm. Maybe not hostels though lol. Unscrewing your light bulbs could work too!

Re: Can't sleep in the dark! And? what's a really good idea to unscrew the lightbulb? Could you sleep in dark without light?(Original post by littlechinagirl)

Re: Can't sleep in the dark!
Oh wow I am the complete opposite to you. I need complete darkness to sleep (think blackout blinds combined with thick curtains) and hate any light from digital clock screens/ my phone etc.
For your holiday- get a portable plug-in nightlight (there are very small ones which just fit in the socket)? Might look a bit odd in a big hostel room shared with strangers, but if it's just you and your mates then you could use it as I'm sure they won't care, and it's better than turning the main light on. -
Re: Can't sleep in the dark!I turned my TV on instead, but that is a big step as I have a tiny TV so there wasn't much light at all. Just unplug my TV next until I get out of the habit. Feeling promising. Can't believe I didn't think of it before!(Original post by Kallisto)

Re: Can't sleep in the dark!
I used to have main light, second light.
Then I got some fairy lights.
Now I have secondary light, fairy lights. (weaned myself off the main light basically)
Sometimes I can manage to sleep with just the fairy lights.
Make sure the lights have a super high electricity safety rating thing and are suitable for use for long periods of time or you're causing a fire hazard :P -
Re: Can't sleep in the dark!Good luck by your another trials to given up your habit. I'm sure it will work out one day.(Original post by littlechinagirl)
