What shall I change my A levels too?
Hi,
I am doing A levels next year in English Language, English Literature, Government & Politics and Graphics, however after going to my college's taster day I realised that Government & Politics is ****ing boring and not that well looked upon. I want to change it to another humanity subject but what one? I want to study American Studies and English at university so ideally need a humanity subject. Problem is I am rubbish at History and RE is too boring! I am considering archaeology but then my A levels are one strong (E Lit), one semi-strong (E Lang) and two weak (Archaeology and Graphics)... Also: in my interview for college I went on about how I loved politics, etc. but now I am changing it... I already have changed my mind twice. I need advice! -
Re: What shall I change my A levels too?
I'd definitely recommend history, why are you 'rubbish' at it? If you're a predominantly arts based student I shouldn't think it would be too difficult.
I'd say if you were competent in English Lang + Lit and were doing G&P you'd be fine doing History.
I'm going to do Politics and I think it looks great. -

I am barely going to scrape a C in GCSE Hist so...

I don't think you need all humanitarian type subjects to study a humanities course at university. Having a maths or science type subject could show your analytical, logical skills etc. Might be nice to consider having a broader subject range to make your university application stand out from others'.

Plus, I definitely would NEVER recommend you choose a subject you dislike just so you can study a particular course at university! I did that with chemistry and dropped it because I hated it and wasn't getting the grades I knew I could achieve in other subjects.
So if I were you I'd choose maths, a science or a language!

How are you at English etc then?
With all due respect, I think that the skills needed for both English and History aren't too dissimilar.
D in every history test - but A* in c/w -
Re: What shall I change my A levels too?
If you don't enjoy government & politics fine, but actually it's looked upon pretty much as favourably as subjects like history and English Literature. Also I'll be honest with you, English Language is categorically not a 'semi-strong' subject, it is most definitely considered a soft subject, and certainly taken in conjunction with English Literature it will be considered very weak. And tbh graphics is a very weak subject and entirely irrelevant to the degree course which you want to do.

Re: What shall I change my A levels too?I can write a lot about the link between Graphics and E Lit in my PS though! I am not writing it on here - it's too original and outlandish(Original post by funsongfactory)

How about law?
It seems quite interesting - it's something I do wish to go into possibly after my degree etc

Re: What shall I change my A levels too?
I did G&P along with history, spanish, and economics and always thought G&P was actually pretty well looked at because of the essay skills needed in the exams and I managed to get into some pretty damn good law schools with those A Levels. Again though, also depends what you want to do at university and if you find it boring then I don't really recommend it, it's one of those subjects you have to take an active interest in to be good at. If I were you, I'd drop graphics instead, which in my opinion isn't looked upon well, particularly in the more prestigious universities. Good luck!

Re: What shall I change my A levels too?
Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldnt American studies at uni have some sort of history invovled? And seems as you said your rubbish....?
Why dont you consider doing a language? I found once i started learning a language (french) I gained a better understanding of English, plus it would strengthen your application for uni.
Why not take English language, English literature, Maths and French? These for would be great four an English degreeLast edited by Oaktree; 19-07-2012 at 01:19.
